The excuse seems to be that these people all have specialized skills. Which makes it sound like no one of Indian/Middle Eastern descent work in the film industry.

But say they couldn't find anyone or it was just too expensive for some reason. Why do brown face? Just leave some with lighter skin tone (with dark haired wigs if necessary) in the background. Why are they going for brown face? That is so ****ing dumb.

There are certainly non-white British actors around around available to play middle eastern roles.

Fady Elsayed from critically acclaimed film 2012 British indie film My Bother The Devil, Penny Dreadful, World War Z, Brotherhood BBC Doctor Who Spin Off The Class is British Egyptian and available for roles.

Actress Amber Rose Revah (who plays Homeland Security agent Dinah Madani on Netflix/Marvel's The Punisher) is British as well. She was in the Saddam Hussein BBC mini series a few years ago.

It's still gonna be a while. I'm guessing they'll take a similar marketing approach as Beauty and the Beast with this one. We didn't get the first image of Emma Watson as Belle until 5-6 months before Beauty and the Beast came out. They did drop a teaser about 10 months before release but it didn't really show much in terms of characters. Maybe we'll get a teaser for Aladdin with Solo, Incredibles II or Ant-Man and the Wasp but if we do it won't show much.

I love Iago and he's a fun character, but he's not essential. The only thing he does to propel the plot forward is stealing the lamp for Jafar, and that can be done by another character. They turned him into a human in the Broadway version and it didn't make much difference to the story. His absence would be disappointing, but not enough for me to boycott it.
