Phew. It's been an emotional 20 hours. I don't feel able to go into a full review until I see the film again, as it felt like such a blur. Every now and then something will pop into my head, I'll really
feel it, and my response is that I need to see the film again. It was, as many have said though, a truly wonderful finish. It just devours through the remainder of the book, and doesn't really give much time to breath. I loved some of the changes implemented, and as always, I thought some omissions probably could have translated well on screen and deserved to be there (there was certainly enough time too), but that's really irrelevant - the movie is what it is, and it's damn good. I don't know if I've ever sat through a film where I've experienced so many sporadic tear-ups. I did my best to mostly constrain it all, but when I got home...man...
To be brief, I thought every character had at least one moment to shine, the Harry/Voldemort connection scenes were beautifully framed and told so much without saying anything, [BLACKOUT]Snape's death was handled well (I honestly didn't expect the "You have your mother's eyes..." line - wow!), and the Prince's Tale was fantastic. As mentioned, the inclusion of Hooper's HBP cue was a great choice, and the shot of Snape clutching Lily with baby Harry in the background was stunning.[/BLACKOUT] And I actually loved the epilogue. If anything, I wish it were a tad longer. I thought Dan played the part very well, and the final shot would have only been that much better with a "The End" title card on the black screen. That would have killed me.
If I were to make one gripe, which will not change with subsequent viewings, it's that I was severely disappointed that they didn't do anything special with the end credits. I know it seems like a nitpick, but this ending has been ten years in the making; I was really hoping we'd see something special, but perhaps I was just setting myself up for disappointment. It obviously has no bearing on the film itself, but I think it was a missed opportunity to keep the tears flowing.
Anyhow, it's nice to see that mostly everyone else has enjoyed it, and I can't wait to see it again and let it really sink in. Way too much to absorb in one viewing. Hopefully by the time I see it again, the numbness will have worn off...only to return again.
