Superman Returns Has the 3rd act 'grown' on you?

It's a pretty standard thing in movies, something happens to someone that should kill them, but through sheer will they manage to do the impossible. That's what I saw in SR. Absorbing the suns rays helped, too.

Well yeah thats pretty obvious, i just wish they would have left it out of SR.

No doubt about it, a hero overcoming their weaknesses by sheer will and determination has been around since Greek amphitheater's. Herculean Effort. I just thought that throwing NK laced with Kryptonite was enough, I didn't think their needed to be an exclamation point.

Exactly, there was no need for more, its really the only part of the movie i would have liked to be cut, just that little 5 second segment.

unless....they're saving that piece of Kryptonite for later......it's Kryptonite.......with presumably Superman's blood / DNA on it.............bizarro maybe??

oh.....sorry flawless.....i didn't see your post.

that's just something i thought of recently........lol.

i was thinking that perhaps Lex would get a hold of it later on and try to clone Superman......thus creating Bizarro.....or.....OR......OR.......NUCLEAR MAN!!!!

Nuclear Man: "Superman! Take your son to Disney World NOW!!!! OR I WILL HURT PEOPLE!!!"

Superman: ( Stands around.......does nothing )

Nuclear Man: "AARRGGHHH!! See, I'm hurting people!!!! AAARRRGGHHH!"

Superman: ( Still does nothing.........)

Nuclear Man: "GRRRRR!!! I'm hurting EVEN MORE PEOPLE!!! RRROOOOAAARRR!!"

Superman: "OK! STOP!!! I'l take Jason to freakin Disney World....for crying out loud!!!!! GEEEZZZ!!"

Nuclear Man: "Kayz!!!! Can I come too?"

Superman: "**** Clone!!"

hey....at least Nuclear Man was honest and straightforward in his intentions........

yah...it's a shame too.......cuz on the Donner Cut.....Donner and his friend mentioned that they were thinking of ideas for Supes 3 and 4. one can only wonder how differently 3 and 4 would have turned out if they had been given that chance.....

if ya think about.......3 was essentially about Super-Computers gone bad........well, that could have been BRAINIAC!

and 4's Nuclear Man was essentially a clone of Superman.........that could have been BIZARRO!!!

I would have loved to have seen Donner have the chance to stay on as long as he wanted for the Superman movies. He did mention he would have liked to have introduced Brainiac in Superman 3 and who knows what after that. It really is a shame.

My overruling dissappointment with SR was the lack of understanding of the moral and ethical make up of Superman thruout the film, and the third act does not escape that scrutiny.
The plan of Superman in the third act clearly put human lives in Jeopardy. A jeopardy that results in three deaths, and the near death of Luthor and Kitty.
Superman does not actively or passively kill!
I know I'm going to hear about him killing the Kryptonian criminals in the comics, however that act sent Superman into a severe emotional state of despair. Nothing in SR shows any personal effect on Superman because of his actions being responsible for the loss of life.

On a lesser note.........If NK is located just off the eastern seaboard of the US, how in the name of Great Caesars Ghost did Luthor's helicopter get stranded on a remote tropical island?

and...maybe.....if Donner and co. had stayed on.....we would have seen how the Clark / Lois / Superman relationship would have naturally progressed after S2.

I mean, in Donner's version, Supes turns back time at the end of S2. Now, the question, has Superman learned his lesson? Will he repeat the same mistakes again?

Will Lois figure out Superman's secret again? What happened to Lex after S2? Was the FOS rebuilt? Was Jor-el still there????

i guess we'll never know........

well said, afan. For me, SR's Superman lacked the moral compass that defines the character for me.

and remember........Jason has already killed a guy. yah, he was defending his mom.....and it was probably not intentional......but they didn't have to actually make him kill the guy....knocked out and incapicitated, maybe......but not actually kill.....

like father like son.....i guess.....

They......exactly,...... as you have stated with alternative plot points, a little more inspired writing on their part could have saved this film.

Another of SR's faults that the third act magnifies is the total lack of the film to give "the people" any identity in the film. Aside from the main characters(and even that sparingly) did Superman ever once address an individual.

Donner's Superman was chock full of little vignettes between Superman and the general public. The girl with her cat, the crooks on the boat, the cat burgalur, the arresting officer, the priceless tho wordless interraction with Air Force One's pilot, the list goes on and on, and yet I am stumped to recall any such interractions in SR. Making the general population in the film totally faceless and iconsequential. Just mindless cattle moving to and fro.

Now back to the magnification of this in Act 3. Where was a national response to NK. Surely the emergence of a continent of the eastern seaboard should raise an eyebrow someplace, but then within the framework of SR, the abscence of any real people(aside from the main characters)reacting as real people do, should come I guess as no surprise.

or....how bout this.......intead of Supes leaving for Krypton because he read a single newspaper story.......we had this:

One day, Superman receives an urgent DISTRESS SIGNAL / MESSAGE.......IN HIS NATIVE KRYPTONIAN LANGUAGE ( could be something he hears or reads or both ).

Essentially, the message tells Superman of a group of Kryptonian survivors stranded among the remains of Krypton.......it gives Superman the coordinates......tells Supes that their resources are running out fast ( thus, a limited window of opportunity ).....and makes a DESPERATE PLEA FOR HELP.....

Of course, at the end, it would be revealed that Lex somehow deciphered the Kryptonian language and then fabricated this message to lure Superman into a trap ( the radioactive remains of Krypton ). This would also showcase Lex's genius intellect.

Now, whether or not Superman told Lois before he left, IF he had received such a message, there would have been MORE URGENCY in his departure. IOW, he was specifically responding to a Kryptonian CRY FOR HELP and was trying to RESCUE HIS FELLOW KRYPTONIAN........

something like that would have provided a more logical RATIONALE for supes leaving.........and it would have explained better his sudden departure.....

You are right, the only moment in SR that was like that was after he catched the plane. He boards it and makes his speech about plane travel being safe. Then the South African host lady smiles/smirks at him. That was it. Maybe the young boy with his camera phone would count but not by much.

Another thing was the lack of Lex & Supes interaction.

What chance did Superman have to address any individuals though? He was in a constant rush in the 3rd act. Metropolis was full of dangerous events occuring and he managed to only just stop them, then he had to rush out to save Lois/Richard/Jason, get them out of there, and then confront Lex, etc, etc. He just didnt have a chance to interact with anyone, all of those events he stopped were literally happening one after the other, hell, even the DP Globe started falling while Superman was still stopping the underground fire!

He did interact with the public when he first returns though, he gives the speech on the plane, and he interacts with Kitty who, for all Superman knew at the time was just a faceless member of the public.

I would of liked to know what happend to the guy with the big gun. It cuts when supes get shot in the eye. You think supes blew him off the building ha ha

I mentioned the main characters, of which Kitty was one. In the plane he was speechifying to a large group.

I was pointing out the lack of any interraction with individuals in the entirety of the film and how that may explain the lack of any thought by the writers to including a response to NK by the people.

But for all Superman knew, she was just a member of the public, Supes didnt know she was Lex's girlfriend at that point.

Hey Lex

I think all those guys just went to jail.
