Comics Have Spidey comics passed the point of of no return?

I have to slightly agree with you here. Quesada has to know by now that whenever he says ANYTHING about the Spider-Man marriage he sets off time bombs left and right all over the message boards. I have a feeling that Aunt May will probably die and it's all about Aunt May in this one. Quesada is possibly just using it to rile fans up some more about MJ dying. Because I've noticed in all of Quesada's interviews that he's shown distaste for the marriage in his OWN opinion. Now just because it's his opinion doesn't mean that's what should be done in the comic and, at this juncture, I'm sure the guy knows that.

Besides he's always the loudest voice saying about how he doesn't want to age Peter Parker. No matter which way you get rid of MJ, besides a magical retcon, it's going to age the character of Peter Parker in some shape, way, or form.

But, we'll see in the end of the summer/beginning of fall. Until then we can only speculate. In all honesty though I'm more excited about who the creative teams are that will be taking over the Spidey books once One More Day is over.

No character is ever past the point of no return. All it takes is a good writer to come by and restore what makes the character great and iconic.
All Spidey needs is a halfway decent writer to come by and restore what we love about him. NO character is beyond repair, ever.

Couldnt agree more.

And I second what Lt. figgnuts said. One thing I really like about Marvel nowadays is how they are revamping old heroes and making them interesting again. People like Luke Cage, Spider-Woman, Ms. Marvel prove that indeed there is no character ever beyond repair.

Good points being made here.

For me, the main problem is that nothing new is being created. All the storylines are deriative of old stuff. How many shocking revelations about the past can we have? It's like all the writers are intrested in is playing with the old characters and storylines, and adding shocking twists to them; Peter is actually a clone after all (no he isn't!). Norman isn't dead after all. The spidey bite wasn't actually by chance, it was intended by magic. Gwen slept with Norman. And so on.

It simply shows a lack of forethought by Marvel. Shock for the sake of it. Imagine the same at DC; Pa Kent was actually gay all the time, but Martha blackmailed him into marrying her. Thomas Wayne actually paid Joe Chill to kill his wife and make it look like an accident, but Chill panicked and killed them both.

As one famous (but his name escapes me) comic writer said, you can't just gather the lumber, you have to replant some trees yourself.

JMS has, to his credit, introduced new stuff; Peter being a teacher, and.....well, that's it, and the new powers are not his fault as far as I know.

Anyway, my point is, Marvel need to come up with fresh, new Spider-Man stories and characters. Spidey needs new villains and allies, Peter needs new friends and rivals, shake up the entire criminal status quo...and have characters develop.

Good point Kevin, I think the reason the writers are doing this however is because they think there are no more fresh ideas out there. It may be true to an extent, we live in an age of comics where just about everything has been thought of already by at least someone out there. Don't get me wrong, I personally can think of a lot of new material for spider-man but i don't think marvel would go for it. But my point is, in general, coming up with new material nowadays is like creating a new super-hero with powers that hasn't been used already. Comics have been around so long that it seems like every possible storyline has been thought of already. Thats why writers try to change the past. Nowadays its not what you do, but how you do it. Bendis is the model example of this.

I don’t know how you came to the conclusion that ASM has a problem continuing to attract the younger audience these days, if this is the case however, I don’t think Marvel particularly cares.
ASM sales figures are consistently high plus the arcs these days tend to be more focused on the life/death repercussions of PP/SM recent decisions, so Marvel probably don’t care if there is not a significant percentage of the sales coming from the teen market.
Point is- ASM is selling well and possibly the current storylines are not aimed specifically at teens.
USM is designed for the teens and is filling that role.
Well, when a comic book title that is considered a best-seller , on average, selling in the tens of thousands of copies when, years ago, a best-selling comic would sell for hundreds of thousands or even millions of copies, I'd say there were some readers lost along the way. And of course, Sensational Spider-Man and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man have actually declined in sales, although I'm sure some of that has to do with Amazing Spider-Man being far more heavily promoted and recognizable than those two titles. And I do think Marvel does try to get more younger readers since having lots of folks read their comics is what their goal is. You mentioned Ultimate Spider-Man, and that was a line originally conviced of as a title for "kids" and folks just getting into Spidey because it wouldn't have all the continuity hang-ups. Later on, the same strategy was applied to the "Marvel Age" line and then the "Marvel Adventures" line, which are geared towards pre-adolescent kids. Then of course you've got the merchandising, movies, and video games--all of which, ideally, are supposed to help generate interest in the comic.

Well apart from his clearly definable attributes in terms of his characteristics, Spidey appeals to many readers for a variety of reasons. I my perspective is that he probably lingered in college too long.
The character needed to progress, needed a writer who was not scared to evolve PP/SM beyond what Lee&Ditko created. Marv Wolfman was the guy who did that. He took Spider-man to the next level and the series was all the better for it, it gave ASM a realistic importance back that it had been lacking for a few years. Seriously it would be dumb if he stayed in college forever, none of us would be able to relate to him now or ten years from now.

Why I would certainly agree that if one doesn't shake up the status quo once in awhile, things do tend to get stale, eventually, there needs to be ways of maintaining it (i.e. the illusion of change). Also, having the character age along with the reader, while certainly making him relatable to the aging reader, risks distancing any younger reader coming in. Heck, reading the letters pages of the older Spider-Man comics from when Stan Lee was still writing the title, it was a complaint back then that Peter was aging too fast.

My last point stands. In contrast to your ideal scenario of having PP remain a youth forever, one of my favourite things about ol webhead is that he did age. Exactly how much more this will happen is questionable, but that’s another story. It gives the series a greater resonance and realism if it is a journey through someone’s life instead of a dumb cartoon scenario were no one ages (Simpsons?).
Also PP/SM is still unappreciated/ misunderstood- he’s on the run from the authorities right now!

I'm saying that its far better for a character to mature in experience rather than physically mature, which of course Peter Parker has done. Plus its not like cartoons and comic strips loose their popularity if the characters don't age. "Peanuts," of course had Charlie Brown and the gang stay roughly in the same grade for decades, and is one of the most successful and culturally definable strips ever made. Simpsons has been a continual success for 20 years and STILL going strong. Characters aging is not all that important; characters learning from past experiences is, although that does involve aging.

But the point is we saw that evolution in the comics, and now Peter IS an adult.
Staying in the same status quo, age wise forever would have been dumb. I would not say his problems now are the same as when he was a youth, they are more an evolution of his decisions as Spider-man.
This takes us up to current ASM, which I think is pretty stupid because he would not be where he is now, it’s JMS fault and his crap writing.

Other problems he still encounters which I think are correctly written is the money problems he has from time to time. Since this is something we can all relate to. Well, I say that but how much exactly has MJ made during her various high profile careers?… You would think they would have enough money now to have a pretty nice nest. Well anyway, that is probably something we can all relate to no matter where we are in life.

Certainly the money troubles have been a constant theme, and its something anyone of any age can relate to (good point). But the idea of Peter having to take on adult responsibilities--mainly maintaining a job to earn enough money to take care of his aunt--while he's still a teenager who still wants to date girls AND on top of that has to be a crime-fighter, takes on a little more resonance when he's a teen, especially when it comes to themes of personal responsibility vs. pursuing ones desires. I'm not saying it can't and doesn't work for Spidey today as an adult (heck, he still has to be the breadwinner of the family even to this day) but rather his being a teenager/college student gets the point across a little easier.

BTW, I agree that crap writing has done far more damage than whether or not Peter is 16 or 26.

Well, that angle of the old David and Goliath scenario does probably work better in the context of kid in a costume being mistaken as an adult,- but there’s so much MORE to Spider-Man than that.
What about how in those days Spidey was basically mocking his enemies in battle because he was nervous of screwing up, and how these days he has evolved into a highly trained and confident super powered professional, able to deal w/ way more dangerous and delicate situations than when he was 16.
What about the story of Peter’s personal life, and the story’s of the supporting casts lives? …what happened to Harry, Betty and Flash and co. That’s the stuff that I think makes Spider-man comics absorbing and unique. The MU is like a real world were times passes. By contrast Batman is 29 forever- how boring.

All good points. One of the problems I have with the Unmasking was that, although it brings back the supporting cast to get their reactions, it actually limits Peter interaction with them (although Peter David seems to be the only one of the Spider-Man writers who seems to realize their lives and little subplots actually matter). As for Batman, you can get away with him being 29, 35, or even 40 forever because, since he was an adult superhero to begin with, it wasn't all that important that he aged but rather he was someone older than you. Robin, however, since he WAS a kid and supposed to represent the "kids" who read about Batman HAD to be a kid for the dynamic duo to work. Hence why DC has, at last count, had four different versions of Robin. Or five if you count Carrie Kelley from Dark Knight Returns. Spider-Man, on the other hand, was created as a teenager but was also someone you couldn't exactly pass the mantle on to (as the Clone Saga pretty much proved), so aging him has been more problematic, meaning he has to stay as close to the average reader as possible.

Fair enough.

I think he is great to read when he was a teen and also now, but I am glad he has aged.
I don’t think it’s the case that he is better as a youth or adult, although we both have a different perspective on his aging, what is most important is the person who the writer is.
Look at DeMatties and Stern- those guys have written arcs that are easily as good as Stan Lee’s stuff, yet they focused on Spidey in a different stage of his life. In fact a big part of what made them so good was that they knew how to write PP/SM as good as an adult as Stan wrote Spidey as a kid.

Well, I agree who he is as a character how that character is portrayed is the most important thing. I'm just saying that, as a character, Spider-Man is a little better when he is a kid moreso than he does as an adult; after all, nearly every other intro to Spider-Man from the movies, to cartoons, and even comics like Ultimate Spider-Man all start him off in high school or college (although the live action series from the 70s didn't, but that sucked on numerous other levels that had nothing to do with Peter being in grad school instead of high school). Still, you're correct in saying that some of those stories where he is an adult are not bad and it certainly would be a huge mistake to somehow "reverse his aging," especially in such artificial ways as Marvel has tried to do in the past.

What about adult power fantasy? It still does it for me. I can still imagine what it would be like to be PP, it’s just now since he is an adult we can also have others layers to the central characters life that did not exist when he was a teen. That is of course when he is in the hands of a good writer.
Which he is not right now.

True, but of course the misunderstood and underappreciated teenager who secretly has superpowers I would argue has broader appeal than the misunderstood and underappreciated adult because you have the kid factor involved, although certainly both have enormous appeal. And yes, JMS leaving the title is long overdue since he's been steadily loosing gas on ASM for the past three years.

now if only marve would find a way to reunite the SONS OF THE TIGER:ninja:

I really really think JMS and Quesada are trying to fool us BIG time. Everybody thinks MJ is going to die or disappear from the comics somehow. But i'm willing to bet my whole bank account (thats not saying much) that MJ isn't going anywhere. JMS isn't stupid enough to destroy a character who is just as important to Spiderman's history as J. Jonah Jameson. Aunt May's different, she's an old woman, and she has to die sooner or later. But what would Spiderman comics be like if not one but TWO of Peter's true loves had died or gone away? First Gwen then MJ? I dont think so, if MJ died, Peter would be a bachelor for the rest of his comic life. Trust me, MJ aint goin' anywhere.

I dont think she's going anywhere either, but i DO think that she, as well as the rest of the planet, may be magically mind-wiped by Dr. Strange and/or Loki into forgetting that Peter is Spider-Man...effectively ending the marriage. At least for the time being.

I think it is safe to agree that SM comics have been on a decline since the early '90s. That for every good story there were three bad ones, some taking years (cough Clone Saga cough).

But recently despite some nice modifcations recently by Jenkins with the villains and JMS bringing Peter and MJ together again quite well....that it has jumped the shark?

I mean Gwen is now a ****e who NOrman had sex with and had his illegitmate children and hid them from Pete, which is why she was killed and MJ knew all along, Spidey now got his powers from a spider-god and is transforming into some super powered freak, he is a team player on the Avengers, has no supporting cast, his entire relationship with Flash, Betty and Liz has been retconned in the last two years and the unmasking of Peter Parker was deliberate on national television and has kind of ruined his whole identity.

Aunt May since being stupidly resurrected from her great death has gone on to just get shot by a sniper and Peter is wearing black in a movie tie-in and is about three months away from retconning the MJ marriage by erasing 40 years worth of character development and history.

Is it safe to say the character we loved to read and what made him great in the '60s, '70s, '80s and even parts of the '90s is now gone, forever?

I kind of am just fed up with what Marvel has done and am leaving, I think.

Absolutely, agreed.

If you want real Spider-Man, you gotta get Ultimate Spider-Man.

JMS has, to his credit, introduced new stuff; Peter being a teacher, and.....well, that's it, and the new powers are not his fault as far as I know.

You know, I also have to say that I LIKED the totem idea as a possibility at first. Originally, JMS posed the question, "hey, what if what you thought was true wasn't as true as you thought?" and THAT was kind of cool, because it was really just looking at the same thing through a different lens without any kind of retcon. It was an interesting little side-story that had a decent enough conclusion.

Then they had to go and crank out The Other and ruin all of that.

I dont think she's going anywhere either, but i DO think that she, as well as the rest of the planet, may be magically mind-wiped by Dr. Strange and/or Loki into forgetting that Peter is Spider-Man...effectively ending the marriage. At least for the time being.

Hmm...I worry that if that were to happen, people would cry foul, because that kind of sounds like Johns' run on Flash (or was it Waid? I forget).

Spiderman Jumped that shark repeatedly beginning(for me at least) with the carnage saga, followed by the symbiont and the clone atrocity in no particular order.
I don't think it has reached the point of no return? No.
What SM needs is a good editor and a good writer that will stay on the book for at least two years, one to fix all the problems in the book and one to put it back on track.

What Spiderman needs, is to grow up and the writers have to accept that he's not 16 anymore, he's nearly 30 years old. Aunt May needs to pass away once and for all, Peter needs to get his baby back, he needs to stay married to MJ, and last but not least, he needs to have his supporting cast play a role again ( does anybody know where jill stacy and Robbie's son went?). That in a nutshell, is what would make Spiderman comics awesome.

Absolutely, agreed.

If you want real Spider-Man, you gotta get Ultimate Spider-Man.

You must not have been reading the past 20 issues, huh? Wasn't he caught and ummasked by the Kingpin AGAIN? Yeah...not feelin' it.

Plus in ultimates Gwen Stacy was a very unimportant character that was so unimportant they let carnage kill her off. Yeah, you definately want to read ultimate.:dry:

Also, let's not forget He-Peter and She-Peter fighting Magnet-Ock...

Wow. That book has really gotten bad...

I think the only plus in Ultimate Spidey was he dated Kitty Pride at one point. That was interesting. They should have explored their relationship more before throwing him back with MJ.

^So.......has Ultimate gone past the point of no return then?

(especially with Bags leaving???)

Back to the main topic tho....
As per Real World Spidey...."if" they keep MJ alive....but give her an "amnesia wipe-out", thus ruining and ending the marriage...that would still result in a "Storyline" that would ultimately end up being retconned and wasting our time (taking us no where progression-wise), since it'd no doubt eventually lead back to them being together again with their "memories and minds intact" or what-have you. It'd be another cheap (unimaginative) storyline gimmick.

Just bring in a good WRITER that can handle real world topics now and no more big events that take us in circles please! Spidey can be fixxed for sure.

JQ needs to realize that there is no way to take Spidey back now and make Pete look like "YOUNG TEENAGE KID". You'd have to take away his clothing style, his friends, his job..,...heck, everything....not just his marriage.

A lot of people are posting about the decline in writing for the spider-man books like it's:

1. New and never seen before

and

2. Only in bug books that this concept appears

Come on people let's not get rose or beer googles on our history here. Yeah I agree I hate the recent storylines (though "last stand" was excellent) but I've been here before and I hate to break it to everyone but we'll be here again. Last time I stopped reading bugs was when he was revealed to be a clone and decided to take a vacation while letting some backstreet boy clone of peter with bleach blonde hair take over. I was furious "I'll never read this again" but then they decided to kill off ben and I went back to reading. The point is if you don't like the story lines just stop reading them not forever don't go declaring you'll never or always do anything (definately the road to looking stupid later on) just stop for the present. When enough sales are lost they'll change.

Every comic has highs and lows. Not all stories are winners and not all writers are good (or competent). Just remember we've all been here before and we'll all be there again.

I always thought and still think that Spider-Man comics can be fixed. You would have to have some editors and writers that really care about doing it though.

You really have to go back to the Clone Saga storyline and either truly tie up those loose ends (and that's where many of us disagree, as some say stillbirth, no loose ends, but isn't that a little callous, since we see that Norman seems to have had the baby taken away?).

Also this Aunt May that has been in the Avengers mansion, and has seen her house blown up, etc, should be written as a clone. The real Aunt May dies in #400, and they could retro that in a very nice way.

Also 60% of people get divorced. Also people get sick. There are a lot of ways to smoothly, and in an adult way, end that marraige. The easiest way would probably be her getting a huge modeling gig that has her travel the world all the time, and have him get back to getting really into his superhero work as a loner again, and them just deciding, they've grown apart. It's alright, and honestly it makes sense, since Gwen really was the girl for him in every way.

You can't deny that, even if you love MJ, because Gwen was someone that was gorgeous, but at the same time can talk science with him. She was the "Smart Blonde!" Truly an original :)

Well Gwen is gone, MJ can move on and Peter can get back to growing, getting older, but still having substance n his free time.

I disagree with him being a fulltime teacher. He either has to fight less crime, or call in sick all the time and it is ridiculous.

Have him Freelance Photography and Substitue Teacher. 1 day a week teaching, he can be the schools' students favorite teacher and still fix problems the kids are having , in learning science.

The stories are all there to be told. The canvas isn't blank because you have to respect the past, but you can implement the past and change the future however you want.

If what my reliable source tells me, you've hit the nail on the head. I've posted this in another forum on this site, but I'll repost it here in case some of you haven't read it.

A friend of mine owns a comic shop. He's got a couple of good sources at Marvel and DC. We we're talking about "One More Day" via email and this is what he told me:

Marvel wants to put the character of Spider-Man into such an awful predicament that the readers will be so relieved to get ‘their’ Spidey back that the ret-con will ‘go down’ easier.

Everything that's happened since Civil war has been part of a grand design.

Before Spidey went public with his ID, my friend told me it was going to happen. Everyone knows that this was a bad idea for the long run. Spider-Man can't remain a viable character if the whole world knows who he is.

Aunt May's shooting was a part 2 of the plan to screw up Peter's life.

He's told me what to expect by the end of "Back in Black". I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say that Peter's life gets even worse and literally pushes him to a level of desperation we never thought possible.

All of this sets the stage for "One More Day". Quesada has already told us that by the end of the story Spidey is going to resemble the Lee/Ditko/Romita Spidey. We know what that means. That can't happen unless certain things are undone.....the marriage, the unmasking, and the event s that take place during "Back in Black". Telling us that Dr. Strange plays a large part in this story is a give-away. They're going to use him to reset Peter's life in a manner that undoes everything Marvel's published recently or they'll have everyone forget these things happened.

It's the Ultimate cop out....write the character into a hole he can't escape from then say "just for get about it all and pretend it didn't happen".
