Little Richard is STILL raising hell over how Rock & Roll ripped him off.

Little Richard is STILL raising hell over how Rock & Roll ripped him off.

The saddest thing about that is how the Beatles constantly pointed to him as a major influence but music journalists at the time just glossed over it.

It reminds me of when Eminem debuted and people kept trying to get him to say he was influenced by artists by other genres of music or tried to connect what he does to the Beastie Boys. :whatever:

No the Beastie Boys are their own genre. They rap, but aren't exactly hip hop. They are funny, but don't get into Weird Al territory.

I'm speaking more so about their early work for Def Jam. That stuff was all hip hop. I'd hardly call them their own genre though as other artists have and still do similar things.

But I'm pretty sure they did it first. Probably the first successful mixing of rap and rock. Others have done it, but I'm sure they were the pioneers, other than Debra Harry from Blondie.

Little Richard needs to "SHUT UP!" He's been playing Rock & Roll since the 1950's. I'm pretty sure every else is dead now.

We know you invented Rock & Roll, Rich. Just let it go. There's no one left to dispute your claims.

When I was in the 1st grade some little girl called me a "stupid Mexican" even though my parents are from Ecuador, it's a common ignorance that people naturally assume that all hispanics are from Mexico.

Even among Mexicans and Central American countries there's a bit of bigotry because of different customs, language dialect, religions.

When I worked at McDonald's I could tell right away who were Mexican, Salvadorean.

The Punk Rock and Hip Hop scenes of the late 70's early 80's were kind of meshed together. The Beastie Boys weren't pioneers of that style nor was Debra Harry. Harry was the first to have a hit record meshing the two and the Beastie Boys were doing it AFTER Run DMC. Some might cite Cooky Puss but there's stuff that predates that too.

I think some of that just has to do with what part of the country you live in. I know in California and Arizona most Hispanics are Mexican. Both states have large Mexican populations and are very right on the Mexican boarder. If you're in Florida people would probably assume you're either Cuban or Puerto Rican.

When I was 18, a couple Native Americans jumped me and knocked out a tooth because they thought I was Mexican. They would've done it anyway had they known I was white, but still....

I've heard the name Cooky Puss, but none of the music. Might have to give it a listen.

I was pretty young back then (late 70's, early 80's) and living with a Jehova's Witness aunt who freaked out when my cousin got a KISS Alive album, so you can imagine what her reaction would have been to anything punk rock/rap.

I didn't know that about RUN DMC. I only heard their hardcore hip hop stuff, till they did that 1 song with Aerosmith "Walk This Way".

I also remember Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five back then having a hit with "The Message".

Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones relaesed his autobiography recentley and he did an interview saying when they first came over to America they were surprised by the reaction because they were playing the black American RnB music they loved back to white American kids who had never heard it or wouldn't usually listen to it.

Here's a question; would you be offended if someone used your race as an identifier?

Even as a white guy, yes I would, which is why I strive to describe people by their qualities, not their race (which gets me blank looks when I describe someone until I say that they are black)

For me I guess it depends on how they do it and the circumstances behind it.

I would certainly prefer for someone to point me out as "That white guy over there." than by saying "That fat guy over there."

I think the norm in society is to honestly be like "that *insert race here* guy/girl" when describing someone that's not white. That's just what we do. When you don't mention their race, it's assumed they're white.

My skin color is one of my highly visible physical traits. I'm not going to be offended if someone has to say I'm black when they're describing me. It's not going to help much unless they add other descriptions, anyway. I'm not the only black guy on Earth. The only black guy in my circle of friends, yes. On Earth, no.

I'd only be offended if it was like the Debbie situation on sealab 2021.

I live in new mexico and that is the main indentifier for everyone. Especially us white folk. :hehe:

I don't take offense.

For me it would depend on the context. If someone at Wal-Mart was describing me to someone who didn't know my name & they said "The tall black guy in produce who wears glasses", that's perfectly acceptable. If it were used as my ONLY defining trait I'd have a problem. I remember in the Marines they tried to teach us that there was no race, that we were all one, that there was only one color which was green. Well, inevitably not everyone subscribed to this wholeheartedly. This degenerated in some circles to "some of us are 'light' green and some of us are 'dark' green." I always thought that was stupid. Nevertheless, I would occasionally run into people-usually people of authority/rank, who would refer to me as "dark green" as if it were my name. Thus, in my eyes, their true nature is revealed. Anyone who would actually say something like "Hey, Dark Green-come here" should spontaneously combust.

My mum gets angry if people use the descriptive term coloured rather than black when talking about her as it has bad connotations to some black peoples past.

I guess I would prefer if people didn't know my name and wanted to identify me they said 'the black guy in the green sweater' rather than just black guy as its more descriptive and more of an identifier than just a racial based term

I wasn't sure if this topic was about identifying someone as a race or identifying yourself by race. I usually identify someone by name like if someone helped me in a store, I don't say yeah the hispanic girl helped me.

The young lady wearing such and such helped me.

And if it's Wal-Mart or Target where everyone is dressed alike?
I'm not saying it's necessary. I'm simply saying in certain context it's fine. You can say the Hispanic girl helped you & it's not necessarily a big deal. Sometimes we make thinga a bigger deal than they are by overreacting or overthinking. It's not like in Beverly Hills Cop III, where the cops hear "African-American male" & IMMEDIATELY view Axel as a suspect, or later when someons says "Did you hear some blakc guy shot Uncle Dave?"
