HBO's Game of Thrones - - - - Part 13

I loved it how this episode mirrored the "Mercy" chapter GRRM released a couple days ago.

It's one of those things...I think the kids aging actually works in Arya's favor here, because by the time she does the WoW stuff she'll probably be old enough that the sexual stuff doesn't seem as weird as it does in the books.

I agree they are interesting people, but I do think a lot of that can be streamlined and probably will be if they are going to try and do this whole run in seven seasons (which I still think is too short, especially since the show is only increasing in popularity).

Seven seasons? Hmm...well...
S1=BK1
S2=BK2
S3=Half of Bk 3 with tidbits of 4 in there
S4=looks to be the rest of 3 with a good portion of 4

So the real question is Season 5. If they manage to get most or all of books 4 and 5 into Season 5, they'll be fine. Which I personally think they could do because there was a lot of stuff in 4 that I wouldn't mind cutting down on...a lot. I wasn't all the interested in the Cersei stuff until the end, and in book 5 I wouldn't be surprised if they cut characters like Quetyn Martell all together (he really didn't do anything). Books 4 and 5 definitely could stand to have some of the fat nipped off them.

However, if the do S5 where they cover book 4 and a good portion of S5, that would leave S6 to finish up the rest of Bk5 and cover S6 and S7 to round out the end. Which I think could still be doable.

It might be a little tight, but I honestly don't think they would need much extra. One extra season would be more than enough, or even adding a few extra episodes onto season 7. Either way I think they're on a pretty good pace.

Wow, there was a lot to read up on. I need to read the books but my reading list is quite long and the time is somewhat limited. But I am going to read them if only to fill in some gaps and not have to pass over so many spoiler and blacked out tags of what's going on or will be going on that aren't yet revealed.

I got a bundle on the Kindle and it saved me some money. It took a long time to read, these are not short books and yeah, there are some tangential wanderings that could be shaved off to spare time. Of course the thing is, how does one really know how important or not something really is when the story isn't yet finished?

HBO said F' it and renewed the show for seasons 5 and 6 already. :D

That's cray cray talk. Nah I won't hold my breath but at least I hope it's being at least trimmed, as long as they get the essential, Arianne and Doran, if it's even just only that, I'd be pleased. I need my Dorne fix.

They won't remove Arianne, Doran or Quentyn. Those three are pretty essential for Dance of the Dragons 2.0

The things that are essential for GoT from AFFC and ADWD

Jon
Dany
Theon
Arya
Bran
Sansa
Jaime
Mel
Davos
Stannis
Tyrion
Cersei
Victarion
Brienne
Sam
Margery
Barristan
Jorah
Asha/Yara

Some of that will be this season, but make no mistake, anything major from the Iron Islands or Doran will be reduced quite a bit.

That's the only one I disagree with. He really served no purpose in the books.
His only purpose was really to act like an idiot and set the dragons free...getting killed in the process. They could easily free the dragons in another way. Besides that, I guess it was interesting learning that Dorne had originally set to pair Danny with Quentyn, but you could easily mention in passing that their families were supposed to be matched. That's all you need really.

It would still help to know what
tag this and [blackout] tag that is talking about without learning something inadvertently. So and so dies, or someone actually is someone/thing else or whatever.

They will not go past a season 8. They just won't. HBO couldn't afford it.

couldnt afford it? is this because of the renegotiated salaries?

I think they could do 7 season and maybe a trilogy of films

HBO has made Sex and the City and now Entourage into movies

The cost would ballon to an insane amount. Considering they had to go ask for more money again this season for effects, they won't want to be seeing those crazy renegotiation numbers. They won't do films. The showrunners/creators have been saying 80 hours of television from the start. They will do 7, potentially 8 seasons. Season 7 could be doubled in size and divided into part 1 and part 2.

The show is such a cash cow for HBO that I don't see budget being a problem. I mean, how many other HBO shows have a line of action figures? This is a juggernaut that will probably surpass The Sopranos when all is said and done. As long as the ratings keep skyrocketing and the merchandise keeps selling, I don't think HBO will say no to an extra million here and there added to the budget.

It wouldn't be an extra million or two. We would be looking at doubling, heck tripling the overall budget. I don't think people realize how "cheap" the cast is right now. It is why they have it written in the contract that they can pass GRRM. Can you imagine how much Maisie, Dinklage, or Emilia would cost come renegotiation? Tens of millions at the very least. That is avoiding the other important characters who would demand the same kind of pay.

People loved Rome, people watched Rome, people bought Rome. Rome died. Why do people ignore Benioff and Weiss? They have been saying this since the beginning.

I disagree...The show ROME died because of the excessive budget in sets and location development. They have stated countless times that they learned from Rome and have made a excellent structure to make the Game of Thrones show.

It wont be over budget in that sense...Contracts can be renegotiated for films much easier.

I find it difficult to compare Rome with GOT. Critically acclaimed as it was, Rome never had the fanbase and overall marketability that GOT has.

Many are all going to be really surprised come the announcement of the end in 2018. Why do people think we are getting AFFC and ADWD material this year? They are not slowing down. They are keeping the pace up. Next year they will do two books at once.

GoT has gone over budget the last three years. Do you know why this show hasn't pulled a Rome? Because even over budget, they aren't pushing it. They recast when they need to. We rarely see the Direwolves. The show will soon cost $100m to make. Come renegotiation, the show could end up costing twice that. They don't have the money Marvel or Disney have to throw at a RDJ, much less 10-15 principle cast members.

Lets just say Jon, Arya, Jaime, Cersei, Tyrion, and Dany make it to season 8. Say they give Dinklage, Maisie, Emilia, Kit, Nikolaj and Lena a million an episode. That is already the first season budget without one dragon, without one other cast member, without one set. And well the show isn't going to end on a whimper. The real battles are yet to come. If The Others ever do show up, it is going to cost a lot more then Blackwater.

It at least shows that violence can have a point, it wasn't put there just to be flashy. It shows Arya's transition into who she will become. I can watch that over and over again, if only for that little smile right at the end. :)

It was just so chilling and badass at the same time, the way she slowly planted the sword into that first dude she killed this episode. Also, Pedro Pascal really sold how charming, but at the same time dangerous, Oberyn is. Can't wait to see more of him.

Though, in fairness, Darth didn't post a link. Fair game.
