I gave up reading the above article. Martin's work is far from perfect and should be examined through the prisms of gender, politics, race, etc. However, the above text fails; I stopped reading after a paragraph.

Give it another shot, Sady Doyle is hilarious and has some solid arguments... and the comment section is highly entertaining. :hehe:

The Flash!

:oldrazz:

Not likely. He's worked on pilots every year for over a decade and he was still able to do two episodes in S2 (airing around the time he was doing Arrow) and four in S3.

Holly s***t that poster!!!

However, as a book reader, I don't fully understand the fire.

I think I might have some possible extrapolations from history and guesswork to apply here, even though yeah, the fire isn't in the book.

The first factor is intimidation. A giant wall of fire illuminates both their opponent, but also their sheer numbers and the scale of the attack. It's one thing to hold the line. It's another thing to hold the line when you know there are literally 100+ opponents you have to go through. Even if all the forces arrayed aren't actually combatants, it scary as hell.

The second is to keep your own forces focused on conquering the enemy because there is no retreat. The Wildlings are notoriously unorganized and free spirited. But if you cut off their retreat, even the most crazy and independent member has only one area to go. Think Cortez and his sinking of his army's ships.

Third, and this one may be a little too crazy, fire destroys wights. It's a defensive parameter to keep the zombie horde off his army's back while the assault Castle Black. And even if the wights and White Walkers are far-away, the fire may have the placebo effect on the troops.

No i'm not blaming the actor himself, I just think he was miscast by whoever hired him. It just wasn't believable at all that he was a great warrior. He just seemed like a large lumbering guy more akin to Hodor really.

He is a great powerlifter really in real life but that probably doesn't translate greatly to depicting swordplay or much agility.

He was just hyped so much the whole series as this amazing warrior and I just didn't see it. It was still a good battle though mainly due to oberyn.

Really the only reason he is a great warrior is because he is so big men literally piss themselves when they see him. He just overpowers swaths of opponents in the open field with his brute strength. He uses a great sword with one hand! That's ****ing insane. His brutality is known through out the Seven Kingdoms so when men see him in the field he has an upper hand just based on fear automatically.

I thought the same. He fought like a lumbering buffoon.

Well look at how fast Oberyn was moving, one swing of that sword connects with the Viper and you know he is done.

I considered that to be a byproduct of just how much faster Oberyn was. That, and the ****ing human sized sword he held in one hand. The BTS video had the fight coordinator saying it wasn't possible to have him being fast with as heavy a sword as he had. I think it's really hard to showcase Oberyn's prowess at the same time as showcasing the Mountain's. The only real remedy I can think of would have been to show a straight up fight with the Mountain and another warrior or warriors that he would have owned.

I'm assuming that the fight was one sided (in favor of Oberyn) in the book as well. I don't think that covering all the bases in this one fight would have been possible. Unless some, even just a little bit, of CGI or just throwing a large budget at the fight scene.

Yeah a lot of this makes sense. The Mountain is better in the open field.

Yeah I don't think we'll see anymore Sansa or Theon. Also:

The biggest fire the north has ever seen!

Me thinks the fire is maybe the "great equalizer" between the Night's Watch and Mance Rayder?

Interesting... what do you believe in then?

I'm not saying I follow the Nihlist philosophy to a T. I do believe nothing matters in the end. No matter how good and moral you may be you can always get screwed in the end while someone who is evil and has no morals can flourish in life. It's all random. I think things such as karma are nonsense. I believe there are no gods or higher powers or heaven or hell. I believe people should do what they want with their own lives as long as they aren't causing harm to others. It's why I loved another HBO show True Detective as well because I related to the character Rust Cohle's viewpoints a little too much probably. Haha.

I was joking, that's why I used the :oldrazz:

There could be many reasons, who knows.

Richard Armitage, Rupert Penny Jones, David Oyelowo, ect.

Spooks/MI5 loves killing off leads as much as Game Of Thrones does.

Jorah Mormont (Ian Glenn didn't last long on Spooks/MI5)
It's not that they killed him that bothered me... it's what they did to his character as a person (the whole 'John Bateman' thing and what not) they murdered his character before they killed his character (if that makes sense *lol*).

Anywho, back to GoT. I don't think I commented on my thoughts on the last episode... the combat - brutal and definitely not something you're going to forget. Before that, I LOVED Tyrion and Jamie in the cell and Tyrion recounting the story about their cousin. LOVED the way Arya kind of broke down at the Bloody Gate with just that laugh. Sansa showing she's learned a thing or two from LF

Can't wait for the next episode at the Wall (I'm hoping Ghost gets to see some action as well?)

I understand that point of view, but I do believe that if you can make things better for everyone, then you should, it doesn't matter who or what created the Universe, us or what happens when we die.

So, I found these pretty cool comic book pages illustrated by Jeff McComsey. It's the Red Viper vs The Mountain fight scene that was done from the book, before season 4 of GoT. There's some interesting stuff that I assume was in the book, like Oberyn's line about hunting him through all seven hells. And Tyron puking.

He apparently did another comic called The Tower of Joy, which I think was from Book One. A flashback with Ned, I think. His website is here: http://mccomseycomix.wordpress.com/

This one, http://stroiza.com.br/spoiler-o-julgamento-de-tyrion-lannister-por-combate-em-quadrinhos/, seems to be a work in progress version. While this one, http://mccomseycomix.wordpress.com/2014/06/01/trial-by-combat/, is the final version.

Which I would say in itself is a contradiction even though I live by the same code. If it doesn't matter in the end then why should we bother making things better for everyone? Oh well enough of the philosophical talk getting the thread off topic...haha. It just goes to show you how great of a show Game of Thrones is where it does generate these types of conversations.

That poster is fan made, right? Otherwise why else would it say 3.30? This season started on April 6th.

Yeah I've been trying to wrap my head around that...

And the fact that it's not on any other website.

To live in peace with the people around us, is when we don't care about others that we destroy ourselves collectively.

When push comes to shove, there was only so much the show could do with the Mountain. In the books he's a once-in-a-generation (if that) complete monster and genetic freak. It's a fantasy story, so he could be whatever George wanted him to be. In those case, a nearly 8-foot-tall behemoth that moved with a far smaller man's speed and possessed legitimately unreal strength.

We, however, live in the real world. Hard to find a guy like that and get him on camera.

GRRM Clarifies Publishing Plans

That's nice... but less talky, more writey, George. :o

Right? I love the guy for giving us GOT, but he needs to pick up his pace. It's been nearly 20 years since he started this series, more than enough time to finish 8 books.

And as cool as it is that he's doing extras like Dunk and Egg and the History thing...I can't help but go, "how about you tackle those AFTER you finish your series?" There's a reason Tolkein never finished the Simarilion, it's because he was finishing his actually trilogy first. After next season the show will in all likelyhood be caught up with him, so he really needs to get a move on.

And is anyone else completely at a loss for why GRRM keeps pushing the movie idea? I can't imagine a fantasy series that would be less suited to film than GOT. We have over 10 main characters in this beast, there's literally no way a film could do them justice. Heck, even with 10 hours they're still having to cut things. I don't understand how, in the same article, he talks about his regreat that the show doesn't have enough time, and then talks about his excitement for a movie.

I know I sound like I'm really bashing George here, but to clarify, I really am a huge fan of the guy, I just really want him to get the other books out before the show, or before he dies. And I don't want to see GOT butchered in a film.

I just wish they could have gotten the 1st actor who played The Mountain back. I don't know if he was as big, but he just had the right screen presence for the role, imo. Also, the age. This guy seems too young to me.
