He is one of those moronic Southerners who probably thinks the South will rise again. I can't believe they exist... but they do. They fly their little Confederate flags and whatnot and think they're special for being "true" Southerners.

I agree.
Also, alot of ''true'' Southerners don't even know what waving that flag can mean. Some do and know they are racists. :down

On an Individual basis, I have found that Yankees are just as diverse as Southerners. Some Yankees are exceedingly polite, follow basic rules of curtesy, and practice the proper etiquette that should be displayed in mixed company.
Some Southerners are exceedingly rude, highly illcouth, illiterate, and generally ignorant.
This really shows up in your survey. :o

mk two things.

1.) Darthphere was actually making a concerted effort to have an actual conversation with me, which I appreciate, I genuinely would like his opinion on things and an explanation of his viewpoint. I would appreciate it Slip if you would try and hold back on antagonizing me until we are done.
* Let the adults talk now, go play with your toys*

2.) yes, Yankees, Yanks, Northerners, all indicate that you are from up north, but Yankee generally carries with it a negative connotation. Oh and come on down here and talk to some people some time, Yankee is used fairly reguraly.

ok I lied 3 things not two

3.) of course the South won't rise again, don't be an idiot. If we had won, we would both be speaking German right now. Or Japanese, depends on how they split us up after we lost World War II. America as a whole is better than it ever could have been if divided. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate both my heritage as a Southerner and as an American.

I'm kinda wondering right now if everyone on this thread knows what "foot in mouth" disease is?

p.s. Thanks for the support Shadow.

lol "foot in Mouth " disease, yeah happens a lot to people who talk too fast or too much. Like me. lol

As individuals? Nothing in particular.

One time though, a whole bunch of them came down, burned my city to the ground, salted my farm, and killed my friends....

...wait, no, that was Gone with the Wind.

Some Southerners are exceedingly rude, highly illcouth, illiterate, and generally ignorant.

In a general sense though, the majority of Southerners I've met are considerate, relatively well-mannered, honorable, and moral people.
And the majority of Yankees I've found to be slightly offensive, a little pushy, a little arrogant, and as a whole, the type of person I don't particurlalyl want to be around. (And that's saying something because I really love people)

All that being said, one of my best friends is from Pennsylvania. Granted, he's from a farm in Pennsylvania, but that's still pretty far north. My Aunt and Uncle live in New Jersey, and my cousins live in Chicago.

So yes, I have spent considerable time in both the North and the South. I'm not saying that I am uninfluenced by preconceived notions about Yankees, I am well aware of the stigmas my family holds against Yanks, but I feel that as a whole, a great many of them are proven true.

Hmmm fair enough, though as you said, everyone is different. For everyone of those arrogant, pushy offensive yanks, theres a good one. Just like for every one of those considerate, well mannered, honorable southerners, theres a the standard racist redneck sterotype, which most of the time happen to be so vocal that the stereotype sticks.

Ive driven from Chicago to the Gulf Coast of Northern Florida. The South is like 5 years behind and the people remind me of Deliverance.
And there's weird moss on all the trees. :csad:

Let up Holly. He really is just outspoken, but is in fact very tongue-in-cheek with quiet a bit of what he says. Think a Southern Deadpool.

Not even gonna argue with that one, I agree there are more than a couple obnoxious rednecks around. I don't find them terribly offensive, just slightly embarassing, kind of like that one weird cousin no one talks to at the family reunions.

What most Northerners fail to recognize is that amongst those of us who consider ourselves Southerners, the stereotype of an obnoxious, arrogant and ...well heck, most Southerners think of Northeners as about as backwards as ya'll think of us.

Where Northeners would spit out the word "Redneck", we spit "Yankee"
Both are small demographics I'm sure, but one bad apple ruins the batch.

Well I'm glad you made a roadtrip, those are always fun. It's called Spanish moss, just in case you were wondering.

And the way things are moving in the world today, I'd like to hope that we are waaayyy more than 5 years behind the curve. But thank you for the compliment. :)

well with average daily temperatures at over 95 degrees right now, I can pretty much guarantee we are all pretty darn hot.

I read your posts with a Southern accent now.

well is that with a Southern accent or a redneck accent?

'Cause there is actually quite a bit of a difference.

Holly Goodhead said:
There is no difference.

oh wow are you serious?

So theres no difference in the way someone from wisconsin and the way someone from New York talks?

Cause those are both Northern accents, yet I'm relatively confident that the distinction between the two is evident to you.

How can you compare accents from two different locations to an accent from the same exact place? Last time I checked rednecks don't have a special area of the south where they live... you could have a redneck on the same street as you... just because he is a redneck does not mean that he has a different accent than yourself.

After living here for nine years now (in the South...as being a Northern transplate) I'd say the accents vary from place to place. Just like in New York where different boroughs have different accents. Or in Boston where you can tell a Northy from a Southy. We have upstate and lowcountry accents. You can probably trace some link between urbanization and the different accents. Charleston accents tend to be different from people in Greenville, well different from Orangeburg.

Theyre the same to me.

mk have you ever seen Gone with the Wind?

Rhett Butler spoke with a Southern Accent. Oozes Southern charm, a lot of class behind it. Matthew McCaughnehey (Sp?) has a texas accent, but it is strongly Southern.

Redneck is very much the chopped, mangled words and slurred speech so prominent in your aforementioned "Deliverance" it reeks with ignorance, or should I say ignernce, and often trails off into a fit of mumblng and tobacco spit.

So you see there is quite a difference. If you really study them, you can tell if someone is from South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, or wherever. It's all in the pronunciation.

For instance, when people ask me where I'm from, I say Georgia, but it comes across as "Joe-Ja"
The R is all but dropped and the word stretched in order to maintain the same speed of pronunciation even after dropping that center consonant.

* all that being said, I practice an almost nonregional diction form of speaking. The only real traces of an accent I have are present in my pronunciation of my home state and my affinity for the word ya'll. Although it does apparently get thicker when I'm flirting with a cute waitress or other attractive young female...

Right... I understand that, but there is no distinction between a redneck accent and a southern accent, this is because you can find redneck types in any place. There is no one type of redneck accent.

There are not any Rednecks in Charleston, not really. They would tend to live in the upstate more where the education system is more non existent. I mean you might find a Northy in Southy too....but you can usually figure out where they are from from the difference in accent.
