This movie blows. Directed by John Singleton and starring Omar Epps, this movie was about racism in an American collge. I watched it for the first time last night.

Totally ridiculous and unrealistic in it's portrayel of racism. I was quite offended by it as a white man, but I thought it's quite offensive towards black people aswell. EVERYONE is a stereotype in this movie. And it's done without a single hint of satire, it's totally serious. There are very few redeemable characters. In fact, the very small handfull of decent people in this movie have very small parts. One of the first scenes, entirely ludicrous, Omar Epps gets into an elevator with a white woman. The white woman places her hands over her bag protectively. Ludicrous... I know some white people act like this... but usually in dark streets. Not in broad daylight, in a college, on an elavator!

White people are constantly portrayed as cowardly. Like the guy that turns into a nazi. It's obvious he fears a beat down, and so he has to get a gun. Only when he gets a gun does he say what he really feels. And of course, the white guy he points the gun at gets on the floor immediately, but not the brave Omar Epps! Oh no, he a brave black man, and stared down the nazi!!

The campus security are, of course, white and racist. They grab Omar Epps when he tries to chase the gun weilding nazi. For some WEIRD reason, they don't arrest the gun weilding maniac, even though there are two witnesses (white and black) to the event. In a completely stupid scene (END OF MOVIE SPOILERS!!), the nazi ets up a sniper rifle on a roof and starts shooting students. Omar Epps runs into the building and starts kicking his ass, then the police come in... and what do the police do?? They grab Omar Epps and let the gun man run off!!!

I know there is racism in America, but this is completey stupid and unrealistic.

Ice Cube's character is ignorant, a bully, and a big jerk that never goes to class. But for some reason, he seems to be portrayed as a wise man that knows it all.

When a white woman gets raped, and her black friend talks to the white perpetrator on the phone, the black friend gets highly offended when the guy calls her the N word or something. The two women go off to the black group of men, and they go to give the man a beat down. But the black people seem far more concerned with the fact that this white man insulted one of their kind rather than the fact he RAPED a white woman. Then the white woman becomes a man hating feminest lesbian. This film is filled to the brim with clihes and stereotypes.

Stupid stupid stupid.

Interesting perspective. And one I dont entirely disagree with.

I personally thought Higher Learning was ok. It certainly wasnt anything to write home about, but it was decent at best...

Honestly, the reason I even watched this movie was because I heard Jennifer Connelly was in it. Unfortunately her role in this is fairly short, but I'll give anything with Jennifer Connelly a look atleast once.

she get naked?

Sorta.

Her and whatshername (the original Buffy) have something of a lesbian fling. But it's intercut with a dude taking the place of Connelly. It's ok, but it's nothing like "The Hot Spot" naked.

well thats why we have the fast forward button.

Unfortunately in this case, you would pretty much fast forward thru Connelly's lesbian scene. It's intercut in a way that it flows together. Like Connelly disappears out of view, and there pops up the guy. He ducks out of view, and out pops up Connelly. Kind of hard to explain....

The movie did suck but I understand the messege and some white people do act like that in broad daylight, welcome to America.
I was walking on the Appalachian trail,my white male friend had gone ahead of me and I was crossing paths with a another white male who clearly was reaching for his pocket in anticipation of possible trouble from me,a little black women in the woods :(

I was dressed as Storm, for Hallloween silly :p,and I swear this guy crossed the street to avoid me.:(

I still wish Pac played the lead in this movie. Epps did well though. I thought it was an ok flick not memorable.

I didn't think it was horrible. It had some good points but I agree that it was a overly simplistic way of viewing college cliques, even racial ones. Racism exists on campuses to be sure but this movie had a dynamic of "what if intergration happened in the 1920s" kind of feel. Does that make sense?

It was ok, but I have seen the subject of racism dealt with so much better in various other films. The onyl reason I actually sat down and watched it was because Jennifer Connelly was in it and she was hardly in it at all. It was passable but nothing out of the ordinary.

Not to be blunt, but I think a lot of black people(some, not all) give it a pass because it's a movie talking about the stuff we talk about and do go through. Yes, contrary to popular belief, there is racism in the world. It wasn't the best movie, but it was something I was intrigued by, as no one had really talked about racism in college on that level before, exaggerated or not.

Not to disbelief you, but how do you know he wasn't reaching into his pocket for gum or his cell phone? What else would he be getting? A gun or knife? Unlikely. And then you say someone crossed the street? People do that for all kinds of reasons.

Yes, there is racism...from all races. But I believe racism can easily -- and probably frequently -- be mistaken for just plain rudeness inherent to all humans regardless of race.

Take for example at work. I may be helping customers all day, haven't eaten, and am tired. I may not be especially enthusiastic or excited at that point. I help a white woman and it's obvious I am not having a good day at work. She may be displeased and complain to a manager. Now I help a black woman and its the same thing except she accuses me of racism. But if that's the case, I must be racist against the whites despite the fact that I am white.

What she misconstrues for racism was nothing more than every day human nature.

As far as the woman tightening her grip on her purse, I am sure that that is nearly automatic, just someone who is being more cautious around a stranger regardless of their race.

John Singleton havent made a good movie since Boyz in the hood.

LOL, it's best to not attempt to explain it. They never get it, no offense.

I thought Four Brothers was alright.

I also liked Singleton's Shaft movie, but I think alot of that is because of Christian Bale's rich prick character was entertaining I thought.

"They"?? Maybe its you that isn't getting it, no offense of course.

Why would an adult male be afraid of, as Tzarinna put it, a "little black woman in the woods"? Why is there this idea that whites have this inherent fear of blacks?

Thats exactly what someone said on an episode of VH1's "I love the 90's".
Suffice to say, I dont partcularly agree with the statement. But to each their own.
