I mean, it tripled it's budget domestically, set box office records for the time, and here were are 12 years later with no sequel. It is like, the only time in Hollywood history that a studio has not milked a successful franchise for all it is worth.

And I am glad, a sequel would ruin it.

I guess it is for the best. The aliens destroyed every major city on Earth in the first one. How do you top that? The aliens blow up the moon? I mean, there really isn't much to do from a story perspective. Aliens come and blow up the ruins of New York and Washington! Yeah...just wouldn't work.

Independence Day really wasn't as good as it should have been. I enjoyed it but also thought it was a bit **** at the same time. From memory it had similar hype to Jurassic Park & Terminator 2 (films where I don't have the same kind of reservations) from the same era but IMO doesn't stand up as well to time. Also the concept wouldn't have been as interesting or original 2nd time around.

Saying that, I'm sure they could have made a sequel which would have made money, maybe only half as much though, and with a similar budget, overall a riskier project.

I would be interested in a remake now though, rather than a sequel.

I heard of one idea where the aliens return and all the humans that banded together separate for some reason(over some problem or issue) The aliens take advantage of this moment

You make a good point because it was an enormous success. But, other points were made too to the contrary. What's the point of a sequel? Money yes, but the story is over. They would have to come up with a great story that maintains the spirit of the first. But, the aliens are beaten, what more can they do? If they stray too far from the original concept, they risk a sequel that is nothing like the original. Most sequels maintain a linear path from the original. A sequel would be nothing like the first. Studios want a sequel that is like the first but a bit ramped up. Not a completely different movie and story.

Personally I hated the movie so I 'm just glad I never had to see the hype for a sequel.

They could of made a sequel within the first couple of years. I know the idea was floated around for some time . It would of worked in that time frame but now it's too late. The special effects looked awesome then but now seem dated.

What do they need a Sequel For they stoped the Alien Menace. No Sequel needed.

Also don't say its to late for a Sequel just look at Rocky 6 and Rambo 4.

I would never bet on an intergalactic planet-raping operation to not have back up. It could have just taken the reinforcements years of space travel to get back to Earth.

A script was written...

http://movies.ign.com/articles/672/672690p1.html

We finished the script, and we looked at it, ... we said, 'Yeah, it's good, but is it right?' …And so we actually gave the money back to 20th Century Fox that they paid us to write it. We said, 'Look, we can't take the money, because we don't want to do it.' And we explained our thinking on it, and, I got to say, to their credit, they agreed with us. And so they didn't move forward with the sequel with someone else. Now, I don't know if that'll hold down the line, but at least today they agree with us: that it was never intended to have a sequel, and if we did it, it would just be for the money, and that's not the right reason to do a sequel."

The decision seems clear and final: no more Independence Day films.

This was back in 2005.

"Independence Day" works much better as a one-shot movie.

Alien vs. Predator vs. ID. Anyone?

The only way I could see a sequel working is if the humans, using the technology from the downed alien ships, decided to take the fight to the aliens, on there homeworld. But, it's been too long, and will probably never happen. I think the way it ended was fine too, and it doesnt really need a sequel.

I think this film has sort of been forgotten . I don't think it has the level of popularity needed .

careful ! pointing out stuff that is fairly obvious but taken in as insult might get your post deleted around these parts...

i made this in photoshop last year. :woot:

I really liked it when it came out, but haven't watched it in years. I've kinda been wanting to go back and give it another go 'round recently. Storyline, I see no reason for a sequel, but I also find it odd that they didn't try to capitalize on the success of the first one with a sequel or cartoon series or something crazy.

"-and if we did it, it would just be for the money, and that's not the right reason to do a sequel."

If only more people in Hollywood thought this way.:(

Most of the alien ships were largely intact, looking at those last few scenes. The sequel could have picked up immediatly after - only this time, it's a ground war. Would have been sweet to see alien shock troops frying the minds of marines and stuff in a street-to-street fight.

But yeah...better off left alone.

Universal never did a sequel to E.T.
