How I Met Your Father - CBS Eyeing HIMYM Spinoff

What I really like about what I've read here is that, while the characters sound like they somewhat fill the basic group roles of the HIMYM cast (Sally = Ted, Juliet = Barney, Danny/Todd = Marshall/Lily, Frank probably = Robin), they don't just sound like carbon copies of the last cast. And I don't think it should be, if you've got a female lead. When HIMYM started, the creators said that it was like the reverse or anti-Sex and the City in regards to the expectations of the lead character. Where SATC had a female character who was more interested in sex than a relationship, HIMYM had a male character who was a romantic and wanted to find the one and settle down. So having a story about a girl coming out of a short failed marriage, following the story of a guy who would tell a girl he loves after they've had only one date, seems like a good choice to me.

Now it's just up to the casting. Gotta nail that chemistry like they did the first time.

Just had a casting idea. Michelle Trachtenberg for Juliet. They need someone from Buffy again. It's a good luck charm.

Greta Gerwig To Topline CBS’ ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Spinoff
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Indie darling Greta Gerwig will lead the cast of How I Met Your Dad, CBS’ spinoff from long-running comedy series How I Met Your Mother. With Gerwig on board, the project, which had a pilot production commitment, has been given a formal pilot green light, with 20th Century Fox TV, which is behind the original series, producing. In addition to starring, Gerwig, who has co-written several features, will serve as a producer on HIMYD and is expected to write. Her deal comes after a lengthy courtship, with the excitement among TV casting executives about the prospect of her doing a series comparable to that when another indie princess, Zooey Deschanel, agreed to do a pilot three years ago with New Girl (also at 20th TV). Getting Gerwig to do HIMYD was considered so important, the studio is willing to move production of the series to New York for her after the pilot, which will be shot in Los Angeles. Written/exec produced by Emily Spivey and How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, How I Met Your Dad is described as kindred spirit of HIMYM, telling the story from a female point of view. That female point of view comes from Sally (Gerwig), a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life. After breaking up with her husband of less than a year, Sally finds a solid circle of support in her friends and family. HIMYM’s Pam Fryman is directing.

Gerwig first got noticed with the breakout role in the 2010 feature Greenberg. She has been making noise with her starring role in the feature Frances Ha — which she also co-wrote — earning a Golden Globe nomination. Gerwig, repped by UTA and Management 360, just wrapped The Humbling opposite Al Pacino and is set to star opposite Julianne Moore in Rebecca Miller’s Maggie’s Plan.
Oh wow...

Considering she wrote and starred in her own indie film, she does sort of seem like a female Josh Radnor.

I have no excitement or interest in HIMYM anymore, I just can't leave now before it ends, but it probably should have ended a few season ago haha. This season has been a pain. I'll give this spinoff a chance but I doubt it gets me wrapped in.

Wow! Adore Greta, I'm haven't watch the series for a couple of years but with this casting they've got me hook, line, sinker to the spin-off.

No idea who she is, and if someone has posted a picture, it's not showing.

I'll check out the series, but I don't know if I can sit through another long-winded story taking 9 years to reveal major plot details.

Drew Tarver Lands A Lead In ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Spinoff
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: From obscurity to a lead of one of the hottest pilots — that has been the trajectory for young actor Drew Tarver over the past month. Exactly a month ago, young Upright Citizens Brigade member Drew Tarver performed at CBS’ 9th annual Diversity Showcase as a LGBT participant. The network signed him in a talent holding deal, and he has now been cast as one of the leads of How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad. In the vein of the original series, HIMYD tells the story from a female point of view, that of Sally (Greta Gerwig), and revolves around a new group of friends in New York. Tarver will play Todd, Sally’s best friend and roommate from college who is now married to her brother.

Paradigm-repped Tarver has trained at UCB, The Groundlings, Westside Comedy Theatre and Acme Theater in New York. He has guest starred on Animal Practice and Newsreaders and has created and starred in several Funny or Die videos, including the web series Get Up. To date, 309 actors have appeared in the CBS Diversity Talent Showcases, leading to 1813 auditions and 494 roles booked. Last year’s participants included John Milhiser, who signed a talent holding deal with CBS before landing a spot on SNL.

NEWS/ Greta Gerwig Spills How I Met Your Dad Scoop: "It Shares the Heart and Soul With the Original Show"
by LEANNE AGUILERA

We're going to be honest. When were first learned that there was a How I Met Your Mother spin-off in the works, we were a little skeptical and unsure. Upon hearing the news, we may have unleashed our own "You're dead to me look" to everyone in the room. However, after chatting with Greta Gerwig, the new lead of How I Met Your Dad, we're pleasantly surprised and genuinely excited to see if this sure-to-be legendary pilot will make it to our TV screens.

This is mostly due to the fact that Gerwig is taking her role as the "New Ted Mosby" as seriously as any HIMYM fan would hope. "I'm terrified," the star revealed exclusively to E! News at the Vanity Fair Oscars party.

Despite her fears, the critically acclaimed writer and actress says she already has the support of the HIMYM cast. "They're so nice! I went and I hung out with all the cast and they were like, 'If you can be part of this world, it's crazy fun,'" she gushed. "They told me they believed in me, and it was really sweet." Well, if she's got Lily's (Alyson Hannigan) approval, then you know she must be the perfect fit!

The Frances Ha actress will take on the role of Sally, a sweet yet free-spirited girl in her late-20s who has never really embraced the notion of growing up. However, unlike Ted (Josh Radnor), Sally is already married when we first meet her in the pilot.

In addition to starring in the series, Gerwig will also be taking on a major behind-the-scenes role as a writer and executive producer alongside co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. "I contributed a lot into the pilot, and I'll be in the writers room staring June 1 if they pick it up," she said. "I shoot the pilot in like two weeks and then hopefully it becomes a real show."

Luckily, Gerwig is not jumping into this new experience as a complete HIMYM novice. Fans should be pleased to know that the 30-year-old actress has been right there with viewers through all of the slaptastic shenanigans. "I've been a fan of this show since really early on," she promised. "I've seen every episode."

So what can fans expect if (and hopefully when) they get to tune into the How I Met Your Dad pilot? Gerwig assured us that the spinoff will honor our McLaren's Pub-loving flagship in each and every way. "It's funny. It shares the heart and soul with the original show, so it has the sweetness and the funniness," she said. Woo hoo! A glass of Glen McKenna for everyone!

Take a look at our full interview with the How I Met Your Dad star above to find out if Neil Patrick Harris could be making a brotastic cameo in the pilot.

Krysta Rodriguez Lands A Lead In CBS’ ‘HIMYM’ Spinoff ‘How I Met Your Dad’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Actress-singer Krysta Rodriguez (Smash) has landed one of the leads alongside Greta Gerwig and Drew Tarver in CBS’s How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad. In the vein of the original series, HIMYD tells the story from a female point of view, that of Sally (Gerwig), and revolves around a new group of friends in New York. Rodriguez plays Sally’s best friend Juliet, a sexy, flamboyant force of nature who runs the most successful fashion blog in the country. The pilot, from 20th TV, was written by Emily Spivey and HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and will be directed by Pam Fryman.

Greta Gerwig? Yeah, I might have to watch this.

Just had a casting idea. Michelle Trachtenberg for Juliet. They need someone from Buffy again. It's a good luck charm.

Ugh no, I can't stand that girl. Went to school with her for a year, she was a ***** then and I have no doubt she hasn't changed much.

How I Met Your Dad Exclusive: Workaholics' Anders Holm Joins HIMYM Spin-Off in Key Role

Anders Holm is the dad!

Well, he could’ve been the dad.

The Workaholics vet and Mindy Project alum is joining CBS’ How I Met Your Mother offshoot pilot, How I Met Your Dad in the recurring role of Gavin, the (soon-to-be-ex) husband of Greta Gerwig’s soulmate-searching Sally, TVLine has learned exclusively.

HIMYD is described as a “kindred spirit” of HIMYM — only this time telling the story of a relationship from the point of view of Sally, a “female Peter Pan” who is thinking of calling it quits with her hubby of a year, Gavin.

The cast also includes Smash‘s Krysta Rodriguez and relative newcomer Drew Tarver.

Nick D’Agosto & Andrew Santino To Star In CBS’ ‘HIMYM’ Spinoff ‘How I Met Your Dad’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Nick D’Agosto and Mixology‘s Andrew Santino have been cast as leads alongside Greta Gerwig, Drew Tarver and Krysta Rodriguez in CBS’s comedy pilot How I Met Your Dad, rounding out the How I Met Your Mother spinoff’s primary cast. In the vein of the original series, HIMYD tells the story from a female point of view, that of Sally (Gerwig), and revolves around a new group of friends in New York. D’Agosto, repped by UTA, Emerald Talent and SMGSB, will play Frank, the head of IT for Juliet’s (Rodriguez) fashion blog who falls for Sally. Santino will play Danny, Sally’s older brother, a perfect but uptight over achieving lawyer. Santino is billed as a guest star in the pilot as his casting is in second position to ABC’s midseason comedy Mixology, which has been soft in its first couple of airings. The pilot, from 20th TV, was written by Emily Spivey and HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and will be directed by Pam Fryman.

I still have my reservations about the show. The chemistry of the cast of HIMYM was unique and will be hard to duplicate.

If this show is not on during one of the other shows that I watch. Then I will check it out & give it a fair chance. But if it is then I wont be going out of my way to watch it. Im just not that excited for this one

By NELLIE ANDREEVA

CBS’s How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad is making a casting change. Actress-singer Krysta Rodriguez, who was to play one of the leads, is departing the hybrid pilot. In the vein of the original series, HIMYD tells the story from a female point of view, that of Sally (Greta Gerwig), and revolves around a new group of friends in New York. Rodriguez was to play Sally’s best friend Juliet, a sexy, flamboyant force of nature who runs the most successful fashion blog in the country. The character has undergone changes after the table read. How I Met Your Dad‘s three male leads are played by Drew Tarver, Nick D’Agosto and Andrew Santino. The pilot, from 20th TV, was written by Emily Spivey and HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Rob Greenberg is directing.
Curious to see how quickly they fill that role.

Well, there goes my reason to watch. :o

Tiya Sircar Lands Vacant Lead Role In CBS’ ‘How I Met Your Dad’ Pilot
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Tiya Sircar has been cast as one of the leads in CBS’ How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad, replacing Krysta Rodriguez. In the vein of the original series, HIMYD tells the story from a female point of view, that of Sally (Greta Gerwig), and revolves around a new group of friends in New York. Sircar will play Juliet, Sally’s sexy and flamboyant best friend. The recasting, done after the pilot’s table read, was accompanied by some tweaking of the character, including giving Juliet a new workplace. Sircar, repped by TalentWorks and Elevate Entertainment, was on CBS and 20th TV’s radar as she just wrapped an arc on the network and the studio’s freshman comedy series The Crazy Ones, playing Sarah Michelle Gellar’s assistant and Hamish Linklater’s love interest. She also had a lead role in last summer’s feature comedy The Internship, did arcs on Lifetime’s The Witches Of East End and Amazon’s Betas, plays new character Sabine on LucasFilm/Disney animated series Rebels and is the lead in indie comedy Miss India America.

How I Met Your Dad‘s three male leads opposite Gerwig and Sircar are played by Drew Tarver, Nick D’Agosto and Andrew Santino. The pilot, from 20th TV, was written by Emily Spivey and HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Rob Greenberg is directing.
