Guardians of the Galaxy I Am Groot

Still not as detailed as that one statue.

I think baby Groot will steal the movie lol.

Which is why I wondered whether he will end up becoming the default Groot instead of adult Groot. Wouldn't Marvel simply go with what is most popular? If he becomes the breakout star of GOTG2, why would they go back to adult Groot just because that's who is in the comics and was in the first movie?

It would be like Marvel going with the original GOTG team consisting of Vance Astro, Starhawk, Charlie 27, Martinex, Nikki and Yondu. They went with what was more popular instead.

I could mo agree more but the good thing with Groot is we can have both adult and baby Groot. I'm certain we will see adult Groot again.

I don't know if there should be a separate thread or poll for this, but who do you think the audience are going to love more in this movie? Rocket Raccoon or Baby Groot? Who will be the bigger hit?

My daughter was in love with baby Groot at the end of the last movie. Bought her one of those dancing Baby Groot's for X-mas last year and LOVED it lol

You know, you almost can't have the same humor with out having them together. It's like, which was funnier Abbott or Costello when they were a team

What I still don't understand is we're supposed to believe there's universal translators always in use right? Why isn't Groot's race among the translated if Rocket can understand him?

But I think people can still have a preference for one or the other. It's like how C3PO and R2D2 are always together, but fans will usually prefer one to the other if really put on the spot. I think Groot is probably more like R2D2, especially in this film now that he's small and cute (instead of tall and skinny like C3PO in GOTG1), because he doesn't say much but is understood by his buddy. Rocket is more like C3PO, who is more verbose and has something to say.

It's probably one of these things they overlook so that they can always have him only saying "I am Groot".

I guess, still happens in the comics too. lol I can see the R2 reference to a point because even the humanoids could understand R2 and Chewy when we couldn't lol I DO love the interactions tho, always have, like:

Groot: "I am Groot!"
Rocket: "yeah she is very shapely!"

...kind of thing has happened and was one of the funnier things lol

I didn't like Groot in the first movie tbh and f**kin' loved Rocket in it but I think Baby Groot will steal everyone's thunder in GotG Vol 2.

I think of it like the Star Trek TNG episode "Darmok," where the translator doesn't work because the other being's form of communication is fundamentally so different in its basic structure from any other language. In the Star Trek case, it came down to a simple matter of the aliens having a mythology that we did not understand, but in the Groot case, it's because he's a sapient tree.

A better analogy is presented by Terry Pratchett describing dragons in the novel "Guards! Guards!". He wrote that humans can never understand dragon behaviour because they have "intelligence that has nothing to do with human beings." That's what I think about with Groot, he is so alien that mere translation does not work.

Another analogy is the xenomorphs from the Alien franchise. They are clearly intelligent, maybe even moreso than humans. But how much do you want to bet that a universal translator would work with them, if it existed in that fictional universe? Not likely, because their intelligence and means of communication is so different from what we recognize.

That sounds like a plausible explanation.

I can see the another that the most humanoids evolved past a certain communication skill. :D I swear Mantis could talk to plants at one point. I might be remembering wrong tho

I agree that this current version of Mantis probably thinks she can talk to plants. Whether that will stand up to objective scrutiny is another matter. :D

Rebellious teen Groot :hehe:. I wonder if he'll be a teen the next time we see him or will he have grown into an adult.

Baby Groot himself was so cute. I loved how everyone was so worried about him. Rocking making him spit out that fly thingie :funny:.

"It's too adorable to kill!" :funny:

I feel like if I was told the amount of money Vin Diesel got for the role in this movie where he only has to say the catchphrase maybe like 16 times and do some yelling, I'd probably get very angry, lol.

I felt like we were given just enough Baby Groot. He was not annoying and overbearing.

Anyone know if Vin did that dance scene in mo cap?

Gotta give Gunn a lot of credit for Baby Groot. It would've been really easy to use that character a crutch and try to turn him into this franchise's very own, super-marketable version of the Minions and just bash him over our head til the point that he becomes off-putting. But Gunn does what so few Hollywood, big franchise directors know how to do...hell, what very few Marvel directors have been able to do...he shows some moderation. As a result, Baby Groot is perfect. Not so little that the audience is left wanting or constantly wondering "when is Groot coming back" and not so much that he gets annoying. Gunn handled the character perfectly.
