I found a blog post about OHD - obsessive hobby disorder.

It's like I wrote it myself. My obsessions are always about comics, anime, movies and video games. To the point where I had to quit (Video games) recently to get a grip.

One comment really hit the nail on the head for me:

It is a mental escape from reality- just like sports or gambling and shopping. The promise of happiness is just around the corner. And the real payoff is the distraction from your real life that you unhappy with.
It is a distraction and escape from a generalized feeling of anxiety (and probably ineffectiveness and power over your life) that you very well may have been carrying around since you grew up in a dysfunctional household.

For me it wasn't a dysfunctional household but just that life has dealt me a bad hand.

I think my hubby's hobby is "projects".

We have car parts scattered all over the front room for 6 months - the project: to reline the interior of his van.

We have tools scattered all over my kitchen for 2 months - the project: to build a wooden gazebo to replace the cheap ass metal one that would collapse under Canadian snow.

We have tools scattered all over my dining room and a folding staircase under the dining room table for over 1 year - the project: Install folding staircase in garage (I'm not even sure what the rest of the tools are for).

We have tools scattered all over the laundry room, main work area and work out room in the basement for ... no idea it's been too long ... - the project: Put away the tools from past projects.

Well as long as they aren't negatively impacting your life is say they are a good thing. Almost anything can be considered an "escape from reality". I'm always obsessing and constantly playing with music. It's always going through my head as well. I guess it really depends on if you let it consume and run your life

To relax you turn your back on stress, I guess it is kind of an escape from reality
But one can still make it useful for others
