Fant4stic I think this deserves its own thread...Josh Trank denounces Fantastic Four

LOL, seriously? I don't buy that for a second. I don't believe for a second that without the tweet the film makes $37 million and beats MI5 this weekend.

I don't buy it either. We would have to assume that there are enough members of the GA who even know or care the guy exists, let alone follow his twitter. Those RT scores tanked the film, not Trank's tweets.

My fear is that there will be fans who will believe that Trank is some sort of hero Battling Fox over a superior secret cut that the big bad studio kept from the public .

Fox's distribution chief says they have no plans to let go of the characters. He hinted they will force them into an X-Men movie as supporting characters.

I'm confident that was meant to save face.

I'm not surprised Fox would be trying to save face. Sony said the same thing after ASM 2. They claimed that they were moving full steam ahead and announced other Spiderman related projects. Behind the scenes there was all kinds of turmoil. I tend to think that's what's happening at Fox as we speak.

As for Trank , while he may not face the ire from fans that Schumacer faced after B&R, I think he pretty much has hurt his rep in Hollywood ,for a while at least.

They cannot retain rights by using them as supporting characters in X Men. NO WAY.

I hear the movie was less than stellar. 9% on rotten tomatoes?

Yup, just like how Sony planned their Sinister Six movie and their Aunt May movie after TASM2 ... :)

We'll see how firm Fox will stand by these statements soon enough.

I haven't seen the film, but judging from everything I've heard, a director's cut would be vastly superior to the version we got. Would it have been a good superhero movie? Probably not, but I have no doubt that it would have been a better, more coherent film.

I hope it's either that or a message to Marvel " We won't let the rights revert in 7 years for nothing, so please contact us, I'm sure that we may find an agreement... "

Any other option will only be bad news.... for Fox (I dare them to play the fully loaded gun russian roulette challenge by playing ball not with Marvel but with the fans / audience ! Yes Fox, please, loose money. No one here has any problem with that)

I'm almost certain Fox would need Disney/Marvel approval before crossing over X-Men and FF, and that ain't happening.

“Presuming his directing contract contains the standard terms requiring him to provide professional performance of services, as well as requiring any statements about publicity to be cleared by the studio and refrain from rendering any derogatory remarks, Trank probably breached his contract,” Pierce said.

Losing a job to direct Star Wars....5 million dollars

Getting sued by Fox over breach of contract.....2 million dollars

Burning Every bridge in Hollywood for a 20 minute twitter message......Priceless

Yeah, I wouldn't want to be Trank right now .

If he gets sued, he mine as well just let it all out.... You know, to at least give us entertainment because he obviously couldn't do that using Fantastic Four characters... He would finally be doing his job of entertaining movie fans.

1.
the act of speaking out against one's work at the moment said work is premiered.
If I could speak trankly, the studio messed with my vision. I had an awesome version of this film, but nobody will ever see it.

Yeah, I remember back when TASM2 didn't do great and they said that.

It'd be very stubborn for FOX to keep the F4, what with both the critics and audience not caring for it.

May as well cut their losses and focus on that X-Men TV series and Gambit.

Director's Cut would have required those scenes to have been filmed. Who knows if that happened. I wouldn't mind seeing some of the earlier scripts, though.

It seems like everything that could go wrong with this movie...happened.
When you read around the web, Trank doesnt seem to be a guy who you can work with easy.

He seems to have been quite a hard man to work with on this project...but so do the people from FOX.

Pushing the blame to others is a low move from Trank, he is as much at fault as Fox and everybody involved.

Difference is, Sony was/is in economic turmoil. Fox isn't and this movie won't put them there.

Yes they can.

Actually, I doubt they would. Fox has the film rights to the Fantastic Four. How they choose to use them is irrelevant, provided they use them.

By that reasoning they could put them in Prometheus 2.

Correct. Without reading the specific language of the contract, it is impossible to say for certain. But it is very unlikely that there is a clause in the contractual language that prohibits crossovers (especially since crossover films are a new thing that wasn't even really conceived in Hollywood until about 10 years ago). Rather, the contract probably just gives Fox general rights to use the characters in cinematic films. A court will enforce a contract as it is written. So, if its not prohibited, Fox can do it.

Now if they were using the characters in Prometheus or some other ridiculous scenario that makes no sense, Marvel/Disney could probably claim tortious interference with a business interest and allege that Fox is intentionally (key word) hurting their brand by devaluing their characters (and that would still be incredibly hard to prove due to it having to be intentional). Therefore, Marvel/Disney could probably get an injunction prohibiting that. But crossing the characters into X-Men makes perfect sense. If anything, it promotes Marvel's brand. Marvel has already done it with several of the IPs they own. They wouldn't have a leg to stand on in such an argument.
