Iceman out of the closet. Pretty cold by Marvel or needed?

I'm blaming Firestar. Iceman had the hots for her in Spiderman and his Amazing Friends. Angel gave him the cold shoulder.

Humor aside, was this really necessary?

It's not like Iceman is closely tied to romantically to any woman.

Iceman isn't gay. He told me he has concubine of women ready to do whatever he pleases.

not made in the right place either. if anything, it should be in the marvel comics section

I can agree with this, though I can see why OP posted it here, considering that Iceman is a major X-Men character who's sexuality has been changed and it could be seen as more mainstream news.

it was posted here to receive more attention, but there is a forum designated for a topic like this. i don't care that much but i'm just saying how I feel

i guess whatever, maybe I mean I want these type of stories to not matter, it really shouldn't.

I don't know why you're sounding like I disagreed with you. I said I do agree with you.

The explanation the writer gave sounded like a huge stretch.

Iceman from the past has a conversation with Jean Grey in which he tells her hes gay and is surprised his older self is in the closet or something. Really weird.

I always think it's stupid to mess around with continuity like that. I mean the guy was straight for like 50 years or something. It's a little late to try and change things around that way.

I can see why they went with Iceman. In the comics I can't think of any serious relationships he was in (though my knowledge of his history is limited) and in the first X-Men movie it was heavily implied he was gay although it was all contexted as his being a mutant, switch the "mutant" for "gay" and you've got the same story.

The scene with Wolverine in the kitchen, the way his mother says "can't you just stop being a mutant," etc all were fairly obvious allegories for being homosexual.

Was it necessary? I think it was although obviously it is going to rub some people the wrong way, it also was not nearly as heavy handed or clumsy as some previous "outings" have been. Creating a new hero who happens to be gay is not a solution because it looks even more like pandering than retroactively altering a superhero's past, which is incidently so common I don't think I need to list the examples of it to make my point.

He was in the closet/denying it to himself/etc. Boom. Next question.

So Bendis took that Family Guy cutaway seriously....

Not just Family Guy.

So here's the original X-Men painted by Alex Ross for the 'Marvels' limited series from 1994. Scott's left hand casts a shadow over Jean's crotch, foreshadowing their sexual relationship, right?

Well…. where is Scott's right hand casting a shadow….? :sly:

You can thank me later for blowing your mind. :mnm:

I think it's bad writing. True progress comes from LGBT characters that are established that way all along, not ret conning straight characters into being gay to meet some quota. It's cheap pandering.

Thank you for saying it better than I could.

Except new characters are notoriously hard to establish in a community where people a) already have their favourites b) despise change.

Iceman guarantees a gay character that sticks around since he is pretty much A list. Unfortunately Wiccan, Hulkling, Shatterstar, Rictor, Northstar, and Anole are generally in and out of limbo.

This is true.

Has anyone asked Iceman? Maybe he could shed some light on this. :o
