Has anyone thought of this? I'm sure you guys have...

It just bothers me, not so much as a gaping plot hole, but more of an annoyance...

I mean you've seen the clip where he literally breaks the bridge apart and moves it across San Francisco bay (think of how much energy this actually entails - it's really God like power). So why does he care about Jean? This is really Phoenix stuff. I don't think Magneto was ever that powerful in the comics, until he used that 'kick' drug in the 'Planet X' storyline and tore New York to pieces.

Why isn't Jean the one moving the bridge?

the whole thing just seems senseless to me. Why would he even be scared of Jean if he's that powerful? If he can lift a bridge that weighs hundreds of tonnes, why would he care?

Maybe I need to see the movie... maybe there's some unspoken kind of tension where the information is conveyed....

What do you think?

because ratner favorite character in the movies is magneto..as far as i can tell magneto got alot of action in this movie....he deserves it..

She could kill him instantly for fun. Hes afraid of her and what she could do to him if she was against him. Would you rather have Phoenix on your side... Or have her demolecularize you? Hmm?

yeah I guess... it's better to have her on your side... but in terms of the mechanics of the movie... and the fact that Magneto seems to be just as powerful as her... it's just a little strange...

Jean's power as Phoenix (even in X3 not just in the comics) is on a whole new level compared to Mags. She could do the Golden Gate Bridge trick in her sleep.

Magneto power over metal

Phoenix power over everything

hmmmmmm, I wonder who is stronger.

Jean will be Magneto's wild card. She can make planets explode with a blink of an eye, for Christ's sake. At young age, she could levitated every single car in her street.

Just because she didnt do it doesnt mean she couldnt do it. She could destroy the sun. Could magneto even lift a plastic lawn chair? :D

Magneto is nowhere near as powerful as her. That is just ridiculous.

Not only in her sleep, but in her sleep when she was 10 years old.

I dont think Jean works for Magneto in the movie so he cant make her do it. I dont know what her agenda is with Magneto.

According to Famke's interview at the MTV website, she said that she "joined" the Brotherhood out of confusion. Because she doesn't have any place to go back to.

"The next stage in evolution" clip shows Mags admitting how much more powerful Jean is than him. She also shows that she doesn't always do as he says.

I would think Magneto wants Jean just as a slap in the face to Professor X...he doesn't really need her but shes powerful anyway..if she confused enough to join I'd take her if I was Magneto.

good point... but I don't think the writers really went that deep... did they?
I can just kind of see him giving a nood to her as hes doing it and Jean not really caring.

Xavier was dead by the time she joined Magneto anyway. In Famke's interview she clearly states that Phoenix joined the brotherhood because she is disoriented and has no place to go. She is lonely and cant return to the X-Mansion because she has killed Cyclops and Xavier and they would all hate her. :(

In Janssen's interview over at MTV Overdrive she states that Jean is with the Brotherhood, not necessarily because she wants to be with them (or that she was persuaded to be with them), but that she really has no other place to go--and is just there . . . which is why you see her always standing off to the side, rather than side-by-side with Magneto. She is simpy there because she is confused and really feels she has no other place to go--not because Magneto is specifically using her for anything.

Regardless of Jean's motivations, I see the thread maker's point. If Magneto is so powerful, why even bother with Jean? Why even bother with anyone else for that matter, since he seems so easily capable of solving matters on his own (he certainly has the power to do it). Even though Magneto is powerful enough on his own, he is still power-hungry, and although it may be risky, why not go the extra mile and harbor the most powerful mutant in the world among your Brotherhood?

So could Phoenix. ANYTHING Magneto can do, Phoenix can do faster, and more effectively.

That's the best answer I believe.

VERY well stated. Bravo. :)

Remember in X1, his machine almost killed him in the process b/c it was draining too much of his power. By the time he's finished with ripping the GGB apart and levitating the cars to rain them upon the X-Men and the military, he'll be exhausted.

Like I said...Jean is his wild card. Or maybe he just feels comfortable knowing that an Omega mutant is by his side.

I was just gonna say the exact same thing...but as u see here...Mine is kinda sucky. :p

uh...she talks about Phoenix and how Jean Grey is very different... there's a struggle going on and she's hardly Jean Grey and she's hardly Phoenix- this very extremely powerful creature...and theres a conflict going on between the two...of which whom is gonna overpower the other... uh..complicated for me to type out but Famke says it well more than I can type out what she says. uh im typing this out ... lol so stay with me. She says that Professor X is trying to control her for his own reasons and theres magneto who's trying to control her for his own cause... um...she says by joining the brotherhood when the Phoenix takes over, is not purely by choice but mostly out of confusion and not having a place to go back to. Magneto tries to control her in moments but she doesn't let him CONTROL her since she has her own motivations. Famke also says, Jean/Phoenix is rage and passion and she has a lot of emotions bottled into something but with all without any control. She also says that the Phoenix stands for and that she's a very powerful mutant but can't control her powers and so she is extremely powerful if you think about that. She says of Jean Grey that she is very different obviously and that she has the "Control" of her powers which the Phoenix lacks.

basically, I tried rewording what Famke said...and putting it together by ear :p It was so damn hard:(
