Exclusive: Nolan's Dark Knight Revelations
Helmer also talks The Prisoner.
by
October 3, 2006 - IGN attended "An Evening With Christopher Nolan" on Oct. 2 at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, where Nolan's first feature, Following, was screened along with the trailer for the filmmaker's next release, The Prestige.

Nolan and his wife-producer Emma Thomas were in attendance for a Q&A session after the film. The director's brother Jonah Nolan, who is scripting The Dark Knight, was also there but he did not take questions from the audience.

IGN got the chance to ask Chris Nolan if The Dark Knight would delve further into the themes established in Batman Begins, specifically the idea of justice vs. revenge and the exploration of Bruce Wayne's father issues.

"I haven't finished the script yet. I'm supposed to be doing it right now," Nolan admitted, sparking laughter from the crowd. "It does, absolutely. It's a pretty direct continuation of where the last film left off, and the last scene of Batman Begins suggests a strong direction we wanted to take the story in. It absolutely carries on with a lot of the thematic concerns and hopefully takes it someplace new."

When we asked if District Attorney Harvey Dent – a.k.a. Batman's future nemesis Two-Face – would indeed be in the film, Nolan replied, "I don't want to go into too many specifics. Yes, he is."

IGN caught up with Nolan as he was exiting the event and asked if Dent had been cast. "Not yet." Would that actor be an American, an Aussie or a Brit? "You'll see," Nolan promised.

Nolan was also asked during the event about his plans to direct the big-screen version of the TV classic, The Prisoner.

"I could but I'd really be pulling it out of my arse right now. [laughs] The Prisoner is something I've been interested in for quite a long time, and I think I've figured out the take on how we'd approach it," Nolan explained. "The relevance of it today. David and Janet Peoples are terrific, who you know wrote Blade Runner and Twelve Monkeys, all kinds of great movies. They're working on the script right now. I wouldn't want to speak for them. I'm very excited to see what they've come up with."

*sucks up news like bloodthirsty leech*

we'll take anything won't we? even if its just news that nolan hasn't finished the script, hasn't cast dent and won't tell us yet. :p

Well.....isn't this actual confirmation that Dent is for sure in the movie? I mean.....I know it was rumored like crazy, but that's the first time I've read that Nolan confirmed it.

Goyer said it outright after Begins came out.

I would say that because it's being said now and not a year ago it's more official than it was then. It'll be official when we know who's been cast.

Yeah, I know that "supposedly" Goyer said it......but still.....I think Nolan saying it sort of makes it totally official. I mean, just confirmed really. Kinda like the Joker thing....where we all sort of knew, and they knew we knew...but never really confirmed it...but we still all knew basically.

Sigh.....I think I'm just bored.....

Well, when Goyer said that, the script was just a story treatment, so it could have been discarded, but now it´s a done deal.

The first few scenes of TDK will be shot in January and principal photography won´t start till March. There´s plenty of time to finish the script.

Thanks for saying what I tried to say.....but couldn't....for some reason.

the only thing that has me a bit perplexed is that Chris Nolan said he was supposed to be working on the script right now . . . do you guys think he meant that him and Jonah were supposed to be working on it, or is he still finishing HIS draft?!?

I think a rough draft by Jonah is done, it would have to be at this point. I think what Nolan meant is that his rewrites are still in progress. Then you have studio input too that needs to be addressed.

double confirmation harvey dent latte comin' right up!

Goyer said in an interview that the script is with Nolan now.

I thought Nolan wasnt co-writing the script this time.

Some pics of Nolan sporting a beard at the event with his wife Emma Thomas.

I guess some news is good news, but I want to hear some more exciting news!

I think he means he isn't done with the final drafts. As detailed as a treatment that Jonah was given, it wouldn't take him that long to hammer out a rough draft of the script. Nolan is now trying to trim the edges and make it perfect.

There's still time to tell him what to put in it! Let's write him a letter!

I think Goyer mentioned Jonah finished his draft and had passed it onto Chris. And Ledger mentioned getting stuff faxed to him recently. Good to see there haven't been any speed bumps with getting it ready.

Noticed how Nolan said "I haven't finished the script yet. I'm supposed to be doing it right now," Nolan admitted, sparking laughter from the crowd. "It does, absolutely. Very interesting comment, Although I'm down with Nolan since he wants to make it original instead of the same style of the first one. He truly does listeneds now I just hope his vision of a "someplace new" is something we can all comprimised on, I.N.I.T.
