I would make the arrival this way:

Autobots and Decepticons are fighting at their peak of the battle on Cybertron (you see every single G1 bot in this sequence in their cybertronian form) when Shockwave (neutral like in Dreamwave's G1 V2 series) activates Unicron to end the conflict.
Unicron starts devouring the planet while the Transformers follows Prime intuition that, to survive, they must launch their sparks (they are about the size of a baseball) in space and leave their bodies at the fate of Unicron.

After thousands of years, the sparks collide reach our planet (is 1984) and land in various continents and oceans.
Some humans find the sparks and they keep them.
To explain why each Transformer has a specific alternate mode, I would make the spark unable to select the vehicle they want, but rather functioning as passive devices.
For instance: Prime's spark is found by a driver of a red flat nose with gray trailer truck. The spark is stored in the closet of the truck and it fuses itself with the whole machine (thus explaining where the tires and the color paint come from).
For Megatron I would use a military cannon, not a tank or the original pistol form 'cause also the spark wouldn't be able to fuse inside.

For the story, I don't have any clue.
I rather like to see just the two factions regrouping and fighting their uberbattle in a place like the Grand Canyon and at the end making them retreat for damage repairs.

Your origin story sucks, no offense. It sounds like some really stupid version of Masterforce which was stupid enough to begin with.

You know what? I think it sucks too.
F**k origins!
I want a 90 minutes nonstop action mayhem!
