IMDb to close "message boards" on February 20, 2017

It could've been managed though. That stuff can always be regulated. You guys remember when Youtube was just starting out? THAT place was an absolute cesspool of the worst human beings on the planet to leave comments on. Youtube cleaned it up, though.

When did this take place?

There's some funny stuff in the YouTube comment section sometimes. It kinda depends on the type of video.

When did this take place?

when google+ and youtube merged, which might've been after giving uploaders the ability to censor and filter...but that also came with all these various copyright striking and reporting.

Not nearly as bad as it used to be. There was a time where I couldn't look up a clip of X:Men the animated series without seeing some irrelevant race war in the comments.

From a Variety article on the shutdown:

"According to IMDb, it plans to launch new features in 2017 to help users “communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways,” but it didn’t provide details on what those might be."

Maybe they'll try another message board format that's moderated?

It has been suggested that maybe the money or the lack of the ways to make money off boards is the issue but the truth is a lot of people would pay for subscription that included message boards.

What is likely is the studios not liking their products criticized. So in this case those here applauding that the place is run by 'trolls' and should be closed down are applauding the limitation of free speech

The Movie Database (TMDb) (About) added yesterday (February 5th) Discussions functionality for each title (movie/TV show).

You will find it in top left of the page next to poster under Discussions button with Bubble icon, so feel free leave IMDb which abandoned users and plan to delete their content.
Sample of dicussions:
The Shawshank Redemption main page
The Shawshank Redemption discussions

You can return back to movie page by clicking on name of movie. Discussions have two categories - General, for general topics regarding movie, Content issues is self explanatory regarding content on main page.
Link to discussions from mobile browsers (even if you request desktop website) is currently NOT available, should be rolled out on Monday 6th according the admin's (Travis Bell) words. As temporary solution you can add "discuss" in the end of mobile URL.

Of course currently because TMDb just rolled out this feature, the discussions are pretty dead and wait for you to transfer there your favorite threads and start discussing.

The IMDB message boards was only good for finding leaked footage that you can't find on youtube. Otherwise it was best to avoid that noise.

In twelve years of using message boards, I've only added someone to the ignore list once, and that was a few weeks ago and on a different site. A looot of people have come close, though. :o

I have 110 people on my ignore list here.

I had a lot of people on my IMDb ignore list circa 2005-2007, but then they all left and it was fine. :funny:

I still don't understand why IMDb just doesn't attempted to moderate them. I know it's a lot, but still. That seems a better solution than deleting the boards all together.

Bad is still bad.

Damnit it, this is something that will be missed.

I do love how far back you can look at your forum posts on IMDB. 2005-2006 interesting time for me on IMDB, I didn't recall, but apparently I posted in a lot of WWE related forums.

The boards are now gone.

Not sure why they didn't wait until tomorrow.

Ahhh, I shall miss discussing the hotness of obscure actresses.
