IMDb to close "message boards" on February 20, 2017

Lol some people just can't let it die.

The problem is that these new boards that have cropped up will never have the traffic of IMDB. They're all scattered.

There will never be a forum comparable to IMDb. It was a vast site, and completely unmoderated. I couldn't believe the stuff that people got away with saying. Sometimes stuff got flagged, and then the post or thread might get deleted. But aside from that, anybody could just post anything. Oddly, curse words weren't allowed, which was a joke on that site, since they would probably only have improved the quality of the conversations.

If the boards for the movies and TV shows weren't bad enough, the general boards were even worse. They had boards for miscellaneous stuff like pets, fashion, automotive, music, etc. From what I can tell, the busiest of all was the Politics board. It was also the most disgusting, trollish, bigoted, and opinionated.

Shortly before the forums were shut down I saw a thread that said, "I went to Macy's and took a poop in one of Ivanka Trump's shoes." That was the actual name of the thread. And what's more, it was one of the more high-brow threads there. And it got several replies. So the person started another thread, this time about wiping his hindquarters on one of Ivanka Trump's dresses. And this was on the board for Politics.

I wonder where some of these people will end up, now that their old stomping grounds have been shut down. Other forums expect people to have conversations that are actually coherent, and relatively polite. The IMDb trolls and wise guys might have to change their style.

Probably 4chan.

That actually seemed pretty tame compared to other titles.

MovieChat.org is using a back up of previous IMDb threads and discussions are open to join. Someone also created a script allowing us to access MovieChat boards from any IMDb page.

Some of the titles have some ported threads, but most of the boards I checked are empty.

Maybe IMDb should look into a new message board format that they can moderate. If they don't have something in there, their traffic is going to decline to the point that there will no longer be any reason to keep it up.

IMDB is a pretty important site for the biz, namely crew and cast. It ain't going anywhere (for now).

This is disappointing. Obviously IMDB threads have a much higher than normal cesspool quota and we all like to make fun of it now and then, but nowhere else can you find pages of discussion on virtually any movie.

Oh well.

This is what I liked about the site. Any movie from anytime you could go to their board and ask questions and get an answer you couldn't find anywhere else. IMDB shot themselves in the foot with how they didn't moderate their boards although I know it would be difficult because there were so many.
And Reddit is awful
