Season III: "The Merc with a Mekong"

Welcome to Inside The Poster's Studio: Season III once again. I'm your host, trustyside-kick, and tonight I have Syn (Mercenary) on the hot seat to answer a few questions.

trustyside-kick: Before we turly begin, I'm curious Syn...where does your name come from? Couldn't tell if it is a character named Syn who is a mercenary, or if Syn is sort of a nickname of yours, or what. Course...you could just like mercenaries and thought Syn was a cool name.

Syn (Mercenary): The name comes from a lot of things but one of the main reasons was basically taking the word "Sin"...and throwing a Y in there. When you put it like that...I guess all the mystery disapears.

trusty: Fair enough, just something I was curious about. Now, you are in real life (IRL) friends with the poster Eddie Brock. Did you pull him into the Hype! or was it the other way around?

Syn: Eddie brought me to Hype. Then he told me about the RPGs section and I eventually followed and got into them here. I wasn't new to RPGing, but I wasn't a master then either.

trusty: Yes, I recall you two making your DC debut I believe at the start of Season V. I believe you played Brainiac briefly.

Syn: Yeah, and I was so awesome. What with my bunnying of MST3K's Lex Luthor. And I really showed my superiority by not knowing the term "bunnying" or the concept of not doing it.

trusty: Heh, well I think we all had something "odd" when starting out. Some people just have it rougher than others.

Syn: Yeah. But, after that little incident I took a few months to read up on the rules, and read past seasons in the Hype RPGs to get the jist of how things went. Once I did that, I fit in much more smoothly.

trusty: Ah, I was going to ask that actually. I recalled you and EB disappearing from the DC RPG for some time, making your return this Season. What brought you guys back this past Season?

Syn: Well, to be honest, Byrd is what brought me back to the DC RPG. He kept coaxing me to join as Rose. And you know, no man can deny the Byrd Man. So I joined. Glad I did. I mean, one of the intimidating things about the DC RPG was all the history in the seasons past. But, once you go back and read them, it's not any different from the others.

trusty: Yes, DC most definitely has been blessed with some compelling storytelling. Which RPG would you say is your favorite though? You seem to be everywhere.

Syn: Well, with Harvey as my newest addition in DC, that RPG may prove to be my favorite in time to come. But I think where I've had the most fun and influence is the Ultimate Marvel RPG.

trusty: Tell me, what is your favorite arc from Ultimate Marvel thus far?

Syn: Probably the arc we're involved in now. The return of Cable. It's really given me a chance to go all out and really play as evil a character as I can.

trusty: Care to expand on that arc for those of us, such as myself, who aren't in Ultimate Marvel?

Syn: Well, when I first joined Ultimate Marvel. I wanted to play Cable. Unfortunately, I was told he was killed as an infant in Season I of the RPG. So, ever since then, I really always wanted to play Cable, despite his death. So as time went by, I started developing an idea, and soon enough in Season IV, I brought Cable back. Only this time, he wasn't the good noble man we all know.

This Cable was an evil man, a dictator of the country of Rumekistan. For a season he has been slaughtering mutants in his country, commiting mass genocide to carry out a secret vendetta just recently revealed. After all the planning, we were finally able to have the X-men come to Rumekistan. Their mission was to save their friend who was kidnapped. Dazzler was kidnapped by a mercenary hired by Cable, and she was used as bait to bring the X-men to him. During her captivity she's been tortured and raped. And, I must say, Noon who plays Dazzler has done a magnificent job.

But, anyway, Cable revealed to the X-men during a dinner than he captured Dazzler, and that he is the son of Jean and Scott. So now we have a really bloody battle going on in a fight for survival. Everyone involved is doing a great job and I am really pleased with the arc so far. I'd like to say there's a shorter way to say it, but really, I condensed it a lot.

trusty: No need to worry. It is clear you are passionate about your work in that arc. Obviously the results when a writer is truly passionate about a story are going to be great.

Syn: Yes, hopefully. Nothing is better than seeing everyone enjoy something you put so much time into.

trusty: Now, I got to really come familiar with you as a poster through the first Season of the Create-A-Hero/Villain RPG. To my surprise, not nearly as many people were in the RPG. Care to share the marvels of your character Pulse? Maybe we can reel in some new faces.

Syn: Well, Pulse used to be an FBI agent until a case led him to a secret terrorist lab. There, his partner was shot and Eric (Pulse) was tortured and given an experiment drug that really messed with his mind, and eventually gave him the ability to emit shockwaves from the pores in his skin. So now Eric is out, trying to find out who did this to him, in addition to waging a war on crime, killing anyone he deems guilty. I must say, CAH is a great idea and I don't know why more people aren't in there. Once you work out the kinks in the applications so you don't have people running around going, "I'M GOD!!! I WILL KILL YOU ALL IN ONE POST!11!!!' then it's a great RPG.

trusty: Yes. I just wish I had more time to continue in it. But the stuff you have thrown in, along with other great characters has been some nice stuff. Who knows, maybe this interview will make people realize what they've been missing.

Syn: Well, if I can say anything to get new people involved, it'd be this. It's our world, our rules. You can make any character you want and have the chance to really go all out with your ideas. Plus...we have hookers and booze.

trusty: Wow...missed that somehow.

Syn: See, this proves I'm not lying. So come on over!

trusty: Alrighty, well...I have noticed something: you have potrayed Namor The Submariner in 3 Marvel RPGs in the past. I never realized you had such love for the fish guys.

Syn: Ah, yes. My love affair with Namor. Sadly, I find the same problem you have with Aquaman. No one else likes or gets the character. In 616 Marvel, Namor is the fair ruler to his Atlantean people. He shows his power, and doesn't take **** from anyone. And he's never timid to start war over anything. And in Ultimate Marvel, he's a terrorist with a god-complex. I mean, how come he isn't more popular? :?

trusty: Because Aquaman is better? :o

Syn: Namor can kick his own ass. Has Arthur done that?

trusty: I fail to see how that is a good thing...

Syn: Well, in Avengers/Invaders he fought his past self and won. Not to mention the fact that Namor killed his son once in the past because the kid tried to overthrow Atlantis by starting a war with America.

trusty: Are you referring to the recent Namor Mini?

Syn: Yes, I am. :)

trusty: Ah...would be best we move on then.

Syn: Most likely. But Namor > Aquaman...:oldrazz:

trusty: Oh boy, you're treading in dangerous waters there.

Syn: ...did you plan that pun?

trusty: Nope.

Syn: That's what's scary.

trusty: I like Subby and all...but I overall like Orin's history. But uh, all this said...you should pick up Namor in Marvel again. You sound like you are a fan.

Syn: Yeah, I've been mulling it over for a while. So, it is possible.

trusty: Alrighty, with the conclusion of this past Season in DC...talking about Rose and Two-Face was inevitable: let's start off with Rose. First off, why'd you go for her?

Syn: Well, I am an avid Deathstroke fan. Always loved Slade, and his stories were always interesting. In addition to loving Slade, I love the Titans. So when Deathstroke returned to the pages of the new series back in 2000 or so, it was sure to be awesome. But, it was in the pages of Teen Titans that Rose really got interesting.

trusty: Are you familiar with her appearance in Nightwing as well as Batgirl?

Syn: I own the trades. :cwink:

trusty: Just checking. Awesome stuff. Continue.

Syn: Yeah, so Rose's relationship with her dad got interesting as she did his bidding. Until, she realized he was using her (thanks to Nightwing, as you mentioned) and then she decided to leave him and join the titans. The concept of a killer suddenly going straight out of spite was really interesting, and that's the main thing about Rose that interested me.

trusty: Did you know going into the recent DA2 arc, that she had some history with the first? Mainly pertaining to a certain member of the Arrow Family?

Syn: Yes, I talked with Trigger over her work with Rose breifly, and GL made it quite clear Roy and Supergirl want her dead. That's why I loved the interaction him and I had between Rose/Supergirl and Roy/Rose.

trusty: It was fun to see characters still scarred from the first DA.

Now, I asked EB this in his interview...but with you it is different: you have been having a fling with Cats' Robin and Sensei's Zatara. Ever get wierd writing those certain posts?

Syn: Not really. I mean, it's me writing a girl getting with a guy. Not me getting with Catman or Sensei.

...no matter how much anyone wants it.

trusty: Which poster would you say you've had the most fun interacting and working with?

Syn: Hard to say, as it always is. Everyone I've worked with has been good for so many different reasons. Sensei's great for witty banter and kickass emotional conflict, Catman's fun cause we're on the same wavelength, Spike_x1 is good for his often gritty style, Master Bruce is always fun for noir writing, and Venom160 and I are pretty much clones. So whatever we write, it's like we're both on the same page.

trusty: Fair enough. Which poster would you like to work with that you've yet to interact with?

Syn: Well, JRK and I have had limited RPG interaction. Same with Keyser. Time will tell if we'll interact more.

trusty: Well, with you picking up Two-Face I'm pretty sure sometime down the road next Season in DC you will get that chance with at least one of them.

Syn: You never know, man. You never know. :cwink:

trusty: From the sound of things, not just in DC but also in the Concept thread for the possible return of WSS?...you are a big fan of Harvey. Anything we can expect to see in the near future that you are just dying to share?

Syn: Well, to be as non spoilerish as possible. You can expect to see major internal conflict as he copes with the death of his ally, his enemy, The Batman. And don't forget, it'll be DOUBLE the excitement.

trusty: What lies in store for the rest of your characters? Time to give people a few sneak peeks.

Syn: Well, with Pulse he'll be finding that evil comes in many different forms, for Cap he'll discover that a country isn't always united, for Rose she'll be figuring out her feelings and coping with a major event, in UDC Jim Gordon will be fighting with himself over his affair with his partner. And for Spider-Man in Ultimate Marvel, he'll be having a visit from an old friend and a twisted family member in the near future.

trusty: Intriguing. Before we close, what is one character you'd love to have your hands at portraying?

Syn: Superman. He's my favorite character in comics and my favorite hero all around. Symbol of America and the Man of Tomorrow.

trusty: Huh, didn't expect that. Don't recall you portraying many of the characters in his mythos except for Metallo for a while in UDC and Brainiac briefly in DC.

Syn: Yeah, not many people expect that answer.

trusty: Well then, I think Andy C. has to watch his back a bit.

Syn: Perhaps...you never know where the Mercenary is lurking...

trusty: Or penguins skilled in the art of war.

Syn: Nah. I fought them. They aren't as deadly as you think.

trusty: ...you're a horrible horrible man.

Syn: That's why I can do what I do.

That was a horrible interview and I hope Syn dies by sneezing out his spine.

:cmad:

According to Wikipedia, there's a Mekhong whiskey. But Mekong is a river in Asia.

For some reason, I want to say it's in Vietnam.

Maybe I'll be able to whip something up this weekend but still in the process of recovering from the Hurricane. I only have internet access at the moment at work and school.

Someone should do a mass interview with the guys responsible for the Marvel reboot.

Sort of like a weird, screwed up version of a commentary track over it's success.
