The fights don't need to be so disorienting to appear "brutal". The fights in Casino Royale were brutal enough without being so rapidly edited and closely shot.

I guess they should preserve the fighting technique, but only pull back a little bit so that people can see the action.

YES, Casino Royale was great.

I think Nolan might've been trying to achieve something like this:

Although this isn't the best example of "chaotic action", I think this is better than what was seen in Batman Begins. I found the action to be very frustrating, especially after seeing how well the fights themselves were choreographed in all of the behind the scenes footage. While I agree that the character of Batman should stay away from the heavily choreographed action of asian action films, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to get some sort of idea of how he would fight.

The action in Casino Royale was great, considering the feel of the film and characters (much more grounded than a typical Hong Kong action flick) I would definitely keep the choreography style of Batman Begins, but like as many have mentioned before, pull the camera back and ease up on the editing. Quick cutting can be very effective, but if only done correctly:

Now that was a great example of quick cutting, but that still may be a little too clear for the action in a Batman film.

I think the point that Nolan was trying to make was well achieved. I mean, you watch Batman & Robin, and it's like a performance of Cirque de Solei. The last thing I want to see in a fully functional, mostly believable Batman movie is Bats showing up to a fight and kicking ass like a cheerleader.

Yeah, and I agree that Batman shouldn't be throwing spin kicks and such. But there are better ways of shooting a chaotic and intense fight scene without resorting to headache-inducing editing and camerawork. There's a fine line between brutal yet artistic action and just plain sloppy editing. And with Batman Begins, while he may have achieved his goal to an extent, I think Nolan was really leaning more towards the sloppy editing side.

OK, after watching that video, I couldn't be happier with BB's choreography. That thing must've been planned by kindergartners.

It's funny, because it's like watching a musical. Like West Side Story or something.

Nope, i dont want the fights to be crappy like in begins. i want them to get back to the original batman movie type fights

So you want him to just stand there and wait for the bad guys to come to him.

Okie dokie.

I would say: keep the style. It was perfect for me. it was something new. It made Batman style. Period. It was no point of comparation with ANY superhero film, and most important, it moved way from the past Bat-encarnations. It reminded me of bats flying against bruce's face in the cave at the begining. It makes every sense. My opinion: Keep it...

I think part of why the fight scenes were the way they were is because they didn't want it to look like a regular guy fight. Batman has no powers, and he's dressed up like a super hero. In reality Bruce would have probably just dressed up like a ninja as opposed to a bat.

so since he's dressed like a bat, Nolan doesn't want the fights to look like just two regular guys fighting. It's hard to make the fight look different from that, without exagerating and making it look farfetched and fake. so the ygo for the darkness. Hiding in the shadows and popping out. It's really the only possible way a human being can enter a room full of guys with guns and kick all their asses. If the camera lets us see him, than chances are the bad guys can see him, and they would try to shoot him and Batman can't dodge bullets.

The fight scenes obviously aren't as good as Spider-Man 2 or even Spider-Man 1, but if anybody has any real ideas as to how to improve them without hurting Batman's credibility I'm all ears.

I understand that it shouldn't look like a regular fight, but that doesn't mean the fights themselves should be frustrating to watch either. I just think that the editing leaves much to be desired. I'm not saying pull back the camera far enough so we can see Batman from head to toe kicking everybody's ass, because I think that would look ridiculous (Nolan would have to suspend our disbelief a lot better in order to pull that off) But instead of showing Batman throw one move and then cut, pull the camera back a bit and allow maybe at least three moves and then cut. That way it'll seem more like a cohesive fight rather than a montage of God knows what.

I really didn't care for the style of the fights in Begins. I really hope they find a way to achieve that same goal without making it look so crappy.

Does Nolan know that over 50 percent of the general movie audience and comic book fans never liked the fighting of batman begins? Seriously speaking, The fighting and action needed much much work. To me batman begins was a bit slow paced in terms of the action however, it seems like right in the beginning of the dark knight we get to see joker wilding out. Hopefully Nolan as a director progress in terms of directing action and fighting. We haven't heard any news on how the fighting will be, and heck who the hell in the movie is going to be physically challenging to batman. I hope we get to see batman show off his acrobatic skills and I hope this film is bigger and better. According to the Nolan's we will see batman's detective side. Hopefully the batpod will emerge from the tumbler. Right before the tumbler gets blown up now that will be sweet. Joker blowing up the tumbler would be even more awesome. Joker's ride having nos would be even more awesome. The only thing that concerns me is the fighting and action. I know the storyline will be nice, but it will be nice to see that we get the full package, crazy storyline, humor, crazy action and a sick ass twist. Live on the bat!!!!!!!!

Nolan said the fighting in the first one was intentional as how it was cut. He wanted to show what it would be like to be jumped by Batman - chaos.

But Batman's fighting style is Kensei which is a close-style type of martial arts. He probably won't get too acrobatic in any film.

The editing in general annoyed me, it was really unlike Nolan to go so wild with the cuts. Alot of scenes didn't quite flow properly either, especially the chase. I kind of appreciate what he tried to do with the fights, although it lessens the impact and skill of Batman when you only get flashes of what could be anything.

I always assume that it was the costume that dictated the action over Nolan's desires. Hopefully the new costume will remedy that.

I liked when he picked one of the ninjas to jump on and took him down onto the street below. And I assume the thread starter took a poll to come to the conclusion he did?

I want a bit of both

With common thugs have the BB fight/jump scenes

With Joker and his thugs show a bit more fighting (pull the camera back a bit)

It's more of an assumption, but not unwarranted. A majority of critics reviews mentioned the spazzy editing as a flaw. And it's been discussed over and over again at the forums, so it's safe to say the decision on filming action has split opinions.

well this isnt mortal kombat you know...i dont think there will be much fighting like in BB...at least not that kind of action...i think we will get more shooting and explosions caused by the joker maybe
