Comics Is anyone else just not a big fan of ASM right now?

You ain't exactly a Ryan Gosling of comic book fans yourself JH. Don't kid yourself, you've been around a longtime too.

I just saw the blurb on Superior Spider-man in the Spidey thread in the Marvel Comics section. As someone who hated the whole I Am The Spider bit just before the Clone Saga, I have a bad feeling about this...

Enjoy, Arrow, Thunder! I can't because my cable company is in dispute with our local CW affiliate!

never have that prob with the CW, especially since it and me are based in the same city...

and Arrow was pretty fookin' good, by the way...

Our CW is on a longtime local TV station in the biggest TV market in the country. It was one of the seven stations in the area before cable. So, it's odd not getting it right now.

7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that's the number.

♫7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch.♫ You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby.

Step into my office......cause you're f**king fired!

LOL! I was just watching that the other day!

let me get the Andru thing straightened out...

when Andru first came on the book, I really didn't like him at all, especially after seeing his first effort on Spidey with that Marvel Super Heroes #14, which I STILL find to be a lacklustre effort...

when he came onto the ASM title itself, I was not pleased in the least, remembering that MSH issue... after a time, I gradually started to accept the art and slowly grew to like it... not much, but it was easier to digest after a time... his art did improve from the time between MSH and his first ASM effort...

Andru isn't one of my favorites but I've appreciated and accepted his years past work on the ASM title as time went by... he's not one of my faves, but he's ok...

so Andru compared to Ramos IS an art god... I will ALWAYS find Ramos' art awesomely repulsive... I never liked him on his first run on Spidey and then when he returned a while back...

as for my favorite artists for Spidey?... well, I'm old school, so Ditko and Romita Sr are at the top of the list... as for the others...

Mark Bagley
Ron Frenz
Jim Mooney
JRJR
Mike Deodato
John Byrne
Ed Hannigan
John Buscema
Keith Pollard
Mike Weiringo
Mark Buckingham
Todd McFarlane...

and as for the ones I just can't really get into...

Humberto Ramos
Joe Bennett
Sal Buscema
Steve Skroce
Alex Saviuk
Erik Larsen
Gil Kane
Al Milgrom
Marcos Martin

all of the above isn't a complete list, just the ones that come to mind at the moment...

they're MY personal preferences... don't fault me for mine... I don't fault you for yours...

and that's it, really, not that I have to explain myself to you or anyone else, which I DON'T, but I just wanted to clarify and enlighten you and any others as to what I was saying and meaning earlier about the Andru remark...

take it or leave it, like it or not...

end of discussion

I remember when Ramos was doing Spectacular Spidey, I would see the comics in the store and think 'Ugh, how terrible!' Then he did some issues of Wolverine a few years ago and I sort of got into his art and then went back and read his stuff in Spidey. His recent work in ASM is some of my favorite.

One person you list as liking is JRJR. I still cannot justify how this is the same guy who so beautifully illustrated some of my favorite issues of Iron Man from the 70s. I can only assume he may have been helped by Layton BUT his work on ANYTHING he does with Spidey makes me cringe! His legs look like sticks and overall he (Spidey) just looks emaciated. Not appealing to me at all. I also hate how he draws faces, particularly eyes (always look like they're stoned) and lips, period. As someone said, art is subjective but JRJR, IMO, fell a loooooong way from the tree.

One you listed as not liking, Sal Buscema, is one of my all-time favorites!

Yeah, I've never liked JRJR either. His upcoming Cap stuff looks okay, but that's in large part due to White's colors.

For the most part with artists, my taste can vary. I liked Marcos Martin for a long time, then slowly just got tired of his work. The same with Mark Bagley, actually.

One artist that I hated at first, but actually grew to enjoy quite a bit was Paul Azaceta. His anatomy was often dreadful, but due to his narative ability and the overall tone of his art, I really started enjoying him quite a bit. Although, he'd probably be much better on a book featuring a dark character like Daredevil or Venom than Amazing.

I just never understood it. I mean, look at Junior's art in say Amazing #229 - it looks NOTHING like his current rendering of Spidey. His art back then was phenomenal! Nowadays I think my kid could draw better (he's 1!).

*edit: I was mistaken as to who this was. I was at work and doing 3 things at once and for some reason thought he was the guy from Reign.

And I gotta tell ya, to each their own but I thought Reign was one of the worst Spidey stories I have ever read. Now understand I'm coming from the position that I like my Spidey stories colorful (literally) and not too dark (figuratively) and with a generous dose of humor. The only thing I thought wsas amusing from that story - which used to be my sig - was when Spidey said 'There are 3 kinds of people: those who can do math and those who can't.' Azaceta's art didn't particularly catch my notice but as you said it is probably more suited for darker characters which I have never been all that into (well, except for classic Marvel monsters).

Stories like that just leave me feeling depressed. Same reason I'm in the minority for not liking the TDK movie. Just left me feeling freaking desolate and down. And that's one of the things that pisses me off every time I hear about how Superior Spidey is going to be darker. That has been such an unoriginal go-to device now. 'Hey, it worked for Batman so let's do it with everybody.' It's like they think nowadays unless a story is dark and serious, it won't be taken seriously. I think for me they jumped the shark with what they did with Speedball in Civil War. Same as with the restarts, this just seems to say to me 'We're completely out of ideas so...hey, let's make him dark and serious and see what happens!'

On a sidenote, it surprises me to read that you don't like Deodato because I always thought that his and Garney's work was similar.

And back to Spidey-specific artists, one of my very least favorites is Keith Pollard. After Andru's run, his artwork was like several giant steps backwards for me. It did get better shortly with JRJR but again, that was a much different JRJR than we see today.

yeah, Romita Jr HAS dropped drastically in the quality of his art...

when he first came onto ASM, he was really appealing with a touch of his old man to his work, but when he returned years later to Peter Parker, I believe, SOMETHING in his work got lost bigtime and was really lacking...

maybe one day we'll see his kid, Vince, doing some art on Spidey and making it a third generation Spidey effort...

is Vince Romita even INTERESTED in following in dad and granddad's footsteps as an artist?

Again, guys, we're on different pages re: art.

I liked JRJR's work when he first came to Amazing in the 80's. It was nice, but it looked like he was copying his old man too much, so it came off a bit pale in comparison.

However, when he came back to the title near the end of the Clone Saga with his new style was when I really began to dig his work! And I still do. I'd love it if he could rotate into Amazing as well. In fact, as particular as I am on how Spidey's eyes are drawn, his is one of my favorites (if not the favorite).
