BvS Is anyone else not excited about Superman and Batman? I feel nothing but dread. - Part 2

Not from my experiences. I've tried watching it a few times with my pals and my family. Their overall feeling is that this Superman is a miserable git who needs to get over himself lol.

That's not how i view it. But the idea that the only people who dislike Man of Steel are critics too attached to the Donner films and hardcore fanboys is stupid.

Like i've said before, I hope Dawn of Justice shows us a Superman who has grown into the role and who embraces his responsibilities. Who is proud of them, not burdened by them. Superman does his thing with a smile on his face and is never shy of the public eye.

That's what makes him Superman, that is who he is, that is what defines him... He's not one of his grim expys like The Sentry or Plutonian who are constantly struggling with the responsibilities of this God like power and are driven mad by them.

I understand that Man of Steel is basically Superman Begins. That he is learning, coming to terms with who he is and what he must do. It makes sense for him to at first struggle with this huge responsibility. But if he doesn't grow beyond that, if he doesn't learn to embrace his role as Superman and be proud of it... then well, i'll never fully enjoy this portrayal of the character.

The great thing about Superman is that he has mainly been consistent all this years. He's never succumbed to the "cool" cynical side of comics. He's always been that shining beacon of joy and wonder, even when the more cynical and grimdark "cool" characters became more popular.

From real life, I've heard people call it the dumbest movie ever and one of their favourite movies of recent years.

Yea it's definitely mixed. I just feel that they consciously compromised Superman a bit to appeal more to the people who think cynical and realistic and grim is "cool" and that joy and fun is corny or lame.

Well **** those people, they suck. They should go watch The Muppets and have their eyes opened.

As big of a movie MoS was, personal experiences are going to differ. All that I've seen, MoS made fans out of Superman when it comes to the average person but there's virtually no way of knowing exactly. From my experience from being around forums and whatnot, that's what I gathered.

As far as Superman being all smiley and happy that defines him, sure. I agree but MoS was meant to tear Superman down and build him back up with growth and progression. In Man of Steel, the story was simply about Clark Kent more than anything. He didn't become Superman yet but with his experiences now behind him, I expect the character to naturally progress into the Superman we all know too familiar.

Realistic, grim, cynical and cool was ALL over the place in MoS, but the way I saw it, the aurora of Superman shined through. The kindness was still there. The way he hugs his mother and interacts with his mother were great and heartwarming scenes in the midst of an alien invasion movie where Superman is basically a confused individual throughout. Him thanking Lois for believing in him and trusting in Lois herself was a great thing to see.

This DCCU is going to have that tone without a shadow of a doubt. They are the COMPLETE opposite of Marvel. DC is going to be a serious approach to these superhero's and won't be more of the same that Marvel puts out but I do expect lighter and heartfelt moments coming from Supes. More smiling indeed.

Yea there was some moments like that. And i do understand this is Clark/Kal coming to terms with who he must be as Superman.

And i don't expect these films to be the same style as Marvels with the self awareness and sometimes zany humour.

I just want more scenes like the first flight, where Kal is enjoying the hell out of this. Cavill has a great smile. Let's see more of that and less of the furrowed brow!

I mentioned it the other day but i'd love a scene like in All Star when Superman is seemingly in five places at once, saving people and then quickly getting ready for work at the Planet. It's just a really cool moment, but in a fun lighthearted way.

Man, there are people who want so see this film fail so bad and the SHH moderators just let this thread linger here to allow them to contaminate people's minds into thinking that it will. It is so sad.

People are free to discuss whether or not they have trepidations about this film. No one is "contaminating" anyone's mind, do you realize how dramatic that sounds?

I agree, one of my biggest complaints about MoS was that I felt it was unnecessarily dour and grim. Since he's more or less found himself now, I hope that in his next appearance he will be able to enjoy himself and quit being so "dark" for the sake of dark, because that is not Superman to me.

Totally agreed.

I always said though, I don't care how dark and gritty they make the world... just as long as Superman himself is not a dark and gritty character within it.

I feel like his character was a 'good' person definitely, and had the right air about him in that sense of kindness... but he just seemed so sad.

I am really hoping that now he's found his place and settled into who he is and how he fits into the world, that we might be able to see him with a bit more hope about him.

Yeah same. Few friends liked it but without much enthusiasm, and the majority said they were dissapointed/thought it was a bad film.

Even my own opinion is a mixed bag that seems to change every time I see it. There are parts I love, parts I hate, and when you put everything together in the overall package I just feel really conflicted about it.

I blame jonathan kent. Dude really did a number on his alien son.

Eh, Supes survived a World Engine, he can survive bad parenting. :cwink:

Everything you say influences the readers (unless) they dont understand the language. Often, people repeat what they read on these threads. Whats also sad is the fact that the negative things people say on this thread are either unfounded or completely wrong. No, I do not believe that you can speak your mind freely on this website since it is privately owned and are not beholden to any free speech laws (case in point, you can not use foul language here), snd that is why it is best to not post at all if you dont have your facts straight.

As much as I note the sarcasm (:p) I think a lot of my own feeling of 'sadness' from the film was around JK.

If they had just included some kind of happy family memory in there, I think it would have helped a lot. Like the Kents all sitting round the table for a home cooked meal, joking with each other. Or father and son playing ball in the garden and smiling with the dog jumping around...

I dunno... anything that showed his childhood was not all doom and gloom.

As it was, all they showed were lectures and speeches, and all of them with a heavy sense of sadness about them.

Seriously, you're hilarious.

I always say within the context of the film, he's the one to blame. He did some sociopathic actions. So, Clark turns out the way he did.

well that was kinda creepy...

edit: i wasnt really being sarcastic about jk. more like hyperbolic for the sake of humor. offing himself like that was a sick joke.

Dude, just because you can find a handful of friends who foud a film to be dumb as you say doesn't make it so. That's not even a scientific assessment (just like the critics reviews aren't). The truth of the matter is that exit polling showed that most people liked "Man of Steel" and the boxoffice numbers show that it was more popular than "Iron Man" and if the film was really bad we wouldn't be getting a sequel.

enough with the "exit polls" and Cinemascore man. theyre useless as statistical bellwethers. dont care enough to explain why, but google is your friend here.

And if he was saying that his experiance was a reflection of the majority, then you'd have a point.

But he wasn't.

He was just saying that the negative opinions that exist don't ALL come from Donner fanboys.

There are people who had no allegiances who just didn't like the film period.

I still don't understand why the Donner films keep getting brought up as a reason why people didn't like MOS.

I still don't understand why the Donner films keep getting brought up as a reason why people didn't like MOS.

I think it's because some of the first critics mentioned them. And in general, people have got this assumption that when people complain about the tone of the film not being 'happy enough' it's because they got their idea of Superman from the 'happy' Donner films.

It's silly though.

Most people in the GA I know who went in to see MOS judged it only by the standard set by the modern wave of Superhero films. Not comparing it to something from the 70s.

Speaking only from personal experience, most of my family and friends enjoyed MOS a lot (I saw it with my brother last night and he thought it was quite good.) I've also spoken with random people here and there and the overall consensus among them has been positive. There are of course some who say it was disappointing, but I've never heard anyone say the proverbial "it was the worst movie ever!"

Cinemascore is far from being usless. It is a trustd sourc by the film industry (I checked in Google). I guess you didn't want to explain so that you could get away with posting anothe inaccurate opinion.

eh, i tried (granted, not very hard).

on topic: i have a feeling we will get a cheerier Supes in this new film. if only to contrast with Batman. not too worried about emo-clark part deux happening.
