Is Secret Invasion racist?

I suppose, kill enough of an entire race and the minority becomes the majority. (Assuming they were already hiding out on the fringe of the empire due to persecution by the majority like this buncha fanatics were.)
Well this was the point i was leading to and when the minority becomes the majority, then the skrulls become a stereotypical race to hate again.

Is it fair to judge the Skrulls based on that, though? Kill every human except our criminals or terrorists or whatever and we'd look pretty awful, too.
but criminals terrorists and whatever are all criminals and terrorists for completely different individual reasons.

there are still a group of entities that should be distinguished from one another rather than being seen as a 'collective entity' all going in the same direction.

I mean we are effectively being bread to think it is alright to deal with a alien force with hostility as it brings humanity closer together and allows for us to settle our own petty differences for the mean time.

It's a very linear story telling method in a time where divertsity (even among common enemies) is welcomed rather than having a race of cannon fodder.

But that's the thing man, they aren't portraying all the Skrulls as evil. The whole argument is moot because we know this. To say that there aren't any Skrulls involved that aren't murdering zealots is just an assumption. We aren't seeing this from the POV of the every Skrull that's apart of the invasion force, we're seeing it from the POV of humanity, and in some of the tie ins, the leaders of the Skrulls. We've seen apparently several Hank Pym Skrulls have a change of heart and have to be put down. We've got several Skrulls actively fighting on the side of humanity. Poor John Lennon Skrull got killed trying to help humanity. My point is, to say that they are trying to put across a message like you're suggesting is crazy talk.

Yeah, I gave a bunch of examples of Skrulls who don't feel the same. Crusader was actually part of the religious group conducting the invasion but he ultimately turned on them and defected to Earth's side.

I guess Battlestar Galactica is racist as well. Cause Secret Invasion is just the same thing. John Carpenter's The Thing is rascist cause they wouldn't let him procreate. Mulder and Scully are definately racist.

Your thread question is legitimate, just a bit too PC in the assesment. It's ok to be a little bit racist.

[SING]If we all could just admit
That we are racist a little bit,
Even though we all know
That it's wrong,
Maybe it would help us
Get along.[/SING]

it all comes down to an overgeneralisation of a group of people which does happen alot in sci-fi fantasy.

Galactica's a bad example too, since several of the Cylons have been sympathetic to humans and have come to abhor their leaders' attempts at genocide.

I think that's just it, the fact it's called a Skrull invasion is an overgeneralisation and isn't representative of the entire skrull and should belong to a cult group.

But the group is now the majority which leads to a generalisation of the entire race.

I mean it's not something that will keep me up at night but i am aware that science fiction is well known for uncovering a very human trait for us to fear and don't understand, especially things that look different to us on fundamental instinct. Perhaps the thread starter is highlighting this course of action has been used for a while and perhaps less general species specific behaviour should be attached to alien races in this day and age.

Just calling it the Skrull Invasion is the misleader here. If this group were called the Taliban then it would be alot easier.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

I usually think of them as a group of religious zealots more than anything else. Those are bad no matter what race or culture they come from.

Yeah, so it's more accurate to say it's religious prejudice, which it isn't.

You only notice this recently? For months they've been calling the Skrulls 'monsters'. Even Professor X called them that, and he used to help them before one of those lame Apocalypse sagas. It's almost like the Skrulls are the Persian Empire from that P.O.S. entitled '300'.
Cyclops needs to kick a Skrull down a giant pit yelling, "This! Is! FRISCO!"

I'm sorry, but did you just say that 300 was a "Piece of S**t"? Cuz if so, your opinion is no longer valid.

Oh boy. That guy has a history of insulting everybody from Canadians to the Shi'ar. Makes you wonder if he's not a Republican. :woot:

300 isn't that great in all honesty, it makes troy seem like a masterpiece.

But it is not, a piece of s**t. Red Mask is a Piece of Bush!!

I thought it was fun. Pretty much everything about it is over the top, and you have to take it in that context.

300 was an overstylized popcorn flick. It was fun; Not some great artistic accomplishment though.

In genral i`m just annoyed with how marvel ahs the skrulls as just bbeing evil.

I don`t think SI is out and out racist I just think marvel is a lil close to the line this time. Especially with the accept change pictures.

Now 300 is racist. Because persians exist and they sure as hell aren`t lotr rejects.

Of course Secret Invasion isn't racist.

It's speciesist.

The analogy doesn't work because it's an Invasion - think of the Spanish invasion of Southern America, the Roman Invasions of Gaul, the Mongolian Invasion of Europe, American Invasion of Iraq or any number of instances when a powerful Empire invaded another land - you can't blame the natives for being Hostile to them. Usually Invaders do bring messages of peace and more often of not they do it under a banner of new religious ideas. There will be natives who want to embrace the invaders and there will people against them, and the people who are appointed to protect the Nation will fight back against the invaders. None of this has anything to do with racism.

If anything that Marvel have done well in Secret Invasion is that they've got the modern day propaganda down fantastically the "Embrace Change" stuff is exactly what nations do to win hearts and minds in invasions.

Honestly, if you want racism in comics 300 carries a much more deep seeded racist message.

Yeah, but its kinda based on a true story. Did the Persians not invade Greece with it's massive army? Liberties may have been taken, but I mean come on, Army of Millions verses an army of few? It's ingrained in the human spirit to root for the underdog.
