It's Either In You Or It's Not a.k.a. The Defenders

if they handled big universal threats I'd agree with you...but they havent.

The point of what I was saying is they should. That's how you make the defenders work as a team in a series of minis.

ok I think we are looking at two series being promoted...one for Defenders and one for Jason Aaron and Marc Silvestri's Hulk series

Bleeding Cool is reporting that the writer for the Defenders will be Matt Fraction with the Dodsons on art. The story deals with the Defenders fighting a Black Hulk. Or Blulk as I like to refer to it. But Marvel reps and Bleeding Cool itself are saying that the story is not 100% accurate. Stay tuned they say.

Oh dear lord, I think that long-dreaded Ultimate crossover is happening.

Yeah, but be honest he has like punched darkseid before. If he just sat in the background like oracle you'd have a point but he's a front line guy which is not the position of a strategist.

And you'd think with people like superman's hyper intelligence and others with those abilities batman isn't really as needed as he's portrayed. They use him cause he's popular and they tone down those around him to give him that purpose.

I've always figured the defenders were for big universal level threats whereas the avengers were for worldly threats.
I would love to see a situation where Batman shows up to deliver his big plan and the Flash is like, "Oh, don't worry, Bruce, I've considered every angle thirteen times and come up with the absolute best solution to this situation already."

"And implemented it while I was just telling you this. So fights over, be a dear and clean up will you?"

CCI EXCLUSIVE: Fraction Unravels a Strange Conspiracy in "Defenders"

Sounds really interesting, definitely on board for this.

Love the characters but I'm a bit burned out on Fraction.Immortal Iron Fist was great but it was co-written by Bru.His X-men did nothing for me and Iron Man got really boring so I dropped before the renumbering.

Namor? Good.
Strange? Good.
Surfer? Good.
Iron Fist? Good.

Red She Hulk? Groan.

So should this thread title be changed to "The Defenders"?

Any excitement for this has been completely thrown out the window. Fraction has bored me on 3 consecutive runs now. As much as I love Defenders, I'd rather go with the Aaron/Silvestri Hulk relaunch than this.

Strange's duds in that Defenders pic...is that what he's rocking in New Avengers or is this the debut?

I'll be picking it up. The only things of Fraction's that I grew tired of were his runs on Uncanny X-Men and Thor. But I've been loving his Invincible Iron Man, Mighty Thor, Immortal Iron Fist, Punisher: War Journal, and the Order.

I am very iffy on this.

Fraction USED to be a "must buy" writer for me. I loved IMMORTAL IRON FIST, which he co-wrote with Brubaker - although Brubaker seemed to imply that when it came to things like the other weapons or the immortal cities, it was all Fraction. I enjoyed THE ORDER greatly and INVINCIBLE IRON MAN started off well. His run on PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL was inconsistent but often a guilty pleasure at worst. The problem is he started getting more and more decompressed while at the same time losing any ability to execute almost any area of a story properly. I got bored of his INVINCIBLE IRON MAN due to this and I ditched his first arc on THOR promptly. His FEAR ITSELF is looking like the worst event, as a story, since HOUSE OF M - not only is SIEGE looking better, but frankly, so is SECRET INVASION. WORLD WAR HULK looks like HAMLET in comparison, and while CIVIL WAR was a mess, more tended to happen per issue. I think what happened is the same thing that always happens at Marvel - a writer gets hot, the editors back off and allow him to sink or swim under his own devices, and like with many writers, he sinks without a boat to sail in. This is why Millar and Bendis both went from promising scribes to top selling hacks. Jeph Loeb at least can blame his lack of quality on a terrible tragedy.

On the other hand, Fraction hasn't written Iron Fist in years, and while Dr. Strange was only a guest character in INVINCIBLE IRON MAN, he handled him well. He likely would handle Namor well. And I do like the Defenders. Marvel's last two stabs at this franchise were underwhelming. The "I'M WITH STUPID" mini series in 2003-2004 with the JLI team of Giffen, DeMatteis and Maguire was fine as a comedy routine but didn't work as a story. And Joe Casey's THE LAST DEFENDERS was clearly intended as one installment of a larger story that will remain unfinished. The property hasn't had a proper go at an ongoing series since Busiek and Larson at the top of the 21st century.

So it comes down to whether I return against my better judgment and give a writer who has disappointed me three times in a row a 4th chance. If I offer more mercy and forgiveness than a baseball umpire. I'm undecided for now.

Eh, pass. Once again, that's not the Defenders. If you're gonna do a Defenders relaunch, do it right and get all of the main Defenders in there. :o

If this didn't have Iron Fist in it it'd be a 100% pass... dang it. I'll skim the first issue to see if it's enough to bring me in but it likely will... be being the Iron Fist fan I am. I'll likely get the first few issues at least.

In fairness, most of them are there. Dr. Strange, Hulk, Namor, and Silver Surfer are all "main Defenders". In fact, they're the founders. You're really only missing some of the long term second stringers like Nighthawk, Hellcat, and Valkyrie. The latter is busy in SECRET AVENGERS currently. Nighthawk is in FEAR ITSELF: FEARSOME FOUR. And Hellcat's...actually free.

It does seem as if Fraction had plans for more Iron Fist stuff and then worked backwards to include more characters so Marvel could sell it as a relaunch of another team book.

Well it was said there are members than what's on that cover. So who knows.

Oh, I didn't realize the Hulk was in it. Okay, if it's got the main 4--Strange, the Surfer, Namor, and the Hulk--I'll give it a read. Iron Fist is a nice bonus, but he's sort of canceled out by Red She-B****.

Bump?

DEFENSIVE MEASURES: Fraction's "Defenders" Origins & Expectations

Today, CBR kicks off DEFENSIVE MEASURES, a week-long look at Marvel' upcoming "Defenders" series talking with writer Matt Fraction about the origins of his new series and what readers can expect from it.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=35095

Did I mention this series sounds promising? Can't wait for more info this week.

I was initially going to get this. But now I'm not. I have no real interest in picking up new Marvel books and Fraction really pissed me off with Fear Itself.

Yeah, I've lost faith in Fraction to the extent that I'm not really interested in anything new he writes. The Fearless and Battle Scars get a pass because they're actually scripted by Cullen Bunn and Chris Yost, respectively.
