It's played on foot, as opposed to horseback (the term is from hundreds of years ago). Technically any game played on foot is a kind of football. When most people say football they mean Association Football. When Americans say football they mean American or Gridiron Football. Then there's Rugby Football, Gaelic Football, etc.

Football is just a catchall term for games where you run around a field.

Popular notion, but not entirely true. There are some who do this, but I find most people around here will name the beverage in question by it's real name, least of all I do.
 
People in the south (at least where I'm at) call soda ''soft drinks'' more than calling everything Coke....:confused:

That happens too, but as for most of my life, most anything is simply "a drink".
