Too old, IMO

I don't think his age would be a problem other than the fact that he could die before the third movie would be released. That happened with Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies.

He's 68, over retiring age.

Maybe that would fit with the time of the movie, though... I think that they should attack the angle of newspapers like the Bugle going out of business because of technology, etc, so a dinosaur like him would be fitting. I still think it'd be nice to see a face like Slattery or Laurie join the cast, though. They'd both be wonderful additions.

If anybody was to replace him, I think that Hugh Laurie would be the best choice.

Hugh Laurie would definitely be an interesting choice. Of course, JK Simmons was and still is PERFECT for the role. But if you're staying away from the Raimi movies, Laurie would be great.
