Jack Black as GL? Why god...WHY?!

Here's something special for Whack; my way of easily proving that Jack Black and "zany comedy" do not equal Green Lantern:

Do you understand the concept of Green Lantern? Do you understand that nobody wants to see Green Lantern in Name Only? If the morons at Wb want to make a "zany comedy" with Jack Black, THEY CAN USE SOMETHING OTHER THAN GREEN LANTERN. When moron executives decide to attach the name of an established property to something entirely different, not only is it insulting to the fans, but it is ENEVITABLY BAD. Do I have to mention CINO? What we're talking about is a potential GLINO. Just because YOU think Green lantern is lame doesn't mean the rest of us deserve to see him ruined on screen.

The bottom line is this: Green lantern should not be a comedy about an overweight balding guy because GREEN LANTERN IS NOT A COMEDY ABOUT AN OVERWEIGHT BALDING GUY. It's that simple. That is NOT what Green Lantern is about.

Have you ever read a DC comic before?
Yes, mainly the good ones. So haven't read too much of the Green Lantern stuff. I know he is scared of yellow. Maybe the villain in the movie could be a school bus.

And for the person who said that Jack Black was no Jim Carrey; darn right he's not, Jim Carrey is funny.
Jack Black is one of the most talented people in the industry. And he owns your soul. :O

Complete ownage. That is an entertaining Green Lantern!!! A big suck it, to all the dorks. :)

If you're of the opinion that Green Lantern is a lame character, and that Hollywood might as well make it into a Jack Black comedy vehicle, that's your right. But most of us who are actually GL fans don't want to see that happen, any more than you'd want to see one of your favorite characters warped in that fashion. So how about a little understanding on that point?

If Warners wants to make a superhero comedy, then they should do so, by all means - Plastic Man is a perfect candidate. But there aren't many comic books that lend themselves to a great sci-fi adaptation, and GL is one of them, so let's see that as the basis of a GL film.

Even though im not a GL fan particualry i feel where the fans are coming from on this
I had always imagined a serious Sci-Fi movie for GL not a comedy, how would fans feel about Black being in it as a light hearted GL not the main GL ?
:):)

Sorry, Hunter Rider, didn't mean to ignore you.

To answer your question, I wouldn't mind one or two supporting characters providing some comic relief in a GL film (like the droids do in Star Wars), but I wouldn't want to see Jack Black play any part in it - I'm just not a fan of his.

Haha, I love it. Kid catches feelings about a comic book character. And I bet Saint wonders why he is still a virgin. He gets teary eyed when someone makes fun of a comicbook character. He would even label someone a moron based off opinions on entertainment issues, because that accurately gauges someone's intelligence level. hahaha

Keep the laughs comming. Green Lantern v.s. the color Yellow, in the Live Action Motion Picture.
I'm not surprised you've resorted to spewing bulls*it, because people tend to do that when they have nothing genuine to say. I'm especially amused at how you try to belittle me for insulting you over a movie, while simultaneously insulting me because I like a comic book.

Most amusing of all, however, is how you pretend to be "above the nerds" while arguing with a fleet of them on a comic book movie forum. I accepted the fact that I'm a nerd a long time ago, so calling me one is hardly hurtful. You, though, seem to still be in denial.

and i cant believe some are actually trying to justify this...obviously they have no understanding of the GL concept....and i'm starting to doubt if they're true comic fans

We agree, for once.

I don't like Jim Carrey either.

If you look over at ICv2 News you will see that Green Lantern #10 only sold 7398 copies to distributors. If Green Lantern is a chacarter beloved by millions like you say, then why aren't they buying his comic book? Look its going to take more than 7000 people to pay for an (estimated) $80 million film. I think the studios could care less if they piss you off. They are trying to fill seats in the theaters and sell merchandising. You may call Mr. Black a moron, but he seems to be making movies (8 in the next year) and big $$$ (probably more than you) to be one. If you want to make a difference then start buying more GL comics. Then when you get a fan base as big as a Star Trek say, then you can call some of the shots.

Um...of course GL 10 was gonna sell 7000 in April....because Most of the buyers bought the ish when it came out in march...and in march it was number 8 of 300 comics sold that month:

enough! Debate nicely or more of you will be on probation!

Call me an anti-comic fan all you want. Jack Black would own all kinds of ass as Green Lantern. Or they might go serious with it, and it could be an odd casting ala Michael Keaton in Batman 1989.

I and many others don't feel that Black would "own" as a serious superhero character....and the only comedic ones he should really try are ones that are not already established comic icons.

For him to take on a pre-existing comic character...and try to play it with his physique....would be ridiculous.

instead? Who the hell is saying instead? They could do Wonder Woman, Batman 2, Superman 2, Flash, and Green Lantern. And if any of those should have comedic elements, it's Flash.

All in the same summer?

Wasn't the same said about Keaton? And didn't hepretty much prove otherwise? What does physique have to deal at all with a majestical toy ring? You don't have to be beefy and ripped to recieve a ring that gives you powers.

Fine....let him play one of the alien Lanterns then...his physique fits some of those guys.

I wasn't really impressed with Keaton as Batman. He did better than I expected...but he still wasn't up to what I was looking for in an established character like that.

Keaton LACKED mass--something easily corrected by a rubber suit. Black has too MUCH mass--not correctible by a rubber suit (and Green Lantern should not wear rubber in any case).

As for his physique, the ring takes a tremendous mental AND physical toll on the user--as seen in GL: Rebirth. Aside from having the mental discipline, it's logical to assume one has to be in decent physical shape to withstand the pressure of using it. This is why GL rings are granted only to those who are deemed capable of using them--except in Kyle's case, because there was no choice.

Wasn't up to your standards? Sure... but he pretty much set the standard until Bale came along. I don't see why Black can't do the same, this could be his next serious break through role. He looked convincing when he unleashed his rage in the spider-bit... I'm sure he could pull off a serious role.

Jack's mass has nothing to do with anything, and Keaton still wasn't physically imposing in the suit... and he wasn't big, he wasn't AS convincing as he could have been. But he still did an absolutely fantastic job, he made us believe. The only problem is, Batman needs physical credibility because he is a normal man and doesn't have powers. Jack Black could look the way he does, and still be powerful...cause the power is derived from the lamp and the ring...not from his muscles.

And why couldn't Jack Black believeably take the "physical punishment"? I'm sure it isn't that much punishment. Do they only award the ring to people who have to look like muscle heads?
