I'm sure "From the director of a bunch of Shakespeare adaptations you've never seen" would have worked much better.

Is there an inside joke here? Many people have laughed about that here and is it a reference to something else? Let me guess...Oblivion or Jack Reacher?

Not to the people they are aiming to attract to the film.
Why should we reduce ourselves to a lower standard ? Since when does that should dictate anything in life ?
And who are they aiming ? Complete idiots who never seen anything but Thor and that sort of stuff ? Does anyone dont hear how insane does this sound ? I suppose they are promoting this to normal people , Clancy fans , Ford's franchise fans , etc. Why cant we trust the audience ?
"Well yeah...but they dont know". Then , they should. Or at least , let's educate them.
Dont promote mediocrity. Ever
All those movies are good. You don't promote mediocrity , no matter how much it makes.
You dont promote Scorsese as the guy who made Shutter Island. You dont promote De Niro as the guy who starred in Meet Parents. You promote based on the peoples merits. Brannagh is a fantastic actor and his work with Shakespeare material in cinema is stupendous. That's what you evoke. We have this cool talented guy with us that's going to help us explore Jack Ryan . Not the friggin Thor director , whatever he is called. Its completely disrespectful to his career.
So yeah , it would have worked much better.

When I was little, I was only the lead character at playtime. The green or red ranger, Leonardo, Luke Skywalker, etc.
All those movies are good.![]()
That makes no sense. Money is what advertising is all about. It is an attempt to promote your product and to make as much money as possible. That is what the studios pay for. It makes no sense to not use it as a barometer for what to use.Good or bad , that's not really the point i was making (and Shutter is certainly good). But making money shouldn't be the reference for promotion . I said those guys , but i could have said anyone. These people have built their amazing careers based on their merit and great work in their craft. That's what , at least , we should aim to promote.
Its completely disrespectful to his career.
Maybe he should get on the internet and complain about it.

According to you they are. If they saw Thor for Branagh, if they are going to see Jack Ryan for Branagh, they know he directed both. They don't need to be told. But i dont work for a studio. I understand what you wrote , and why they promote it like this.
I'm part of the audience. If the studio tried to sell me their product as being a quality one , i think it would work better for me. Hey guys , you know the accomplished actor and great Shakespearean voice in film ? That's right , we nabbed him , he stars and we hope he brings some of his sensibilities to our project as a director.
But if you noticed it , they dont even say his name. It's really , hey guys , you know the Thor movie ? That's right , this one is directed by the same guy . Go see it.
And i never agree with the extremely condescending vision people have regarding the audiences. They ain't dumb.
That hurts Spidey. Wounded.I find the complaint about Thor being used in the trailer strange. Jack Ryan is a wannabe big blockbuster action/spy film starring a hot young star so they use the director's LAST big action movie starring a hot young star to market the film. Of course they aren't going to use his older smaller films that nobody saw and that are in a completely different genre. That would be a stupid thing to do.
I don't like Thor either so this isn't a defense of that film. I will join you in the proper thread in a discussion about the film's faults. So I'll admit that "from the director of Thor" is a turn off for me but not for most movie goers.
