James Bond: 007 - Spectre - - Part 11

Reasons why I think TND is better than Goldeneye:
* TND is quintessentially classic Bond, whereas Goldeneye feels more like True Lies and Mission: Impossible

* Elliot Carver is the best James Bond villain since Blofeld, and Jonathan Pryce dwarfs Sean Bean in terms of star power and stature (and Bean is not an insignificant name by any means)

* Michelle Yeoh and Teri Hatcher have equal 'screen presence', whereas Goldeneye is dominated by Famke Janssen as Xenia Onnatopp

Reasons why I think TWiNE is better than Goldeneye:
* It gives the pre-Craig version of Bond his "Vesper" moment

* We get a far better sense of who Dench's old!M is than we did in Goldeneye

* James and Moneypenny go back to their classic interactions

* Robert Carlyle

* Denise Richards' Christmas Jones is a more interesting character than Izabella Scorupco's Natalya Simonova

* Robbie Coltrane's Valentin Zukovsky has a far bigger role in TWiNE than he does in Goldeneye, which automatically makes TWiNE better just because of how awesome that character is

* John Cleese

* A ski chase sequence

The competition for that title isn't exactly stiff so it's not saying much. It's sad that Brosnan peaked with his first Bond movie and it was a steep downhill slope for him ever since.

It is legitimately a great Bond film though. Not just 'great for Brosnan.'

I wasn't disputing that. Just that saying it is Brosnan's best is not an admirable title to have when 3 out of his 4 movies range from below average to awful.

Jonathan Pryce as Elliot Carver was better, and a bigger 'name'.

I must have missed the memo where an actor's "name" makes them automatically better. By that standard Julian Glover was better than Joseph Wiseman.

I really don't find Carver that great of a villain, I mean yeah the key idea of a Rupert Murdock style media based villain is interesting, but his scheme was basically a repeat of Blofeld's plot in YOLT, or Stromberg in TSWLM, or Hugo Drax in MR. Compare that to 006 who is a Bond villain that is not only a great personal foe, but arguably the smartest. He was one of the few villains who knew the classic tricks of the series-because he had used them all himself. That to me is infinitely more interesting than a half-baked idea delivered in an incredibly hammy way.

Carver's not even the second best Brosnan villain. Both Trevelyan and Elektra easily out class him. So does Xenia Onatopp. Heck Vincent Schiavelli's two minute cameo as Dr. Kaufman was more entertaining than Carver.

006 is easily my favorite villain of all the Bond films, just because "evil James Bond" gives you so much to work with. He's a smart, physical, and extremely compelling villain, with the personal side of his antagonism with Bond strong enough to warrant all sorts of the usual villainous flaws that you're supposed to expect. Both he and Bond can't just shoot each other, and neither can really shut up when fighting; that nasty and hilariously petty grin he gives before stomping on Bond's hand on the satellite's ladder feels more real and sincere than anything we see from I'd say 90% of Bond villains.

And there's just something so satisfying about "No, Alec. For me." First, Bond's reflexive catch does a great job of showing the audience the connection the two agents had, and the sheer coldness of the line fits with the now freshened feeling of betrayal.

It's fun to compare Silva and Trevlyn to each other; both are Evil Bonds, but from radically different perspectives. Silva's the "Bond as a ruthless and emotionally stunted tool of the government" gone rogue, while Trevlyn is more "Bond as the suave patriot, smart ass, and heroic super spy" twisted. Silva is a bit of a tragic monster with a fairly sad end, and his relationship with Bond is fairly professional and with more than a bit of admiration for 007, with him leaving Bond alive repeatedly because of this admiration and because it fits his plans. Trevlyn, meanwhile, shows just how much of an ********* Bond is when stripped of his virtues, and with Bond, it's all about personal competition and one-up-manship. Silva gets defeated because he's got tunnel vision away from Bond, while Trevlyn dies because he's got tunnel vision towards Bond.

Scaramanga's easily the closest Moore's Bond got an evil twin, and it really is a shame we didn't get a great movie to go with him.

Silva sucked.

I like Goldeneye and give it a ranking of 9 out of 10, but it doesn't hold a candle to Tomorrow Never Dies, For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, and Licence to Kill, all of which are perfect James Bond films for me and deservedly get rankings of 10 out of 10.

If you guys had to rank Goldeneye among just the Craig films what films would it be above or below?

Below QoS (9.5), even with CR (9), and above Skyfall (7*).

* I gave Skyfall a 7 just to be nice, but could have easily gone as low as a 5

I am fan of Brosnan as bond.my favorate bond after Connery.

Goldeneye was his best but unlike some i love the world is not enough
Denise richards was miscast but she doesn't ruin film for me.

Spectre is only craig bond film I love.I would place TND ahead of other craig films.even i say DAD Isn't one of best bond films but i have DAF as worst
bond film despete Connery in it.

I would have it just below Casino Royale (CR is my #4 Bond movie, GE my #5), but above the rest.

Alec Trevelyan is my all time favourite Bond villain. My favourite aspects of the Bond mythos are always those that have a personal element and I always gravitate towards those with an element of tragedy. It helps that Sean isn't hamming it up. There's an element of condemned man to it. He knows Bond's history and success rate, he knows it's likely a losing battle towards the end.

ranked against the Craig films I place Goldeneye like this:

Casino Royale/Goldeneye
Skyfall
Spectre
Quantum

Goldeneye was my first Bond film, and even after seeing them all it remains quite possibly my favorite in the franchise.

Craig was on the nerdist podcast. Great interview! Matt being a fangirl over Bond was funny to hear.

Casino Royale is my #1 Bond film by far, and one of my favorite action films ever. Golden Eye is probably my #2 Bond film. Interesting that Martin Campbell's Bonds was always the best in the series, i.e. best Brosnan and Craig too. He should do the first instalment of the new Bond as well. :ilv:

I haven't seen Spectre yet, but I liked QoS much more than Skyfall (imo Skyfall is really weak movie) and from what I've read so far, Spectre is even more boring than Skyfall, so Mendes *****ed up two Craig's Bonds... :-/

I actually enjoyed SPECTRE more than Skyfall for the most part. But would say Skyfall is the better movie overall.

I've always wonder how M and Tanner were tracking Bond's movements during the opening chase in Skyfall.:confused: I assumed Bond had a chip in his arm, ala CR but if he did, how did they not know he was alive for 5 months, when they thought Moneypenny had killed him...?

This might get me some eye-rolls and outraged reactions, but I'd really like to see an American actor be given the chance to play James Bond in an official capacity, with my Top 2 choices being Lee Pace and Matthew Morrison, both of whom are currently 36 years old and both of whom have previous experience successfully affecting British-type accents (see Thranduil and playwright James M. Barrie, respectively).
