Finally got round to seeing Spectre.
Overall I liked it. The acting was top notch throughout, and Craig seems to have relaxed (even more) into the role and character than in previous films. The score was good, cinematography excellent, and there were some superb set pieces such as the car chase through Rome.
I don't think the storyline had quite the same emotional impact as Skyfall, despite this one supposedly being based around the notion of Bond/Blofeld as step-brothers in a way. I think part of that stemmed from the dialogue they wrote for Blofeld; almost every line uttered by Waltz was done so in a calm, cold and calculated way. I'd liked to have seem him (or Bond) get a little emotional; after all, this is the man whose presence led him to murder his own father and indirectly set his path for life, leading to the formation of Spectre. I think Blofeld losing his temper and showing some some of the seething hatred he has for Bond might have helped deliver some of that emotion.
Skyfall was a little shorter than Spectre, though both still clock in at well over 2hrs. Nevertheless, Skyfall to me feels like a more condensed film. I think there were too many location pieces in Spectre and it felt slightly overlong; they could probably have reduced these and condensed the film into a more intense package about 15-20 mins shorter than what we got.
I must add, I loved Hinx as a villain. Physically imposing and memorable, his brutal fight scene with Bond on the train was one of the few times in the film where I genuinely could believe Bond was outmatched and in danger. Indeed, if not for Swann, he would have been dead. Hinx seemingly fell to his death but given his size and resilience (he shrugged off a gunshot wound to the arm like it was nothing, not to mention being ejected throught the front window of the Range Rover), it wouldn't be a shock if he survived somehow. I'd like to see him as a recurring villain much like how Jaws used to pop up in the Roger Moore films; an imposing killer for hire with a personal grudge because of his unfinished business against Bond.
My one and major gripe with Spectre wasn't really to do with Spectre at all, it was more to do with the overall arc of the last 4 films. In Casino Royale, Bond fell hook, line and sinker for Vesper Lynd and submitted his resignation to M. Of course, by the end of the film she's dead and he's back working for Mi6. In Quantum of Solace, M has Bond arrested for disobeying orders. In Skyfall, Bond again 'leaves' his job (by pretending to be dead for 3 months) only to return to London when Mi6 HQ is attacked. And in Spectre, the film seemingly ends with Bond leaving his job again.
It just seems slightly out of sync to me that a character who's so seemingly dedicated to serving his Queen & country should effectively resign/retire 3 times in the course of 4 films. And that when he's asked by Swann would he happen if he left, he should already know the answer as he's done it twice before. It also loses any impact as I'm sure we all fully believe that he'll be back working for Mi6 in the next film anyway.
