Talking about Scaramanga, I actually had this crazy idea of a sorta remake of tMwtGG where in a crazy twist, Scaramanga is actually a patsy and the person who supposedly is Nick Nack turn out to be Scaramanga- played by of course Peter Dinklage.

I thought he was a good henchman, so I agree.

I think Max Von Sydow could've been a good Blofeld in an official movie. He certainly had presence as him in NSNA.

Waltz's Blofeld seemed a bit lightweight. Instead of talking about all the evil things he's supposedly done to ruin Bond's life, they should've shown us some real ruthlessness in this movie and made him very threatening. It was more tell rather than show in the end.

And I hope Sam Smith never writes another Bond theme. I'm not sure I can think of anything worse. Sure, Jack White and Alicia Keys wasn't pleasant to listen to, but at least the instrumental version had more of an edge. Smith's song belongs in a musical as a female ballad.
I thought Max, like everything in NSNA, was pretty bad. It's a shame because he's such a talented actor, but his scenes really made the character of Blofeld seem like a joke when in the novel and the EON film they introduced him in such a brilliant and terrifying way.

Plus he kind of looked like a muppet with that haircut he had going on.

whilst an interesting idea, it's been done before in other films and would seem too obvious. Ofcourse if they handed it well, could be brilliant.

Apparently he wrote the song in 20 mins and to me, it shows. It sounds bland and uninspired.

My personal favourite Bond song is You Know My Name by Chris Cornell, which was the Casino Royale song. I'm a Cornell fan anyway but I felt that his song knocked it out of the park and suited the tone and story in Casino Royale perfectly. Cornell was shown a rough cut of CR before writing his song and spent a month just thinking about his approach before he ventured into writing the lyrics.

My personal favorite is Nobody Does It Better by Carly Simon. Just the perfect anthem for the Bond character in general.

It is hard to pick an all-time favourite Bond theme. For the most part, the music from the last 5 Bond movies has been very good IMO. I really liked the music from Die Another Day, CR, QOS and Skyfall. I thought the music for Spectre was ok, but not great and a big step down from the others that I mentioned.

I wouldn't have minded Cornell again. His style would've suited a film like Spectre. At least he's more thoughtful than Smith who thought he could just churn something out quickly and be done. Sometimes your first idea isn't going to be your best and you'll have to stick it in a box for later use for something else.

Chris Cornell would have been symbolic of the chapter ending - allowing a new story arc or reboot or whatever to begin. A missed opportunity.

Cornell's Bond song was amazing, as was the movie.

It's funny. The first few times that I watched Casino Royale, I loved it. When I re-watched it before going to see Spectre, I found it to be boring for large parts. I wonder will something similar happen with Skyfall. Also, I think QOS is underrated. It's the weakest Craig movie, but it is ok IMO. It is not terrible like people make it out to be.

I agree. It's my favorite Bond song also.

That would have been a fantastic way to close out Craig's run. Very inspired idea, Vaibow.

A title like Spectre is so ominous and foreboding, and requires a song with a real edge to it and maybe some aggression. A song that is bland and insipid and completely whiny like Smith's is totally unsuitable. I have never seen the title sequence look so dead and dragging on.

Imagine if he were writing the actual James Bond theme song and he came up with this instead of the thing by Monty Norman.

The crazy thing is literally everything in the song could have remained the same with the exception of Sam Smith's voice and it would have been a much better song. A harder, stronger voice would have made it worthy for most of us.

Not everything could remain the same. It needed better instrumentation. More drums and build in the 2nd verse and chorus. The dynamics stayed pretty much the same throughout the song. It felt like it was building towards something, but it never came. A complete anti-climax throughout.

You're right. When I watched the film again, it felt weird that there was no bridge in the song. After the second verse, there's an instrumental and then cuts to the chorus before ending. It was a bit weird.

"Skyfall" has that fantastic bridge in tandem with the inverted color sequence in the opening credits.

Choosing Sam Smith stinks of just jumping on a band wagon and trying to make a PC statement.

'let's go for someone hot right now'

"sure... how about sam smith, he's gay too, that will tick boxes"

'yeah, we will look so progressive and people will love it as a bold move'

I would rather they just go for who submits the best song... so much talent out there, regardless of their gender, race of sexuality.

If they wanted someone gay, at least they could've gotten a singer who would write a better, more aggressive song which wasn't so whiney. Next we'll be getting Mika doing a Bond song in the style of Grace Kelly.

They hedged their bets on Adele returning, but she didn't want any of it. Personally I think it should have been Lana Del Rey to do the song.

And yet Smith's song was the first Bond song to reach no. 1 in UK. Listeners must have poor taste. Or they were all fan girls who wanted a boy singing an angst-ridden, emo love song rather than a proper Bond song.

Can't blame the people of the UK for the song wining a Golden Globe and its Oscar nomination. The people in Hollywood must have loved it.

That would have been good. He wouldn't have been the first singer to do a second Bond song (Shirley Bassey did 3).

What I love most about You Know My Name (asides from that catchy title which gives perfect credence to an iconic Bond line uttered in every 007 film) is when you listen to it loud through a set of good headphones, and you can pick out all the little bits from the main 007 theme which are scattered into it. So even though it comes as across as a slightly grander rock song and sounds suitably distant from the more orchestral 007 theme, you can detect the shared aural DNA - like two distant cousins who look alike.

Cornell and David Arnold really put a lot of thought into it.

I totally agree, but unfortunately the Bond films have now become so big that they require massive investment - Spectre was the most expensive ever and cost upwards of $300m. Hence why they have 17 product placements in the film (higher than ever before), and probably also a reason they go for a singer who's popular at that particular time - more chance of higher numbers watching the music video which always contains film footage and is basically a glorified advertisement.

It's been a financial exercise on many occasions, which is a shame as the theme song should really be about the film's meaning. I was surprised as anyone when Cornell got his shot, he may be very popular but he's far from mainstream and wasn't someone who was pulling in all the teenage fans in massive numbers - yet his song hit all the right notes and is a perfect example of why they shouldn't always go with who's hot right now.

Radiohead wrote a song for Spectre too which ultimately wasn't chosen, whilst I'm not a huge fan of the song itself it would have been interesting to compare the reaction to it to Sam Smith's, given that Radiohead are taken very seriously on most musical levels. They're not trendy in a Sam Smith way, but their peers and fans think highly of them.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if the next theme tune is by Bieber or One Direction. 1D's 'hiatus' should be over just when the next film is coming out, it's a marketing team's wet dream :D

Bieber Bond song?

Where is this Radiohead Spectre song? Has it be released?
