Was watching a reaction from Blind Wave to Top Gun: Maverick last night, and it just solidified to me that Joseph Kosinski absolutely needs to direct this film.
His filming style isn’t totally incongruous with Man of Steel, but it definitely has less of a dour color palette that would very much benefit and suit the direction I would like to see Superman go in. Still a bit grounded and lived in, but definitely much warmer and brighter, very sunrise/sunset, bright blue skies and “magic hour” type stuff. He can do both hopeful and optimistic, funny/cheesy and heartfelt/tragic tones really well. Clark Kent/Superman is a bit of a dork, so the film shouldn’t be afraid to be a little corny and comic book-y at times. He would absolutely nail the flying sequences, and he can execute really entertaining, intense action. Plus, we would actually get a believable romance and good chemistry between Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, and Clark Kent/Superman could feel like an actual person this time around.
Also, bring on Christopher McQuarrie as the writer, and Hans Zimmer can come back to work his magic. Maybe he can bring a bit of that Top Gun flair and inject some of that style into the score for this film. Still keep a lot of the same themes, but definitely make it a bit more synth-y, less war drum-y, a bit slower and more triumphant/hopeful.
Have this film act as a soft-reboot and just call it Superman. Really drive home that they’re going in a different direction for this version of the character and his universe to differentiate it from Snyder’s version.
That’s where I’m most curious to see if he emulates Feige’s approach to selecting directors. Unexpected lesser-known directors, or more known commodities?Alright who do you guys think Gunn will get to direct this?
Himself.Alright who do you guys think Gunn will get to direct this?
I'd love to say not himself, but, himself.Alright who do you guys think Gunn will get to direct this?
Too serious, I can't see his vision fitting into Gunn's.Denis Villenueve because why not?
Alfonso Cuaron is my absolute favorite working director. He can direct anything and make it one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
I don't think he's interested in superheroes though.
Because he actively and vocally hates the superhero genre.Denis Villenueve because why not?

I mean, the fact that he doesn’t have it earmarked to direct himself right off the bat says that maybe he won’t. I imagine that getting this whole endeavor started is the most important thing, and taking on all the duties of director while still getting the ball rolling could end up proving a distraction.I'd love to say not himself, but, himself.
I hope you're right. I just feel like they haven't made it official because officially, there's no movie to direct yet. Once they agree on a script and budget, I expect they'll make it official, unless Saffran & Co. don't like his script. He still does have people to answer to at the end of the day.I mean, the fact that he doesn’t have it earmarked to direct himself right off the bat says that maybe he won’t. I echo your sentiments and put it better than I ever could.I'd like to see the Daniels direct (Everything Everywhere All at Once). I think it'd be really fresh, fun, creative, deep, etc.
As much as I want to see aspects of classic Supes return, I feel like a lot of other directors could end up veering into generic, Donner-esque territory, believing it's the logical 'correction' for the Snyder Supes. I don't want to see Superman get the Ron Howard Solo treatment, solid, but thoroughly unexciting.
I want something that feels just as fresh as Snyder's version, but in the opposite direction, as zany and unpredictable as Morisson's runs, with the modernness of Landis' American Alien. And so, I'd want directors who make some of the most exciting cinema now to bring that to life.
James Gunn himself, the Duffer Brothers, as well as Taika Waititi (heresy, I know) are other names that would get me excited.
I feel he's telling the truth somewhat when he says "They don't know who's directing yet" but most likely it's gonna be him, it's probably gonna be mostly up to whether or not he has enough time to do so. Because in the past he's talked about how he far prefers to direct his own scripts as the final product can stick to his own vision.I hope you're right. If it's truly NOT gonna be him, I need him to hire someone who has enough wholesomeness in their resume to counteract his inherent cynicism and mean-spiritedness if I'm gonna have any faith in this. So, like, Paul King or Travis Knight, basically.
