Matt Damon Confirms Next Bourne Movie to Start Filming Fall 2015

Source: E! News
November 8, 2014

Matt Damon has confirmed a recent report that he will return for a fifth installment in the Bourne franchise, to again be directed by Paul Greengrass.

Talking to E! News along with Ben Affleck (upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), the two gave an update.

"Well, [Damon's] going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I've just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness. So...," Affleck said.

Damon added that "it'll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. [Director] Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that's all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes."

It was previously reported that the new film will take the July 15, 2016 release date originally assigned to a different Bourne sequel. That film, a big screen follow-up to The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner in the lead, will remain in development for release at another time

I love the Greengrass/Damon Bourne team, but...their trilogy was perfect. I feel like it would be wisest to leave it be, and I thought they both felt that way, but I know, money talks, yada yada. It's just gonna get awkward with the Renner situation.

That said, am I gonna see this one opening day? You betcha. :D

Huh...Similar to my feelings on Toy Story 4: the trilogy ended so perfectly I think it's silly to even come back and create a new one.

I just hope it's good

Almost feel bad for Renner. Dude cannot start a decent solo franchise

Well, Greengrass didn't direct The Bourne Identity, so, in a way, this is him finishing his trilogy.

Why is Damon so insistant that it has to be Greengrass?
What's wrong with Doug Liman?

Maybe Damon thinks, like me, that Greengrass is the better director and that his Bourne movies are better than Liman's one.

I've been hoping for this since I walked out of Ultimatum. Great ending to the trilogy but I always felt there was more to tell. Seeing Greengrass come back to this after Captain Phillips will be a treat, that movie was great too.

Doug Liman hasn't been associated with the series since the first movie, and that was in 2002. While I appreciate that Doug did the first film, it was Greengrass who cemented Bourne into pop culture. Doug has since moved on, and is talented in his own right, especially after Edge of Tomorrow.

Also, Greengrass has a working relationship with Damon for years; including not just the Bourne movies, but also Green Zone. You can argue that they're friends. I don't know if Damon even knows Liman personally for him to vouch for him.

Doug Liman had issues with the studio on the first film.

It is probably because of Greengrass that Damon wants to return to the franchise.

So goodbye to Aaron Cross

Or we can do a team-up.
The majority does not want that. I know for sure I don't want that.

There is a reason they are paying the big bucks to bring the duo back. Because Legacy failed.

I wouldn't go that far. I wouldn't mind seeing Cross' redemption as a character. I don't think Renner did a bad job at all, but he just didn't have a whole lot to work with. But I don't see where all this anger is coming from, steaming from Bourne fans.

I don't hate Cross. I watched Legacy because of Weisz, but I do not hate anything about it. The problem with Legacy is how apathetic it makes me feel. It feels so direct to video in its premise and executions. I just don't care what happens. That is such a huge step back from Bourne, where there is a tension throughout.

Universal tried to do it without Damon and without Jason Bourne and it failed miserably.

They are simply trying to salvage the franchise now.

Bourne Legacy is the Tokyo Drift installment of the franchise.

Damon and Greengrass never closed the book on returning before. Even at the end of the Ultimatum commentary, Greengrass said about Bourne, "You might need him again someday."

Clearly both actor and director work well together and like working on these movies together. For Damon, this is basically his big ticket franchise and he knows that. The movies got better as they went along because of Greengrass so that is why he probably likes them so much.

The people who aren't into Greengrass' style don't understand, the first movie had a rather chaotic production process. Behind-the-scenes, Liman was having issues with the studio. For Damon, it wasn't a very positive experience based on some of his interviews. However, the film became a sleeper hit and was a massive success on home video. Plus the addition of someone like Greengrass, who he is very much likely on a similar political and philosophical wavelength with encouraged him to return. My guess is he is not a big fan of working with Liman.

The duo of Greengrass and Damon really made the franchise what it is.

Tokyo Drift at least started something in terms of the creative. Legacy doesn't even have that.

I'm aware that Liman directed the first one. When I said "their trilogy," I meant the trilogy that they were both associated with, as opposed to that other installment we don't need to talk about. And Bourne Supremacy was no trilogy starter - it was pure "middle part" - so they finished their trilogy, imo. But like I said, I'm there opening day regardless, as I love their installments the most.

i wanted to continue seeing pamela's retribution, as well as bourne getting together with nicky. i think it was dumb how legacy undid every accomplishment pamela made though. i would love if bourne 5 just retconned legacy out

Somehow I don't see them pretending Legacy doesn't exist. I feel like an announcement of Renner's involvement in this one could be imminent. Though, it seems like this announcement wasn't intended to be made yet (Affleck's the one who let it slip first), so it might be a while before they have all their pieces in place to make any official announcements.
