Jason Bourne

Does this mean it's a slow paced film? Or just all over the place?

More all over the place. I just thought Supremacy and Ultimatum had amazing pacing. Ultimatum especially. It had this nonstop energy that kept revving and took you on a ride. This one not so much.

I don't think they made a bad movie. They just hit a double instead of a homerun this time.

It's tough because Greengrass' movies got better than the previous one each time. This one is a bit diminished. Also, it completely ignores the events of Bourne Legacy. On one hand I understand, on the other hand, I'm disappointed none of the significant turning points are addressed.

Was what happened to Landy even mentioned?

That sucks. She was such a big part of the series.

How was the big Las Vegas chase sequence they were hyping?

It's a pretty big sequence. It gets a good chunk of time. Lots of cars and likely people get smashed.

How would you say it measures up to the other chases in the series?

IMHO, it's not as good as car pinball in Bourne Supremacy or the fun, creative mini-cooper chase with that famous techno song from Identity. It's a good car chase but it was a bit more like a Michael Bay chase scene.

I'm afraid this film didn't do anything for me and that's coming in as a fan of the Bourne trilogy.

I am seeing it tomorrow. Can't wait! Big fan of the trilogy and I'm sure I will enjoy it :)

That's a pity. I'll still see it, but my expectations are lowered.

The film really just feels terribly redundant. It retreads a lot of old ground and gives Bourne a thin objective for the sake of having another film, except it's far less interesting. There's a couple of neat action scenes that go on a tad too long (the pacing is an issue) and the script is quite weak. It has some terribly cliched lines at times and a couple scenes seemed rather beat for beat of some of the previous films. The formula shows in full force with this film and not for the better.

Overall it all just feels a bit forced and contrived. We got the closure we needed in Ultimatum, anything else after the fact is just noise in this. I left the theater feeling quite unfulfilled, where as each Bourne film bar Legacy left with me a resounding "**** yeah!" feeling.

Seeing this bad boy tonight. Going in with lowered expectations but overall just looking for an entertaining film. With these Bourne films, the plots are convoluted anyway and its more about seeing Damon be a badass. Just give me exotic locations, some tense cat and mouse chase scenes and a good hand to hand combat scene in tradition with the series and I'll be happy. :)

Sounds like the summer of disappointment continues.

Killing off Nicky, especially that early on, was just shockingly dumb. Not only is Greengrass retreading his own ideas (killing off Marie in Supremacy), but it's even more meaningless here. And yeah, so much for potentially delving into that backstory between her and Bourne that they hinted at throughout Ultimatum. Also none of the new characters (who are played by great actors like TLJ, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, etc) are all that interesting. As also stated above, the human element that we got with characters like Marie, or Nicky, or even Pamela Landy (BTW them not mentioning/elaborating on what happened to her here at all was another big disappointment imo) is simply not present here. Nor is the plot or Bourne's part in it nearly as tight or compelling as it was before.

Basically it comes across like a vastly inferior retread of what happened before.

7/10 seemed like it wanted to be three things. A Bourne film that mostly wraps a lot up, a Bourne film that opens new doors, and a tech thriller. No time given to any to truly make it stand out. Basically it's a sub par film because it tried to be too many things and never stood out as any one thing. With more focus it could have been better.

Regarding Nicky:

Like beat for beat, her death almost happens the exact same way it happened for Marie in Supremacy. It was an odd rehash for Greengrass.

Yeah I mean I was shocked at HOW much they rehashed it, even visually. And at least Marie's death, and I totally get why some didn't like that either, served and actual easily-defined purpose in the story. This, didn't.

I liked the film, particularly the first 45 minutes ([BLACKOUT]Nicky's death hurt, but I'm not THAT beat up about it[/BLACKOUT]), but I think that it really struggles to conjure up enough story to justify its own existence, followed by sequel baiting at the end without having earned the need for more films.

I still thought much of the direction, editing, acting, and action was on point, but the film definitely coasts a bit too much on familiar thrills without having major story wrinkles to back up this return. The action is nice, but Bourne has always been about story-driven action, particularly in Supremacy and Ultimatum. In turn, it's not as big a step up from Legacy as I might've wanted (where there's a story, but that story is fairly stupid - see: "I NEED MY CHEMS"). It IS a step (or several) up in my eyes though.

Regardless, I enjoyed the film and was thoroughly entertained by some of the action set-pieces/sequences throughout its running time. I might even watch it again, given the chance.

Overall, I think it's a decent film.

I haven't read any of the Bourne books by Ludlum, but didn't the series continue with another author? If so, why wasn't one of those stories adapted for film - or were the books just too awful?

From what I've heard, the books are typical airport book fare, i.e. not very good, and the films are so different that it'd be hard to faithfully adapt any of those stories.

Admittedly, I'm not that well-informed on this subject, so maybe somebody else knows a little better.

I felt pretty much the same about as this. I even gave it the same score.

Here's my official review of Jason Bourne.

In boxing or MMA terms, it felt like Greengrass and Damon had ring rust here.
