I have to say...from a narrative standpoint and what I'd want to see from a Ghostbusters 3, I'm iffy on the teens aspect but I am keeping an open mind and will wait to see what they do with it.
On the other hand, I think from a socio-political angle..since let's face it, ignoring the 2016 film and reinstating the original continuity was going to cause amount of backlash (as Jones' tweet already shows), casting mixed gender kids as leads could actually help mitigate some of that. I think it'll be a bit harder for people to go after a film with young actors as leads without making themselves look kind of bad in the process. And I think it's important to reinforce the point that, for the vast majority of people it wasn't the fact that people weren't on board with female ghostbusters. It was that rebooting the property felt unnecessary when the soft reboot option was staring them right in the face. It could've went a long way in pleasing a lot more people if we got an extension of that original universe (and the film was actually good). Unfortunately, the ugliest voices in that conversation became the loudest and the whole thing is just a mess.
I sincerely hope the new film can manage to bring people together. It really sucks that it's easy to spin a "people hated the women version so they're bringing back the MEN to clean this up" narrative from this whole thing, and that's all a lot of people will see, but it's more nuanced than that. The film industry can be brutal, you can't just expect a studio to lose money on a $140 million dollar movie and hand out sequels, nor can you expect them to NOT make one last attempt to revive the property and utilize it's built-in nostalgia factor. That's just the way it is. You can be cynical about it, but this could've easily happened just the same way if the 2016 reboot was all-male and was equally poorly received. I just wish everything didn't have to turn into a political firestorm. Getting mad about this so prematurely is actually giving those rotten people exactly what they want. I'm sure it's tough for Leslie considering all the abhorrent stuff she had to deal with.
Like I always say, she and the cast deserved a better film. It's unfortunate that it didn't work out. But hey, if this new movie revives the Ghostbusters brand, who knows what may be possible down the line?
