Planet of the Apes has one of the most culturally remembered endings of all time. Even Burton tried to re-create it with the 2001 movie and failed. I'd say that makes it on par with the pop culture of the 70-80s.
If Rodenberry had followed that idea, we'd never have gotten TNG. It still was about a group of Federation explorers on a star vessel. New uniforms but still had tricorders, teleporters, and phasers. It didn't need Kirk or Spock kids showing up in the first episode. Fans could just believe whatever they wanted about what happened to the original crew.
It just updated the concepts and moved forward with a new crew.
That's what I think Feig is doing, except for being in a new world. The original crew kept on Ghostbusting in their world until they stopped or whatever we'd like to believe.
I could have gone the rest of my life without knowing Indiana Jones got old and had an out-of-wedlock son.t:
Bones was in the pilot episode of Star Trek Tng. So yes it did need to let the audience know that it was tied to the original series. Even the new Star Trek film had to have Spock and let the audience know that it was a change in timeline but still linked to the original.
If they had one of the girls be Venkman and Dana's daughter and they just had a 5 minute cameo. Then that would be enough to link this with the original. They could then carry on and do what ever they wanted and most people would be happy. The fact that they won't or that the original cast are not interested is worrying.
We loved the original cast and characters. For them to come along and say they never existed is playing with our emotions. It works for some characters like Sherlock and Dracula because they have been around for over 100 years and have had numerous makeovers. This is different and is not an adaption of a book.
