Jeffrey Wright IS Commissioner Gordon

We've talked Se7en inspired visuals, how about Se7en inspired wardrobes?

hell yes! the aesthetic being similar would be great.

Honestly, I'd really prefer if they stay away from Somerset's wardrobe for this. First off, it is really similar to how Snyder and Wilkinson dressed J.K. Simmons as Gordon in Justice League with the hat and the crisp, clean small collar trench coat and tie. It is more fitting for an older Gordon and I would like a fresh take.

In accordance with the younger Batman we are getting, I'd like a bit more of a rough and tumble looking Gordon. A look that says he is in the trenches of the war on crime and a man of action. I'd really like something like the BTAS Gordon - a Trench Coat with a big popped up storm collar (in classic noir fashion), with a loose tie and shirt with rolled up sleeves underneath. I kinda want Gordon to look like he is sleeping at the office:

Fair point on Simmons, and I was thinking the same thing after I posted it, but besides the fedora, the looks aren't that different from one another. It just comes down to how he wears them.

What I like about Somerset's wardrobe is how lived in it feels. Partly because of his age, but these look like clothes that have been in his wardrobe for years. There's an unpretentiousness to them I like.

Also worth noting that Wright is only four years younger than Freeman was when he filmed Se7en.

Mills could be another influence. With his sports themed ties, and leather trench, his clothes seem more like a formality. I seem to recall him having a bunch of pre-tied neckties at his disposal.

I can see Morgan Freeman playing Gordon in the 90’s. Se7en is supposedly a big influence so it wouldn’t surprise me if Reeves has been patterning his Gordon after Somerset. I mean, even down to race. Remember, reports were that Mahershala Ali was his original choice. Who else watched him play detective Wayne Hayes in True Detective season 3? I personally think he’s too tall for the character (he’s the perfect pick for Blade). But he nailed a 40 year old detective and a aged detective as well (in his 70’s). At times it reminded me of Freeman in Se7en. Jeffrey Wright is closer to the source material than Ali IMO. He’s in his 50’s like Somerset. Somerset was quite depressive and negative. Weary is an understatement. But when he was on the job, he still had maximum focus and energy for the case. Obsessive.

The Batman could be like i Somerset before Mills showed up. Before retirement was an option. Instead of going down the path we see in Fincher’s movie...Batman shows up and gives Gordon a reason to continue his career for many years to come. It’s the partner he always wanted.

I think '90s Morgan Freeman could have played Gordon.

He would have been an awesome Gordon! If I remember correctly, I remember way back in the Batman Begins pre-production days that he was rumored for it.

Somerset's wardrobe reinforces his restrained and methodical nature. He's too classy and smooth for Gordon. I imagine Gordon to be a bit disheveled, at times on hotheaded side.

I can see him having more utilitarian approach to clothes. Something that works. Not terribly concerned with looking presentable.

Extremely well said. My thoughts are very similar, except I'm not sure I'd say Gordon should be "hotheaded". Hotheaded is more how I would describe Bullock or Flass, cops whom Gordon is often shown as holding back and chastising for their impulsiveness. I would describe Gordon as more dynamic and "take charge" as opposed to Somerset's reserved demeanour. I would guess we are still on the same page on that?

I completely agree that Gordon should disheveled and his clothes very lived in. He is a workaholic and should like we don't know the last time he was home (hence his disintegrating marriage) or possibly even slept. To me, the perfect model for his sense of dress around the office would be Captain Cragen from Law & Order (in particular how he dressed as the original captain on the original Law&Order series in the 1990s):

Jacket off, shirt sleeves rolled up, suspenders, loosened tie, with gun and badge on his hips. If the movie is in fact set in an alternate 2021, I think Gordon's ties should be wide and he should wear fuller, pleated trousers as was the style in the mid-00s. Given his age and profession, I'd think that Gordon has had most of his wardrobe a long time as he does not have time to shop and keep up with the latest fashions. The Cragen look is also very suitable considering we now know that Wright's Gordon appears to be bald.

(The Batman's costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, took a similar approach when designing the costumes for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Because that movie was set in 1974, she dressed younger characters like Cumberbatch's Guillam and Hardy's Ricky Tarr in current 1970s trends, while dressing older characters like Oldman's Smiley in suits that reflected trends in the 1960s. The idea being that middle-aged Smiley would have kept his suits that long and would be most comfortable in the trends and styles that he wore as a younger man.)

Yeah, perhaps hotheaded is a wrong word. Dynamic definitely fits better.

Very good observation of him being a workaholic and not having time to update his wardrobe on regular basis. d

Am I crazy or did the idea of Gordon being an Iconic Redhead only become a big talking point after they cast a black dude in the role? Gordon was typically silver-haired in the comics barring year one era stories up until New 52.
“I guess Oldman’s acting was okay, but not giving him red hair was a real missed opportunity” - something I have absolutely never read on the Hype.

i'm more upset that live action alfred hasn't been bald with a pencil mustache.
when are we going to get comic accurate alfred?

hollywood is discriminating against middle aged bald mens.

The simple truth is unless their race is intrinsic to who they are as a character, pretty much any character can be race swapped. Bruce Wayne could be portrayed as a black man. Nothing in the mythos really prohibits that. The issue you run into is that some characters are so deeply rooted into the pop culture consciousness that it's a harder sell for some than it is for others. I don't think Gordon really falls into that category.

Side characters don't really share the same scrutiny as the main ones.

Bruce Wayne is old money. I’m talking centuries old, white privileged. And that’s the public perception in Gotham. You can NOT change his race, unlike Grayson, Gordon, Dent or Kyle. If they do, I will not watch.

Coming from old money doesn't stop any of the Waynes from marrying a non-Caucasian within more recent generations.

Like I said. It's a harder sell for some characters. But there is nothing about Batman that requires he be white.
