Joe Wright to Helm 'Pan'

Well two wrongs doesn't make it right, you know. Nothing against Rooney but this sort of version is worse. Rock and a hard place.
Worse then what? I see no Rock or a hard place. I see a rather lame attempt at outrage, but not much else. A bit like the Lone Ranger situation.

When white character is replaced with non-white = "Nothing in the character is defined by their race therefore it's okay!"

When non-white character is replaced with white character = "It doesn't matter that the portrayed character has nothing specifically defined by their race, this is racial white-washing!"

--------

Personally, I generally dislike it when a character's original race is changed either way but double-standards irritate me more.

Ugh it is not a double standard. Native Americans are severely underrepresented in television and film. White people are not. Therefore the same standards don't apply!

People are allowed to critique the film because Hollywood once again missed an opportunity to include diversity in a film. And people will continue to do so until Hollywood addresses this problem.

You don't think Native Americans would like to see themselves represented in a mainstream film by Native American actors?

Hugh Jackman's costume looks like William Shakespeare attempted to design the clothes of Emperor Ming the Merciless.

I must say that I'm really tired of these race arguments.

Hugh Jackman sounds a bit like Timothy Dalton in the newest trailer. Anyone hear it too?

Eh, there's diversity in the film. Smee is being played by a Pakistani man and Wendy Darling is now African American. Though no one will complain about those race changes.
I really don't think Native Americans would appreciate being portrayed on film in the stereotypical way Barrie wrote them.
Personally, I think the change was for the best.

I do not think Hollywood giving up on appropriately depicting a Native character is for the best. There are ways of empowering Tiger Lilly and not making her racist. You know, by doing what they seem to be doing in this movie except with a Native American actress...

Happy to hear about the diversity in the film. Are the Smee and Wendy characters leads in the film?

Maybe I should rephrase what I said and that I think making the tribe itself a melting pot of people rather than just a tribe of Native Americans was a really smart idea. Yes, they could have cast a Native American actress in the role, though then you'd have complaints that they didn't cast the whole tribe that way. There's really no winning in these situations…either way someone is going to complain.

I knew you'd jump on the lead thing. Nope they aren't, Wendy I believe has a tiny part. That doesn't matter to me though. The fact that they did it is what's important to me.

Oh and Katya deserved to go much further. :woot:

Either way, the movie looks great and I'm glad that they moved the release date. It's hard to say how it would've done in June.

Yep. The new release date isn't perfect, but it feels a lot better. Like it has a real chance. :yay:

October is such a slow month. Like the number one movies usually bank about 10-15 million in the opening weekend. Gravity kinda changed that but even then that was in late October.

October could just be looking for that movie that makes it a "thing". Kind of like how 300 and Hunger Games made March.

October is quite busy. We've got:

Pan
Goosebumps
Spielberg's Bridge of Spies
Steve Jobs
Crimson Peak
London Has Fallen
Zemeckis' The Walk
The Last Witch Hunter
Jem and the Holograms

What was the release date for the last live action Peter Pan movie? That was a great adaptation and movie, but I remember it didn't do well at the box office. I wonder how this movie will compare

Omg totally agree.

The P.J. Hogan film? It was a Christmas day release and you're right it didn't do well at all.

Visually this looks amazing. I am actually looking forward to this.

As far as the issue with race of Tiger Lily - This is a movie! Obviously he role is big and they need a recognizable name for it. And unfortunately there are not much recognizable or famous native American actresses out there.

This is Hollywood. If people can play animals, monsters and aliens, why can't they play Indians.

But this is only my opinion. I personally am looking forward to the film.

Ever heard of Blackface? Let's not go there.

And there are Native American actors looking for a big break. This movie could make one into a star. Is Mara a recognizable name, really? I can't see Average Joe movie goer knowing who she is and wanting to see this because of her.

You do realize that works both ways right? I can't imagine average joe movie goer seeing the talented and beautiful Rooney Mara playing Tiger Lily, and saying I am not going to watch this movie because of it.

So why not hire a Native American actress instead if Mara is neither a draw or a deterrent for the masses?

Darth there are many here supporting the movie. Even the ones who are okay with Mara's casting were like 'Um..Okay'. Or at least at first.

So that never went through your mind at one point? Not for a nano-second where you go 'Oh..that's beeping weird. But okay."

Because the director and studio made a short list of actresses they wanted, tested them and then picked from that.

Not until people started complaining. Its Rooney Mara. I was just happy to see her in another semi big budget film, and working with one of my favorites in Joe Wright. I am not big on complaining about race in terms of casting. There are some exception and I find the idea that you can change the race of a white character because white people apparently have no culture, absurd. But outside of that, it comes down to talent. Especially with quality directors.

Well I'm not going to passively accept their choice. I think it was a bad choice. Positive portrayals of stigmatized groups in television and movies make a lot of difference. Not every movie HAS to do this, but this movie had a good opportunity to. Keep in mind that Native American extras walked off of Adam Sandler's movie because it was so racist. That is the climate of Hollywood right now.
