John Wick: Chapter 4

Am I the only one who doesn't get why some film buffs kinda scoff at these movies? obviously they're very popular, and the vast majority loved chapter 4, but there seems to be this stigma from certain people that these movies have no substance at all and aren't worthy of being called truly great action films. I've even seen them compare it to fast and furious, which is pretty insulting. Maybe it's some of the pretentious film youtubers I follow, but I remember like 2 of them only being interested when someone said it was the Fury Road of the franchise.

I don't really care what people say, but most action movies don't have choreography this good, while also having great characters and cinematography this stunning. Only John Wick and Mission Impossible.

I do think the substance from the first first movie has been somewhat lost in the sequels. Especially 2 and 3. 4 brought it back a little though and it was all the better for it IMO. I just wish they had trimmed the run time.

Do film buffs really scoff at these movies? Or at least enough film buffs to make a comment on? The reception of these movies are very good and they get pretty high marks across the board. I rarely see much blowback on these movies. Sure Stone said his comments, which are ok. Nothing to get bent outta shape over. But yeah I rarely see film buffs complain about these movies

I read the artical and what Stone said. Nothing to shrug about, he just said it was unrealistic like a video game, which is was.
These kind of movies are not his cup of tea, nothing to build a drama over that.
Yeah he's not really saying anything off base. Nor is he being insulting to the fanbase of filmmakers. He's basically saying they're not for me. Which is fine.
I agree with him. But I just happen to like the John Wick series and the Fast & Furious series. I thought the appeal of movies like John Wick, Commando, The Raid, all those old martial arts movies was seeing a one man army rip their way through enemies in an unrealistic way. I don't see how anyone can really disagree with what he's saying even if they like those kinda movies.

I really wish the trend of "X filmmaker says they don't like X movie and then people get their undies in a bunch" would go away...Also wish outlets would stop using "slam" or "slammed" every time someone says something slightly negative
Unless they're insulting the fans of the movie I don't get why people get so bothered unless they're really insecure. If you're solid in what you like, some person you never met before saying they're not a fan of a movie you like shouldn't really register with you at all imo.

EDIT: If there's anything to be mad about with Stone, doesn't he have multiple MeToo sexual harassment allegations?

The vast majority love these movies absolutely, but I can't help but feel like some of the more pretentious YouTube reviewers feel these movies are mindless in comparison to something like mission impossible. 4 months later and I honestly stillbelieve John wick chapter 4 is one of the greatest action films ever made and as much as I really loved Dead Reckoning part 1, I still think chapter 4 edges it out for best action film of the year. To me, chapter 4 was the culmination of everything Chad and the team put their soul into. Everything in this movie is perfected and while I get why some prefer the first movie, this is easily the Fallout or Fury Road of the franchise for me. Plus, it felt like a great ending to Johns story if they choose for it to be that. I see some people question the logic of these movies, but like, I can do that with any film.

Even the simple fight scene between Caine and wick is above most fight scenes I've seen in recent years.

I think it's in your head. I'm not saying some people don't dislike this series but by far its such a small minority that it's not worth getting bothered with it. I don't get why care especially in this case when JW is very very well loved and the love by far outweighs the hate. Not everyone is going to like every movie

And John Wick is mindless I don't get how anyone can argue this. I love this series to death, but it's not a deep series...and it's not trying to be. Both series are great, but I would say it's different than Mission Impossible (not that that's incredibly deep either) in that regard. It's all about preference. The John Wick series is a bunch of great action set pieces held together by a flimsy script that's elevated by some fun performances and really cool world building. That's not a knock against it. It's balls to the wall action done very well. No one is going to John Wick for the dialogue, the pathos, an interesting message, or anything deep. At least I havent seen or heard of that
I would call a lot of balls to the wall action films "mindless". They're not made for you to think, they're not trying to impress you with the script. They're trying to impress you with the action set pieces and scenes.
That doesn't mean they're bad if they still deliver the action like John Wick, a lot of older Stallone/Van Damme/Snipes/Arnold movies, The Raid, some John Woo movies, Fast 5-8, most eastern Asian martial arts movies, etc. "Mindless" in the case of action movies doesn't mean devoid of talent or skill to make.
Now if someone is saying making these movies doesn't require talent to make or that the crew making them are "talentless" (which I've seen so many people do with the Fast series) I have a problem with that because that's just insulting. Regardless of what you think of John Wick, the Fast series, etc. the amount of effort these kinda movies clearly put into practical effects, fight choreography, etc. takes a lot of talent. I get not liking them though but using "talentless" is just being disingenuous and kinda a jerk imo

Finally got to rewatch this on VOD with my Dad and this was just as incredible the second time and my Dad loved it. This might actually be in my top ten favorite movies of all time. Its a masterpiece. I feel like after watching this movie, whats the point in watching any other action flicks? This movie is an action junkie's wet dream, it gives you everything you want and them some...and then some more.

I still hope they stick to their guns with that ending and continue the franchise with other characters because there are plenty of colorful, quirky characters in this world to pass the torch on to. I would happily watch a Donnie Yen led trilogy. But I think the right call would be to let John's character rest, his journey is done.

I'm confused. Isn't the blu ray already out (and the boxset)?

John Wick 4 has been out on Blu-ray for a few months but the boxset with all four movies comes out in October. The only boxset you can currently buy is the first three movies only.

Oh right. Must be a US thing. A complete boxset dropped here in the UK when part 4 did.

Been thinking about this film a lot lately. It's almost september and not only do I still think it's the best action flick of the year, but it's my #2 film of the year right behind Oppenheimer. Gorgeous cinematography, some of the best hand to hand action sequences I've seen since the first Matrix film, incredible music, memorable characters and wonderful wrap up of Johns character arc, at least for the time being. still a 10/10 masterpiece, and I don't hesitate to say that.

I guess I liked the first movie. However, I ended up seeing 2 and 3 back-to-back. So they kinda blurred together; and I was somewhat underwhelmed. But I decided to give 4 a try (now that it’s on-demand). Hokey smoke! What an extraordinary piece of filmmaking. Really, really impressive.

I will keep watching if they're good. But I am skeptical we have 5 movies here before it starts becoming stale.

Yeah 9 movies seems a bit excessive. 4 wrapped things up nicely but if they brought it back I wouldn't squabble. Aim for 5/6 at most then be done with it.

I am just wondering when they will opt for like a John Wick Chapter 0 that shows that mission he did. I don't think we NEED to ever see it, but if plan is anywhere up to 5 more of these, it's one of the most obvious places to go

Judging by how exhausted Keanu looked in the fourth one, I doubt we'll get five more of these.

If we do get another movie. I hope they make it a bit shorter next time.

I have really enjoyed every one of these, but I did find my wandering a bit during JW4 as the action became repetitive. I hesitate to say that because I thought 4 was better than 3.
