Nah, he mouthed ten. It'd make no sense for him to mouth six when the officer had already said six.

This shows a lack of understanding of the scene and general human expressions. He repeats what the officer says(mouthing the word six), as if in surprise for comedic effect.

You can't say it's ten/six simply because it looks like it's ten/six, that is invalid. It's pretty easy to say ten, or six, and have the movement of your mouth stay the exact same.

In the context of the dialogue and characters, ten makes no sense what so ever.

Not a Joker quote per se but related to him and brilliant and very funny imo when Batman asks Maroni if the Joker has any friends and he replies : "Have you seen the guy ?" or something like that. Perfect delivery by Roberts.

That's how I took it. iunno, watching it on Youtube and looking at .gifs, to me it looks like the same thing either way. For example the .gif right there; Depending on what I think at the moment it looks exactly like six or ten. This'd only be solved by the script or subtitles, I'm afraid.

Speaking of which, what does he say before he stabs Bats near the end? "All the old, familiar places..." is what it seems like, but I'm not sure.

yea i think you're right, Heath probly improvised that little bit. But i am sitting hear now, listening to it with propper headphones that i use when DJing (they are crystal clear) and i can deffs hear "teh" like hes saying 10. you cant hear the last part though, but it would sound like "teh-en". after watching it about 50 times with my headphones i believe he deffinately says 10, no doubt in my mind.

I love that scene, both Fox and Reese's deliveries are so perfect, almost like a comedic duo or something. Imo TDK really strikes a perfect balance between the humour and the more somber moments, not really an easy thing to do.

I actually like how Nolan approaches humor - instead of presenting a scenario where you're supposed to laugh, he presents instead, a serious situation with absurd undertones. There were times in TDK where I laughed and I immediately thought, "Oh God, I shouldn't be laughing, this is a serious situation."

Seeing Following recently also makes this obvious. There's a point in the film where the main character can't find a bag to put stolen money in, but he finds duct tape, so he chooses to tape the money to himself instead. The image of someone in their underwear duct-taping bills to himself is tremendously absurd, so the audience laughed, but the character was still in a situation where he could get caught and experience a rather unpleasant punishment...

Not to mention the, "Am I chasing this guy? [gunshot] No..he's chasing me" and "I don't feel drunk.." moments in Memento.

Pardon me for just randomly swooping in again, but I'd like to throw my 2 cents into the "6" vs. "10" debate. I would put my life on it...he says "10". I have seen the movie 6 times, and it is quite clear to me he says 10. The Joker doesn't need to know who specifically this guy's friends are, he is just making the point he killed 10 fellow officers.

Which brings me to my favorite quote(s)/scene in the movie:

"I want my phone call...I want it, I want it, I want my phone call."
"How many of your friends have I killed?"
"10"
"Do you wanna know why I use a knife? Guns are too quick. You can't savor all the little emotions. You see, in their last moments people show you who they really are...so you could say I knew your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?"

I loved how, after egging the cop on, he cracks his neck because he knows he is about to tussle.

This, in my humble opinion, is the best scene in the movie. It is, for me, the defining part of his performance. The subtlety in his evil creepiness was classic, and quite honestly that is the part of the movie that has stayed with me.

That many?"...It's obvious, that's not how Joker would say "no, it's not 6, it's 10" -or anyone that I know, for that matter-. Besides, if the script doesn't say a thing, it's probably because it's all improvised by Ledger, and not all part of the plan. Therefore, it's six then, he's not altering the script or the story in any way with that little emotion. Just like the applause scene in the jail cell... Nice.

Through the first four viewings I was convinced, I would have gone to my grave swearing he said six. On the fifth viewing I realized he does say ten. There is absolutely no sibilance, and trust me, if there's anything odd about the construction of your mouth, you have more sibilance than most (think Sylvester the cat). He is determined to goad Stephens into attacking him. He's not correcting him; he's upping the ante.
