This topic seems fairly useless because there is no way in hell the Joker is going to be anything but american in the film.

No kidding, I remember seeing this thread start last night just before bed and saying to myself "thank god this is over" once the article was posted confirming the Joker is American ....but forgot logic/factual evidence/etc. don't tend to prevail on the Internet and the thread continues...

Yes to him speaking in an accent - an American one. I'm Australian and I don't want him speaking in an Aussie accent, anyway, I doubt he even wants to do it in an Aussie accent with such an important character. Keeping your natural accent for a movie set in a different country is only good if your character is written as being from that country or if your character is minor and doesn't matter that much, like that blonde chick from Transformers, she used to be in a soapie here in Aus.

What about a Woody Allen-ish accent? Lots of gasping and mumbling and kosher jokes?

Forgot his name, but someone some posts above says there is no such thing as an American accent. You being Australian, would you say American's have an accent to you?

As for the question, hell no. Joker as well as Batman are American characters. I wouldn't call it blasphemy if the Joker had an accent but it would sure as hell be distracting.

I'm sure every word he speaks will ooooze creepy. As long as he doesn't pull a brokeback mountain accent on us, I had to watch that movie with the subtitles on.

Of course Americans have an accent, I mean...don't you realise that not every american speaks the same, I've heard different americans talk from different regions and there are accent differences, there isn't one person on this earth that can be classified as not having an accent...except mutes, and people who decide to speak in complete monotony. So to answer your question, I believe only an american would say that he doesn't have an accent.

This just suddenly popped into my mind.

Heath is Austrailian.
Would anyone object to him speaking with an accent as the Joker?

I honestly can't decide, I think either could work very well. However I'm sure some fanboys would be outraged if Mister J spoke with an Australian accent.

Thoughts?

i want him to use what hugo weaving as smith called his 'news anchor' tone..
not slow and monotone, but not from any spot in america.
apparently aussies are good at that vague accentless thing.

No such thing as an American accent.

This isn't disputable. The delivery based on the phonetic spelling of words means that the plain old lack of an accent is just that. Canadian...American...it just means he doesn't have an accent at all.

There are dialects. Southern accent and such. The Joker doesn't have an accent. That would restrict the character. Unless it's integral to the character's persona when have you ever heard of any comic character having an accent.

I'll quote myself before someone thinks they're clever and racks their brain...

Lies! To Heath it is an american accent because it is not the natural way he talks. Sure, it will be a very generic accent, but an accent in it's general sense. To say there's not such this is foolish.

We are, because our natural way of talking is so slack it's more simple for us to change the way we speak to sound more vague but still from a noticible continent, if you get what I mean. Generic British, American accents and whatnot.

I know you where banned cuz you smarted off to c lee and your the reason that the first batusi lounge got closed

yeah, i killed the batusi lounge, and am staying from the new one in case c.lee
smites it.

if i was banned it didn't take! :hyper:

anyhoo, yeah he should have an accent,
an american accent [non specific]

yup, btw aren't you sleepy? i mean i'm a night owl but its 3:30!

If they wanted Joker with a heavy accident, they would've chosen Sean Connery :o

First off, in order for the Joker not to have an accent he'd be mute. Everyone has an accent, it just depends on what region of the world the accent is from. Ledger has said in a previous interview that the Joker will have an American accent.

vel, ov courze ze joker vil have a accent, ya. Ze joker vas alvays german at heart.

Yonder topic doth not needest its own thread.

...

-th.

Physics tells us that the forum began when one super dense thread burst into many topics! "big bang"

They also say that the forum will end in a chaotic, violent contraction where all threads will contract down to one single, super dense thread again. This is known as the "big crunch"

So have hope my friend, all will be one again.

A non-U.S. accent would be bizarre and distracting. Surely Joker is Gotham through and through, otherwise why would he want to so gleefully terrorize it? Nothing like playing at home.
in the terrible batman confidential storyline the pre-joker moves to gotham after batman's established himself

it sucks so bad

he'll have an american accent, although I have no idea what he'll sound like. I honestly can't picture Heath as teh Joker even with all the cool spy shots we've been getting. I love it! Thank god we didn't get Crispin Glover or Paul Bettany because I know exactly how they'd play him.
