The Dark Knight Joker's Mask Theory...

I think it's this obsession with Nolan's use of the word "realism". For some reason these so-called fans seem to think they need to change things to the point of unrecognizablity to satsify some vague sense of absolute realism. Something that is totally IMPOSSIBLE in a Batman movie. Batman is a realistic fantasy, but a fantasy, nonetheless. They are carrying this realism aspect to a ridiculous degree, one that Nolan himself doesn't intend.

it wouldnt make sense for him to say he's he loves to wear makeup in a movie because he's an actor, he always has makeup on, so he said mask, meaning prosthetics. Thats how I interpreted it anyway.

Yup. That's how I see it. "Mask" - meaning some type of prosthetic application. I'm betting it's and ear-to-ear grin like Nicholson had in B89.

Not a full-face mask.

Don't you think it's too early to condemn the idea? I mean yes, it's different....But who knows. They might as well go with it. Whatever Ledger meant, literally or metaphorically, it could work both ways, as long as it serves the story.

But it's disrespectful to the character.

Putting the Joker in a mask would be as, well insulting, as putting Batman in a army camo. It may work with the story, it may be "realistic", but it's not at all respectful to the character.

Let's just say, I will be extremely disapointed if The Joker wears a mask.

Though, I doubt it will happen. That sounds way to risky, they wouldn't dare change the character that much. If they do, I will be so angry.

You know, I thought that too, but.. He's mentioned the mask issue TWICE now. Once has to start to wonder.. And worry..

That's how I feel. Once = metaphorical, probably.

Twice = ....?

But are you sure he mentioned it twice, or was just quoted differently by two different reporters?

They are interviewed hundreds of times in one sitting.
You are bound to repeat yourself or have an answer already planned out(which is how it usually is).

Again people!! HE WILL NOT LITERALLY BE WEARING A MASK!!! Regardless of how many times or exactly how he said it. And, although he may wear prosthetics, Mask does not mean that either.

To wear a mask, is just to become a character. For example:

Rachel says to Bruce at the end: "This is your mask now."

Is he wearing a mask? nooooooooooooooo. lol.

It is just a figure of speech.

did nolan already made a comment of how will the joker look?

Nope, no word on that yet. Hopefully we'll get a lot more once Prestige starts doing it's promo rounds.

Ledger confirmed that he meant "mask" in figurative meaning, so we shouldn't worry about it ;)
^Thank you.
Ledger is also slated to co-star in "The Dark Knight," the upcoming sequel to "Batman Returns," as the Joker, a character played by Jack Nicholson in the 1989 film "Batman." "I love wearing masks. I like falling behind and into a character and I know this will be a beautiful mask to wear," Ledger said.

"And obviously we’re not going to head down the same path that Jack Nicholson took. We’re going to make it more sinister. Its very new to me right now and I’ve got a lot of thinking to do about it. It’s going to require a lot of energy and preparation. But I feel like it’s going to be a lot of fun. I’ve never been a fan of comic book movies. But I saw (‘Batman Returns,’ directed by Christopher Nolan) and I thought it was good. He’s a good director." Christian Bale who plays Batman is awesome. And for some reason Joker is the one character that has intrigued me. I feel like there’s a joker within us all."

Finally someone says it.

This mask this is getting sad.

Nicholson even called it a mask. It's called mask acting. Prosthetics and make-up count the same way in regards to this.

Once and for all.........

It's an actor's statement. It does NOT mean a literal mask. It means stepping into a character. Becoming that character is akin to putting on a mask.

When Walter Mathau played Oscar Madison ... he was putting on a mask.

When Robin Williams played Patch Adams ... he was putting on a mask

When Anthony Hopkins played Hannibal Lechtor ... he was putting on a mask

When Heath Ledger made that statement, that's all he was referring to.

Umm...

I wasn't taking a jab at Hopkins. I merely meant to draw attention to what I would think would be obvious to most; that Hopkinswore a literal mask in Silence of the Lambs. :o
