I think it's this obsession with Nolan's use of the word "realism". For some reason these so-called fans seem to think they need to change things to the point of unrecognizablity to satsify some vague sense of absolute realism. Something that is totally IMPOSSIBLE in a Batman movie. Batman is a realistic fantasy, but a fantasy, nonetheless. They are carrying this realism aspect to a ridiculous degree, one that Nolan himself doesn't intend.

it wouldnt make sense for him to say he's he loves to wear makeup in a movie because he's an actor, he always has makeup on, so he said mask, meaning prosthetics. Thats how I interpreted it anyway.

Yup. That's how I see it. "Mask" - meaning some type of prosthetic application. I'm betting it's and ear-to-ear grin like Nicholson had in B89.

Not a full-face mask.

Don't you think it's too early to condemn the idea? I mean yes, it's different....But who knows. They might as well go with it. Whatever Ledger meant, literally or metaphorically, it could work both ways, as long as it serves the story.

But it's disrespectful to the character.

Putting the Joker in a mask would be as, well insulting, as putting Batman in a army camo. It may work with the story, it may be "realistic", but it's not at all respectful to the character.

Let's just say, I will be extremely disapointed if The Joker wears a mask.

Though, I doubt it will happen. That sounds way to risky, they wouldn't dare change the character that much. If they do, I will be so angry.

Nicholson even called it a mask. It's called mask acting. Prosthetics and make-up count the same way in regards to this.

When Walter Mathau played Oscar Madison ... he was putting on a mask.

When Robin Williams played Patch Adams ... he was putting on a mask

When Anthony Hopkins played Hannibal Lechtor ... he was putting on a mask

When Heath Ledger made that statement, that's all he was referring to.
