I hear the story is going to be based on 'mega city riots' with dredd and anderson making their way from the bottom floor to the top in a high rise building.

why, oh why, oh why can't they make the dark judges. the story for that practically writes itself. anyway as long as carl keeps his helmet on for the entire movie that will have to do.

Well I think the main thing is, while I cant quite see him in the role now, he is a genuinly good actor and if he has agreed to not take his helmet off the whole movie it shows that he is indeed a fan and will take the role very seriously, these two things are always a plus in my eyes.

Pretty much how I feel in a nutshell. Personally, I never really thought that Urban was that great until I went into Star Trek and he literally blew me away. Here was me thinking he'd be the weak point of the movie and it turned out that I felt he gave the strongest performance as Bones - thats when I realised the guy could really produce the goods.

I realise now that my reservations on the Dredd casting were based purely of how Urban looks i.e. his jaw doesnt quite match up to anything near resembling Dredd's, which I now see has kinda superficial as its merely a cosmetic thing. If he gets the character down [and theres every indication that he'll be able to] then I dont see why he cant knock it out of the park. The lack of ego for the lead to wear a helmet in all of the movie is massive too; but then I have heard that Urbans a sound fella.

If he has been cast, then its time to get behind the guy. Of course, it doesnt hurt that he basically one of us - we know that hes a Star Trek fanatic and now we can add 2000AD to that as well.

I'm warming to the idea. Definately.

The dark judges may be a little 'heavy' for a first movie, I dont mind them going with something a little more serious and believable for the first movie, if its a success, THEN go a bit wacky in the sequel.

I've been impressed by him in a lot of things, LOTR, Bourne Supremecy, Chronicles Of Riddick and Star Trek I thought he was very good in all of them, so primarily i'm happy they got a good actor.

And if he's a big fan all the better, it means he will take it seriously and thats great news whoever is in the part. I am slowly but surely getting a little excited by this.

Cal could be the adequate villain for a first film(I don't know if The Kleggs could be too much, though). Rico in a second film, and the Dark Judges in third. The Angel Gang could be background villains in either of the films.

....and I would have no complaints in seeing Mechanismo in there somewhere:)

if you approach the dark angels as wacky, then they will BE wacky.
I would try and make it as realistic as possible, for instance with judge fire I would build a flame resistant suit and actually have a guy on fire, no CG, just dub the dialogue over the action after filming. the subject matter can be as serious as you want it to be no matter how outlandish the character, think TDK.

Stephen Lang as Dredd. He was badass in Avatar as the colonel.

No, screw realism, in fact F*** realism, make the Dark Judges like the comics or don't make them at all.

I don't want Judge Death to just be some random guy that goes around killing, I want him to be what he and his cohorts are, undead law enforcers that have declared being alive a crime.

I think Karl Urban is a solid actor. He did better than I expected imitating DeForest Kelly in Stark Trek. As Judge Dredd, dunno. I mean Urban has been a good supporting role before. His lead roles like DOOM were not very good.

Also, the thing is, Judge Dredd is an American and a bit of an older dude. Urban is pushing 40, but he looks like he can pass off his late 20's at times. I just wonder if Urban can capture the gritty veteran part of Dredd's character.

We've heard about a new Dredd movie for years. Let's see if this one actually gets made.

Honestly, here is the real truth. I'd much rather see like a like a big budget TV series from like BBC1 or ITV do a Dredd show. Start with 6 or 7 episodes and then go from there. The British make very good TV series.

A UK show could not support the budget needed for a Judge Dredd show, it would have to be an American one. Shows like Doc Who can only do a couple of eps a year in an alien/futuristic design(ie ones that need a lot of sfx), the rest have to be in normal everyday surroundings, or at least period settings which do not need sfx.
The ITV sci-fi show Primeval is set in normal everday environments as well, with all the sfx budget going on cgi dinosaurs and creatures.

Damn, dare I beleive that they are actually going to make this movie?

It's looking likely, isnt it?

I know, I dont know what to do with myself..........I am just going to go jogging for 2 years and when I come back if its made I should be sound!

:woot:

The Primeval series production values grew increasingly more impressive over time. Look at sets like the ARK facility.

I didn't follow that show slavishly, I just watched the odd ep here and there, so I don't remember that facility. Didn't ITV cancel it though? It might have been getting a bit expensive for the ad/dvd/merch revenue it was bringing in, but someone else has now picked it up, SyFy or someone, can't recall.
but yeah, a US station would have to do JD, I would like to see that, but, I would kind of prefer to see a well done movie, just to see it done to the max.

Despite being a UK resident i never bought 2000AD, just a copy here and there, as I knew I would always end up missing the next week at points and have lots of incomplete stories. But i read em here and there, I have the Halo Jones collection, but no JD.
I thought the Stallone movie was alright, but even I was annoyed that he was only in one sequence in full uniform and helmet, so I can only imagine how die-hard fans felt about that.
I have the dvd, but have ended up putting it off after that block war sequence the last two times i put it on.

For me a TV show just doesnt have the producton values that a Dredd movie needs, heck, this movie doesnt seem to have the budget Dredd needs, but I can see why they are going the route they are.

Ok, so, for Joe Dredd(and I guess also for Rico in a possible sequel:cwink:) we pretty much already have Karl Urban. Now, who could be a good Cassandra Anderson? My picks are Sienna Miller, Marley Shelton, Jamie King, and Jordan Ladd

^Mila Kunis or Jessica Biel for me, both have shown they can kick a little ass in movies before.

"I would have loved to do the Judge Dredd movie that is underway." he told Man Made Movies in a recent interview. "I was in fact sent the script to look at. Its a great script, and I hope I will not rue the decision of passing on it."

When asked why exactly he decided against helming the upcoming movie which will star Star Trek's Karl Urban in the title role he said, "Thing was, I had such a strong idea of what I wanted to do with a Dredd movie, I could not bring myself to take it on and not do it my way!"

"It's not like I could do it as a sequel either; my Dredd would have been really weird, and dark and funny, but not your traditional introduction to a hero character. I don't even know if I could have made my version of the film pitch-able. It was maybe too off the wall," he finished by saying.

^^...yes, and one of the most popular characters of the Dredd universe. She's a phsychic judge who's often helped Dredd defeat Judge Death and the other Dark Judges.
