Judge Dredd Reboot!!

This might sound quaint, but should we expect Urban to bulk up for the role like he did for "Pathfinder" or like Tom Jane did for "The Punisher"? Or will he, like Ray Stevenson in "Punisher:War Zone", sport a regular/average athletic look and rely more on "pure presence" wearing his heavy-geared suit throughout most of the film? What you all think?

I don't expect a Simon Bisley-drawn Judge Dredd come to life, mind you, but Carlos Ezquerra and Cliff Robinson convincingly drew Dredd in such a way that his strong build could come through his relatively thick-layered uniform.

I honestly dont think Urbans one of those guys who can acheive that 'comicbook-buff' build ala Jackman, Bale etc. I remember that this was covered a lot a few years ago when people where suggesting him for Thor based of his LOTR part - fella doesnt seem to have the body type or the genetics to do that, for me. Plus, even if he could, I doubt that the Star Trek guys would want Bones to put on a significant amount of muscle for their next outing.

I think they may go with a muscle suit under a thick-layered uniform and bank on Urban's performance on selling Dredd's ability to kick ass (think Mel Gibson as Mad Max).

Which is by no means a bad thing.

I'd rather see some heavy duty protective gear like the examples of which I've found on the net as opposed to the lycra that we got in Sly's movie, anyways:-

The picture on the very top is kinda' what I expect Urban to look like with the helmet on.

I expect the Judge uniforms to very much look like the suits the special team used in Neil Marshall's "Doomsday".

Hmm, I'm trying to remember what they looked like; I can recall that I did get a distinct 2000AD vibe when I saw them though.

Following on from that - it seems that 'Judge Minty' has some cracking still images knocking around:-

Looks great for a fan film. I hope some of these aspects look as good in the real movie. Tell me this isnt an awesome image:-

Ah yeah - that's it. Definite 2000AD vibe.

Makes me think of other movies that look like they come straight off the 2000AD printed page, such as Kurt Russell's 'Soldier'. Obviously, premise aside (with a name like Rogue Trooper, I'm sure you're only too aware of the similiarities in concept), the big guns, alien locations, spacecraft, big boots and massively-wheeled armored tanks lend themselves to that 'style'.

I know that it was supposed to be a sequel to Blade Runner, but I think Paul Anderson must have grew up on AD.

In many ways, Solder actually 'out-2000ADd' the official Dredd movie. Not that the 1995 film's production design got anything wrong - a lot of it was spot-on. I just wouldve liked to see more of it and for them to have the balls to go even crazier with it, as befitting the ethos of the magazine. We've yet to see a true and proper 2000AD movie yet - something which I find staggering given it's influence on filmakers and actors over the years.

Speaking of which, did you at any point during Avatar look at the Nav'i and imagine that was Rogue or Friday up there on screen instead of Jake Sully?
:awesome:
Very cool!!

Isnt it just;

Funny the things you stumble across on the net when you're looking for something else.

"Soldier" definately borrowed from "Rogue Trooper". No question.

Also, speaking of "Soldier", Kurt Russell's performance was definately more Dredd-like than anything Stallone did.

Yeah, I agree about the "Avatar" thing. Also, in "Watchmen", just picture Dr. Manhattan with army gear when he's in Vietnam, and you got a nice Rogue Trooper-like visual.

Well, hopefully if Dredd is a success, we may well get to see a Rogue Trooper movie proper.

So I guess I'll be the first here to say that Karl Urban does not look good as Dredd. Everything else looks spot on, especially the judge gear and Minty. But I REALLY don't like Karl Urban as the title character. Looking at him in the Dredd gear, I am left feeling totally unimpressed by the lack of stature and presence.

:lmao: Nice!! Ok, those pictures are from a fan-made film not the currently in pre-production film. That's not Karl Urban.:cwink:

Oh ok. It feels good to be wrong lol. But now I am left feeling disappointed as this most likely NOT how the official film is going to look.

...I wouldn't be surprised if the suits look something like molded-leather a la Ben Affleck's "Daredevil" suit or The X-Men's film suits.

You know what - I'm now picturing the Daredevil costume and thinking that is the perfect way to go. Good call.

I read the script. It's DEFINITELY HARD-R - lots of head pops etc.
It's pretty good, stays true to the comic-book in terms of the tone that Verheoven lifted for Robocop. Pastiche ultra-violence.
I also detected a relatively subtle anti-iraq war allegory - alot of innocent people die in this movie!

Anderson is an intruiging character - there's one mind-read scene that I'd be genuinely suprised to see make it to the screen. (sexual violence)

MY SCRIPT REVIEW (SPOILERS)
It's essentially a day-in-the-life of Dredd with Anderson tagging along for her Judge Assessment. Riffs off of Die-Hard, Dredd and Anderson find themselves in a locked-down 200 storey high super-block with no means of escape whilst the majority of the populace are after them.

Alot of innocent families are killed in a "micro-genocide" as the gang leader who controls the block seeks to kill the judges A fat ex-prostitute called "Ma-Ma" who feminized her pimp with her teeth and went on to control the block :)

Mega City One's junkies are hooked on the new drug "Slo-Mo" which reduces percieved time to 1 percent of real. This is really a script hook which allows for super slow-motion action scenes. A bit too Matrix for my tastes but at least has story-reason and is not purely stylistic. (if this stays, it'll be like watching a super-violent Matrix movie, with slow-motion head-bursts etc)

The drug is also used to help along some pretty brutal torture scenes.
(skinning alive etc, falls from buildings whilst on the drug)

The female villains pretty unconventional and pure evil. Definitely not a sympathetic villain but also not a particularly great one either.
Also having Dredd lump her in the face several times, giving her slo-mo and chucking her off a building...not sure how this is going to come off. A male central villian is an easier choice.

Those aspects are dissapointing but the script is very tight, dialogue great and it's seriously visceral. Story unfolds like lightning...lots of quick pacy scenes. No origin story or anything.

It'd work better if they lost the "Ma-Ma" character imho, maybe replacing her with a slightly more digestable character.

I'd rate it 7/10. It's not an epic but it's a safe bet that fans will like this as long as they appreciate that it's a fiscally safe move for the studio. If it does well, I'd hope for a grander-scale sequel though.

Just want to say that yesterday I got the tpb "Judge Dredd:Mega City Masters 01"!! It's a must for any Dredd fan. Stories are written mostly by John Wagner and Alan Grant. Artists include Brian Bolland, Carlos Ezquerra, Kevin O'Neil, Alan Davis, John Byrne, Simon Bisley, Steve Dillon, Dave Gibbons, Cam Kennedy, and Jock among others. It has the Tim Bradstreet cover. I truly reccommend it.

It sounds basically like a Judge Dredd meets Die Hard type story. Eh I dunno. I kind of wanted dark judges.

Iraq war allegories = lame as ****.

Just saying, that **** ruined PRINCE OF PERSIA.
