I felt most sorry for Danny Cannon. He so wanted to make a good Dredd movie but as an inexperienced director basically didnt have any say in how everything went; Sly and the studio saw to that. It's one occasion were I'm not particularly a Sly fan [and I'm normally one of the biggest].

Almost wrecked Cannon's career - thank God for CSI is all I can say.

^^The good comic book adaptations from the 90's were "The Rocketeer", "The Crow", "The Mask", "Timecop", "Men In Black", and "Blade". Those were, for the most part, solid adaptations. "Judge Dredd" should have turned out like those. I'll never understand how they screwed it up.

I thought Judge Dredd was solid for the time it was violent had plenty of action and the occasional laugh. Dredd seemed like a superb bad ass in the movie. I don't know what else they could of done to make it better movie beside changing the plot.

I always wondered if Cannon had a career after JD, I now presume he did, dont know why studio's bother hiring directors sometimes when they just want to direct the movie themselves.

Indeed mate.

Apparently, as a massive 2000AD fan, he was steadfast against the idea of a story that meant Dredd removing his helmet and of the inclusion of Rob Scheider's comic relief character but was basically either told to film or or be replaced.

I can even recall stories in the tabloids at the time of the troubled production, where Cannon was said to be feeling truly out of his depth, depressed and alone; a genuine filmaker with ideas who's enthusiasm for the project had all but been crushed by the simple-mindedness, ignorance and ruthlessness of the studio and it's star.

Canon went on to be the/a producer of CSI so it's not all bad but still..............

Well, for one, they could have focused in trying to make a film that would have captured the spirit of the comic, instead of accomodating the property specifically so Stallone and the producers could cash in on the success of "Demolition Man".

As John Wagner said, "they made the wrong movie". What they should have done, and I hope it's something they'll do with the new film, is to create a disturbing, futuristic world full of cynisism and violence. A sense of creepiness also. The tone of "Total Recall", "Darkman", "Escape From New York", "Blade", and "Death Race 2000" is what they should have gone for.

Glad it didnt finish his career, shame though, we could have gotten a great Dredd movie years ago instean of being on tenterhooks now about one being made.

Was "I am the law." in the comics or did Stallone come up with that?

I like Urban but I'm not entirely sold on the idea of him as Dredd.

I dunno about perfect, but a very good choice!

Yeah, not perfect as someone you'd instantly shout "yess, he's the one", but one that once you give it some thought you kinda' see he has the appropriate "cinematic" elements for the part, much like James Purefoy as Solomon Kane, Thomas Jane as The Punisher, and ofcourse, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Well I think the main thing is, while I cant quite see him in the role now, he is a genuinly good actor and if he has agreed to not take his helmet off the whole movie it shows that he is indeed a fan and will take the role very seriously, these two things are always a plus in my eyes.

Are Judge Dredd comics available in the U.S. on a monthly basis, or would I have to order them online?

^^Here in the U.S, you can find in your local Barnes & Noble or comic book specialty store Judge Dredd Case Files 01 TPB. Ther's more to come, likely. Other Dredd titles you may have to order from abroad. Either eBay or 2000adonline.com

This is a manip of Karl Urban as Dredd done by a poster called "JudgeUmpty" at 2000adonline boards:

So no ongoing series here in the US? Bummer. :csad: Still, pretty excited to see this, now with Urban as the main man. :awesome:

At one point(probably a year and a half ago), Dynamite had announced that they were planning on making an ongoing series of Dredd, but nothing of the matter has been said since.

There's currently 15 volumes of Case Files. 16 comes out in August.

If you wanna read Dredd I don't understand why can't you just start reading them from TPB vol. 1?
