Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor

I'm not expecting to hear anything from Branagh until he does press for Valkyrie.

I guess so but has he directed something that warranted a sequel

Perhaps not, but he seems to want to try something different every time. It would have been very easy for him to follow up the success of Henry V with another Shakespearian drama with battle scenes, but he opted for stuff like a Hitchcock homage, Dead Again, a small character piece, Peter's Friends, a straight ahead Shakespearian comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, a horror film, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and a love letter to theater, A Midwinter's Tale, before finally tackling Shakespearian drama again with Hamlet.

I really can't see him having an equal committment to Thor as he does for Shakespeare, which even he took extended breaks from.

Nature of the genre

the movie will hopefully be plenty violent, hardcore Viking-deity combat..

lol @ violent enough for pg-13, THOR can be violent due to there is way more leeway to kill/fight monsters in movies. Hope thor gets 2 fight a frost giant or some other huge beasts... (depending on the budget).

Now people want an R-rated Thor :whatever:

Not everything needs to be R-rated. PG-13 is more than fine for Thor.

LOTR is a great example of the type of live/fantasy action we should expect in asgard and midgard (just with a hammer and lightning).

I'm wondering whether Marvel will let Branagh bring on Patrick Doyle to score Thor, as he did for Branagh's other films. Favreau was overruled in favor of Djawadi for Iron Man (rather than John Debney, his usual collaborator), and yet Louis Leterrier was allowed to bring in Craig Armstrong for The Incredible Hulk. I think this might be a case where Marvel will overrule Branagh for a more contemporary and "hotter" name from the MV/RC lineup.

And I don't know whether Doyle can pull off a heroic superhero sound for Thor, if he's brought on. A lot of Doyle's work consisted of dramas and comedies from the U.K., and the biggest film on his resume was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Yeah, that movie wasn't epic at all

Yeah, I don't get how that's a good argument either. Harry Potter likely had a bigger budget and certainly had higher box office expectations than Thor. Marvel would be pretty pleased if Thor does $400 million worldwide while that would be a massive disappointment for a Harry Potter film.

Doyle's more than capable of the job. Henry V is enough for anybody's resume.

And, unless your name is John Williams, I don't think any composer is well known enough to be a significant draw.

Jerry Goldsmith wouldve knocked out an awesome Thor score.

That wouldve been something.
