Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor

Actually, According to Variety, he has options to appear in Thor, Cap, Avengers, etc. Which means he may or may not show up, depending on whether he is written in or not

Samuel L. Jackson has buried the hatchet with Marvel Entertainment, making a deal to play the role of Nick Fury in "Iron Man 2," and potentially many other films.

Jackson's deal is a long-term commitment to play Fury, the leader of the espionage unit the Shield. His deal contains an option to play the character in nine future Marvel superhero films, efforts that are expected to include "Captain America," "Thor," "The Avengers" and "The Shield" as well as potential sequels.

Jackson introduced Fury in the closing moments of "Iron Man," when the character asked Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark to join his group. Fury is a natural to show up in multiple Marvel franchises, as he crosses paths with many Marvel superheroes in the comic books.

Jackson's Marvel future looked murky, after he reportedly expressed his displeasure with the producer-financier's initial offer to reprise his role. Jackson was hardly alone: even though "Iron Man" grossed more than $600 million worldwide, Marvel brass has been very sparing in offers to talent like Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell to play villains in the sequel, sources said.

Jackson and his ICM reps have evidently cleared those dealmaking hurdles, and he will take part in the sequel that director Jon Favreau shoots in the spring, with Paramount Pictures distributing in summer 2010.

Interesting. I hope SLJ comes in the credits for at least Thor so his cameo serves more as an easter egg than have actual bearing on the plot.

To be honest, I'm just excited Marvel have signed up the Brannagh to direct. He's a legend to English Literature students.

He definitely respects the original source material...indicated by his faithful takes on the Bard's plays.

Agreed. As an English Literature graduate myself, I think this is why I'm excited about Branagh doing Thor. :woot:

It would be nice if Brannagh was more like Favreau before the Iron Man movie and communicate with us fans via Myspace or Twiiter, that was really fun when we could here some of the director's ideas and give him some fanboy questions to answer while the movie's being made.

It certainly would - Fav's is basically one of us though. I just cant see Branagh having the same enthusiasm in wanting to keep the fanbase in the loop.

Of course, you know that I sincerely hope that I'm wrong and that something awesome is revealed soon.

I'm psyched to hear that Branagh was seen meeting with Alexander Skarsgard. He has been my number one pick for Thor.

I've heard of this Alexander Skarsgard;

He seems like he might be ok in the role.

I knew that was going to happen. Thor is pushed back to 2011.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That freaking SUCKS!

F***ing crap. I buy tickets to San Diego Comic-Con, splash out on flights from Scotland to San Diego and a hotel - a couple of thousand right there, and set up this once in a lifetime trip, with a big draw being hopes of getting some first glimpse of Thor and Green Lantern. And now both films have been delayed to the point where there's zero chance of us getting anything at Comic-Con? Suckage. :csad:

2010 was setting up to be so great, as well. Thor pushed back a year!? It better be worth the wait.

Yeah, it was looking a likely prospect given where they are at the moment in terms of pre-production.

As much as it's a drag having to wait another year, if it gives us a better Thor film then I'm all for it.

Just read your post - given the circumstances you describe, this news does indeed suck.

However, I still think you'll have a great time at SDCC.

Marvel better hope Iron Man 2 doesn't suck. Otherwise, their Avengers Initiative is down the drain.

Having taken a few deep breaths, and gotten over my personal disappointment over this development, I can say that - objectively speaking - this could be very good for Thor. I'm sure there's few things worse for creativity on a film than scrambling to meet a deadline. With another year's worth of wiggle-room, Branagh and co can really take their time and put together the best film possible.

I just hope this doesn't mean we now have to wait a year before we even hear any casting news.

yeah i have a feeling if iron man 2 or thor sucks we won't get the avengers movie at all. i think this comes after the incredible hulk disappointing box office numbers too.

IF thor even happens now? yes you will have to wait awhile to hear any casting news now.

That´s not good at all.
On the positive side: IF Thor has a cameo in Iron Man 2 he has to be casted anyhow in the next few months so we MAY get casting news about THOR soon

Aww this sucks. Captain America only moved a couple months, though.

Well, arent you a little ray of sunshine, Smooth................ ;)

im starting to get that dc vibe here like they did with the justice league fiasco. :cmad:

Anyway, maybe they've pushed back the movie in order to let Skars have a long muscle building period in the gym.

;)

No, but seriously, I actually think that Marvel have done the right thing here. If they've realised that they werent gonna be ready and that a rushed project isnt gonna help anyone, it's an astute decision on someones part to recognise that and take the appropriate steps.

I'm not gonna entertain any 'doom & gloom' conspiracy theories here.

I think moving the Avengers was a good idea because it was slated to come out a couple months after Captain America and it would have been pretty weird to have two movies featuring him as a main character in theaters at the same time.

It does suck about getting Thor getting delayed. If it wasn't for that damn writer's strike we could have possibly been getting it this year.
